Gremmie, look at what i wrote. If the kid goes to prison the parent does not go with them. What you described is really the same as an insurance company making a payment.

Kids don't go to prison.. ( For bullying or harrassment, or petty crimes. ) And any financial penalties are the parents responsibility.

But paying the fine or replacing a candy bar is not an acknowledgment of their (the parents) culpability.

I could be the best parent around and have a child who is alwayds in trouble and the opposite can be true. Once that kid walks out the door their decisions are their own. Unless the parent tells the kid to go steal some candy or food.

Which brings up another important point: that we can blame the parents for everything but that is just not realistic.

I never said that the parent(s) can control what their child does while out of their sight. Only that as long as the child is a minor, the parent will be held responsible for the childs actions.

I don't necessarily agree with this, but that's the law.

Take for instance, a child that is constantly truant. The parent may not even be aware of this.. But, the parent can and will still face penalties as a result.

Personally I think kids who bully should be anally electrocuted in public. I don't care if they are 12. But that's just me. I'm a crazy fucker.

We would probably have to build more power plants in that case.

You are not taking into account that financial responsibility is not the same as criminal responsibility. There are cases of children committing murder and the parent is not effected. And really they had nothing to do with the crime anyway.

How does one go about penalizing the parent for harassment by their child especially if the parent doesn't even know that their child is doing anything?

    Not always so John..

A parent can do jail time, if their child is habitually truant.

Wouldn't you consider that as being held criminally responsible?

But then again, we weren't discussing criminal resonsibility. Just responsibility overall.

You can't penalize a parent for harrassment, I never said that.

That is unless it's physical, or property is taken or damaged.

Gremmie, if they can show the parent was aware of the truancy. You are bringing up an extenuating circumstances that never actually happens anyway. I never heard of a parent being held responsible for their kids crimes IF they were not aware of them. Negligence is another matter.

All this is a bad excuse though. This is typical of even adults in priison blaming their parents for things they did but then how many "perfect" parents have children who turn into criminals? Very many so it isnt really a good excuse. Bottom line is that we are responsible for our own actions.

It doesn't matter if the parents are aware or not.. And really no way to prove this anyway. And yes, it does happen, I've seen it.

And yes, parents are responsible for their childrens actions. Untill age 18

I've spent enough time in law enforcement to know this.

You're saying a 10 year old is responsible for their actions?

The parents shouldn't bear any responsibility?

    That's scary.

Gremmie, where have you ever seen (or are even aware of) a single instance of a parent being held criminally responsible for what their child did while NOT in theri presence?

    read back John.

But then again, you're the one bringing up being criminally responsible.

I'm just saying responsible overall.. We are debating apples and oranges here.

You have to remember Gremmie that a parent is no different than a guardian. The term guardian itself implies guardianship\to guard. This in and of itself denotes presence.

Actually if it is your child, then you are held responsible. By law, parents are liable for any damages caused by their children. If a child is vandalizing someone's car, then the owner of the car can sue the parents. If your child hurts someone else's child and they have medical bills, then you are again liable for the costs.
