What kind of liar are you?

Why that title? It's a proven fact that everyone lies. I believe most of us do it without any intent to cause harm to others. But for those of us that have been unfortunate enough to know someone that has no regard for your feelings or any concern at all about any misfortunes that may come your way because of their lies. We know pain that will last for many years and maybe a lifetime. Those kind of liars are usually thieves as well. I hate thieving liars with a passion that's very hard to describe.

I would like to hear what others on this forum feel about lying and liars and any experiences they might want to share.

The various types of lies include the following:

    Big Lie

A lie which attempts to trick the victim into believing something major which will likely be contradicted by some information the victim already possesses, or by their common sense. When the lie is of sufficient magnitude it may succeed due to the victim's reluctance to believe that an untruth on such a grand scale would indeed be fabricated. The term is originally attributed to Adolf Hitler.

    Careful speaking

Careful speaking is distinct from the above in that the speaker wishes to avoid imparting certain information or admitting certain facts and, additionally, does not want to 'lie' when doing so. Careful speaking involves using carefully-phrased statements to give a 'half-answer': one that does not actually 'answer' the question, but still provides an appropriate (and accurate) answer based on that question. As with 'misleading', below, 'careful speaking' is not outright lying.

    Compliments and false reassurances

"That looks very nice on you." White lies or exaggerations intended to please the other person. "Everything is going to be all right".

    Bluffing

To bluff is to pretend to have a capability or intention one does not actually possess. Bluffing is an act of deception that is rarely seen as immoral when it takes place in the context of a game where this kind of deception is consented to in advance by the players. For instance, a gambler who deceives other players into thinking he has different cards to those he really holds, or an athlete who hints he will move left and then dodges right is not considered to be lying (also known as a feint or juke). In these situations, deception is acceptable and is commonly expected as a tactic.

    Barefaced lie

A barefaced (or bald-faced) lie is one that is obviously a lie to those hearing it. The phrase comes from 17th-century British usage referring to those without facial hair as being seen as particularly forthright and outwardly honest, and therefore more likely to get away with telling a significant lie. A variation that has been in use almost as long is bold-faced lie, referring to a lie told with a straight and confident face (hence "bold-faced"), usually with the corresponding tone of voice and emphatic body language of one confidently speaking the truth. Bold-faced Lie can also refer to misleading or inaccurate newspaper headlines, but this usage appears to be a more recent appropriation of the term.

    Contextual lie

One can state part of the truth out of context, knowing that without complete information, it gives a false impression. Likewise, one can actually state accurate facts, yet deceive with them. To say "yeah, that's right, I ate all the white chocolate, by myself" utilizing a sarcastic, offended tone, may cause the listener to assume the speaker did not mean what he said, when in fact he did.

    Economical with the truth

Economical with the truth is popularly used as a euphemism for deceit, whether by volunteering false information (i.e., lying) or by deliberately holding back relevant facts. More literally, it describes a careful use of facts so as not to reveal too much information.

    Emergency lie

An emergency lie is a strategic lie told when the truth may not be told because, for example, harm to a third party would result. For example, a neighbor might lie to an enraged wife about the whereabouts of her unfaithful husband, because said wife might reasonably be expected to inflict physical injury should she encounter her husband in person. Alternatively, an emergency lie could denote a (temporary) lie told to a second person because of the presence of a third.

    Exaggeration

An exaggeration (or hyperbole) occurs when the most fundamental aspects of a statement are true, but only to a certain degree. It is also seen as "stretching the truth" or making something appear more powerful, meaningful, or real than it actually is.

    Fabrication

A fabrication is a lie told when someone submits a statement as truth, without knowing for certain whether or not it actually is true. Although the statement may be possible or plausible, it is not based on fact. Rather, it is something made up, or it is a misrepresentation of the truth. Examples of fabrication: A person giving directions to a tourist when the person doesn't actually know the directions. Often propaganda is classified as a fabrication.

