CNN is running a week long documentary on childhood bullying. Some of the stories they have reported are pretty sad with the end result of the bullied committing suicide. I am curious though if the parents of the bullies can be held financially liable for they kid(s) bullying others? I have read several of the cases where the parents of the dead child sued the school and won, but haven't heard of any suing the parents of the bully. Of course they go after the school because that is where the money is, but I would think the parents would also be liable for their child's actions in the matter.

technically the kid is under the school's responsibility when he's in it. which is where bullying takes place.

But what about cyber-bullying outside the school?

yes, i think the first thing to do is drop this stupid word "bullying" and call it what it reall is: HARASSMENT. And that is just the start, because sometimes these things rises above harassment.

Afterall, if the same things happened in the work place we dont call it "bullying" and this does not mean we should not give a little more leeway to children BUT it is what it is.

This would actually be defined as extortion.

The bullies are not liable to pay any damages like wrongful death to the victim. That's because all the victim need do is either not accept the messages from the bullies or just change Email addy so that the bullies do not know what it is. Now if the bullies THREATEN the life of someone, that's a criminal offense which can be handled by the police.

Yes, the parents should be held responsible as much as the school.

You cant really be held responsible if you are not present and normally other pepole are not held responsible for the actions of another. Even if it is their child.

Assuming they even know about it. How would they know their kid is a bully, if no one from the school tells them about it?

Most never do until their child is actually caught and the parents are told about what their child is doing or if the police get involved.

    That's not always true..

If my son is playing ball, and breaks a neighbors window, I as the parent am responsible to pay for it.

That is different. You are financially responsible for your own children but if the child should commit a crime and the parent was nat o party to the crime then i never heard of the parent being responsible. Other than to pay for damages. And that is only for restitution but they still never claim any direct responsibility.

    OK, consider this..

My kid gets caught for shoplifting, and there's a fine involved, who is on the hook to pay it?

Say he's 10-11 years old.. Clearly he has no job, and can't pay it.