    Jocose lie

Jocose (cf. jocular) lies are lies meant in jest, intended to be understood as such by all present parties. Teasing and sarcasm are examples. A more elaborate instance is seen in some storytelling traditions, where the humour comes from the storyteller's insistence that the story is the absolute truth, despite all evidence to the contrary (i.e., tall tale). There is debate about whether these are "real" lies, and different philosophers hold different views (see below).

    Lie-to-children

A lie-to-children is a lie, often a platitude, which may use euphemism(s), which is told to make an adult subject acceptable to children. Common examples include "The stork brought you" (in reference to childbirth) and the existence of Santa Claus, Tooth Fairy or the Easter Bunny.

    Lying by obsolete signage

Examples are the continued use of old stationery that has printed information such as a previous telephone number, or advertising that remains painted on a wall after an enterprise has ceased business.

    Lying by omission

One lies by omission when omitting an important fact, deliberately leaving another person with a misconception. Lying by omission includes failures to correct pre-existing misconceptions. An example is when the seller of a car declares it has been serviced regularly but does not tell that a fault was reported at the last service. Propaganda is an example of lying by omission.

    Lying in trade

The seller of a product or service may advertise untrue facts about the product or service in order to gain sales, especially by competitive advantage. Many countries have enacted Consumer protection laws intended to combat such fraud. An example is the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act that holds a seller liable for omission of any material fact that the buyer relies upon.

    Lying through your teeth

When one lies face-to-face with the intended recipient. This also may be an expression describing the act of lying with a smile or other patronizing tone or body language.

    Misleading/dissembling

A misleading statement is one where there is no outright lie, but still retains the purpose of getting someone to believe in an untruth. "Dissembling" likewise describes the presentation of facts in a way that is literally true, but intentionally misleading.

    Noble lie

A noble lie is one that would normally cause discord if uncovered, but offers some benefit to the liar and assists in an orderly society, therefore, potentially beneficial to others. It is often told to maintain law, order and safety.

    Perjury

Perjury is the act of lying or making verifiably false statements on a material matter under oath or affirmation in a court of law, or in any of various sworn statements in writing. Perjury is a crime, because the witness has sworn to tell the truth and, for the credibility of the court to remain intact, witness testimony must be relied on as truthful.

    Puffery

Puffery is an exaggerated claim typically found in advertising and publicity announcements, such as "the highest quality at the lowest price," or "always votes in the best interest of all the people." Such statements are unlikely to be true - but cannot be proven false and so do not violate trade laws, especially as the consumer is expected to be able to tell that it is not the absolute truth.

    White lie

White lies are minor lies which could be considered to be harmless, or even beneficial, in the long term. White lies are also considered to be used for greater good. A common version of a white lie is to tell only part of the truth, therefore not be suspected of lying, yet also conceal something else, in order to avoid awkward questions.

That's a very good policy and a worth while goal. Can you imagine a world where any lie could be detected 100% of the time by everybody?

I read a book a long time ago that had that plot. Can't remember the title or author now, but it was real hard on the current generation, but the kids that grew up with it, lived in a much better world.

Perhaps that was the basis for the Jim Carey's Movei Liar Liar.

    What I like...
Is that when I do lie...I feel guilty because it isn't an often occurrence.
What helps is that I have pledged to tell big lies.
If my boss ask me if I've being on the internet and I have...I'll admit it.
If my mom asked me was i driving recklessly when I wrecked the car ...If it I was...I'll say it. It's because of this practice that I learned from 14 that the worse that could happens is that you get punished or your lose something...

I decided if that's all then I could handle.
I had a mentally abusive father so I'm used to being beat down...if an issue of ego comes up like in some of these debates and I was wrong I don't have a problem admitting it.

My error is that when I tell anecdotes I will sometimes exaggerate the tale for fun and I've been practicing not doing that because I don't like to look back and remember a lie. So it maybe a small thing but it doesn't feel good at all.

Ah! But sometimes a little exaggeration makes the story worth listening to, where otherwise nobody might want to hear it. I believe it's not the lie itself that's the problem, but the reason behind the lie that makes it a problem or not. For instance someone you know wants you to tell them something personal and you prefer not. Most people will accept it when you say it's personal and I don't want to talk about it. But what about the person that won't let it alone and keeps on bugging you. Are you saying you won't tell them a lie to get them off your back? Are you really going to feel guilty about it? After all this person doesn't deserve the respect of hearing the truth. As human beings we need our privacy when we want it, and I have little sympathy for those who want to deny me the privacy that is my right.

Wow You nailed down lying pretty good. You look like an expert at lying( THat was a Joke , get it) It is hard not to lie . Even when you think your telling the truth you might not be for the problem is finding what is true. I have had this notion that if you tell the truth long enough then what you say will be the truth. You will be conditioned to tell the truth and by that when you say something it will become the truth.
Now as far as stretching the truth in story telling one thing I have noticed is it sounds bigger than life just by putting it in print and if a writer stretches out the event by stating something from different points of observation the event has a tendency to become bigger than life. Then there is the perception of the reader. The reader them selves might read bigger things than the text was saying . So part of this is the imagination of the individual reader coupled with the way the writer describes the event. So I don't think of story telling as a lie , but I think you implied the same thing in your definition of lies, so after all that were do I personally stand on lying. I do every thing I can not to lie, even if it is harmful to some one . I have been known to hold back information to protect the innocent and I do realize this act is in a way a form of deception. If some one asked Me straight up what I think is true then I can only give them the truth as I interpret what the truth is. I sure don't want to hurt no one , but sometimes the truth hurts

How about this form of lying. You say something on this forum and you get a response where the person has pulled bits and pieces of what you said out of context and then attacks you for something you did not really say, but makes it look as if you did say those things?

Next suppose by not telling the truth you save someones feelings but in doing so you enable them to continue living an unhealthy life style, which may or may not lead to an early death. Are you going to be okay with that?

Deception is a part of human life and knowing how to deceive might help protect you from being deceived. The problem with assuming everyone’s honest until proved otherwise, is you have no idea how easy that makes it for someone that makes a living by deceiving people to take advantage of you. As they say “Just like taking candy from a baby”.

The bits and pieces don't bother me . People as they inter act with you personally will learn your true character and if they don't and have preconceived ideas about who you are then it is there problem not yours. There own narrow mindedness, or there lack of desire to know you. I don't know , but there seems to be this assumption that other people are idiots. Like a default thought that humans for the most part don't think. This I believe is a false impression . So what I am getting at is people think more than you would think. In my business of building I use to look at other builders Like they did not know what they were doing and they would rely on other people to make them look good . As I matured I found out for the most part that they earned there own right to be a builder by things I had no idea they had done in there life to get there. I had a false impression by my own selfishness thinking they could no way have had the life experience that I did and there by deserving of my respect in the industry. I was wrong in my thinking and as I know I thought that way now I can see how others think that same way . Brake the bubbles of illusion my man .

I don't give to much thought about some ones feelings when it comes to tellen them the truth and one thing I have found is the sooner you tell some one the truth the better the out come is . It is part of my face your fear philosophy. What I mean by holding back some truth is my perception that a person might not be ready to face the truth. So it all might sound like a pack of lies and be true yet they will dismiss the truth as lies because of there inability to face a truth. Like the parent with a little devil child and they will defend the actions of there little devil to the bitter end . Up until there little devil kills a bunch of baby rabbits and smears the blood on all there peers and hangs them self with the guts . So the thing is to bring the person forward with baby steps . You can be more effective by small moves to the truth that there child needs some type of altered discipline from what they are getting at the moment, otherwise they might just dismiss you and continue on with the same old same old until the child does the deed

As far as deceiving to live . I don't necessarily believe that. I don't know if it is because of being street wise or what , but I find it pretty easy to see deception in people . Even the most hardened of deceivers . Criminals are a little harder to detect for they are very good at looking honest , or having the appearance of honesty on there face were as most people give signs of doubt by facial expressions . You know they are lying by the give away facial expressions. Except the good criminal you can't see this on there face , but no worries for Me because I come from the criminal element of society so in this I can recognize my own . I have been known to let people cheat Me though. It helps build there character when they have to look at the ground when they see Me . For they know that I know they cheated Me. Some will make good and some will just walk away. One thing I learned about karma and I don't mean supernatural karma . What I mean is if a person gets away with it they are prone to do it again and there boldness gets more sloppy and pretty soon they will become ostracized by society as a whole, or end up in prison if the acts are illegal. I believe we all know what the other person is doing if not by our own first hand account , but by the memories we hold for each other . Like if Sam knows what Joe is doing then Sam will tip of Mary and Mary will tip off Sally as to the Sam Slam he is planing against Sally. It is important to listen to the moaning and groaning of the people around you for it is not like they come straight out and tell you , but you might be surprised that they do tell you if you listen very hard . You can see things coming like it is in slow motion if you listen very hard and are aware of your surroundings . I call it reading the room . It can give the impression you can see the future when in fact you are just seeing an event unfolding .
Oh for all you deceivers out there that go to church < you go to hell for lying just the same as stealing

Hey, Mi-Ki-Gal, you have written very clearly and calmly, in a long post, even, with a complete semantic and grammatical structure, with punctuation and even a blank line for paragraphs and everything. Very understandable. This must be the real you.

As far as you are concerned, you probably are much better at gauging deception than someone without your background. But I would consider you to be in the minority. Consider how easy it is for criminals to pick out the marks to work their scams on.

But what about politicians that get on TV and then lie through their teeth to millions of people? If they are campaigning you may even expect lies or exaggerations, but they are proven methods that do work otherwise they wouldn't be used.

The science of deception detection is making good progress. The TV series “Lie To Me” is based real people that have exceptional skill in detecting deception. For anybody that hasn't seen that program, the first two seasons are out on DVD. There's a lot to be said for watching a whole series without any commercials. I highly recommend it.

I love you guys "all of you " for allowing Me to speak. I have been band by other sites for speaking taboos . I did understand why i was band for 3 days here on this site. Mi other writings are Me too, I do learn from you all as best as I can . Sci guy I have a little white lie that is in your mind to come clean on " I am always calm " That is my true nature . I inherited it from my Mother. She was a school teacher and when she retired it made the paper in Sacramento. The head Line was " Rock of the School retires" A sad day for she redefined what the meaning of calm is and she taught it to all her students

Building houses for people does give a person insight, You get to see the real of a person by living with them in there own environment. Lots of different personalities . They do start to repeat fairly quickly ( the personalities that is )

I have a rule of thumb with Politicians, " If there lips are moving they are lying" It is there nature. For the most part I believe they think the end justifies the means, I like to think they think that . In reality politics might just be good old boy rub my back would you and I will give you some money so you can rub my back and we can make a bunch of doe. The job of a politician is not Governance . The Job of the Politician is to get elected. Once you understand that you can see the roll the Politician plays.

I love that show . A man after my own Heart. I was excited about it before the first episode was run . Just the name of the show called out to Me . It was the Me part that really called my name .

All of you out there that know how I take a lot about the hidden Language . I got news for you . I didn't make that up. It is real and I hope just by knowing me better you to will be able to start reading this bizarre communication too. There are no secrets in this language. It blows my mind and is a lot to bare by my self having consciousness of the language. It is truly my hope everyone will be able to read the language and I will no longer be alone . Some of you are so close if it was a rattle snake it would bite you. I know that you are on the verge of seeing it by your own language you use . There is a few of you that are so spot on it is just a matter of time your coin will flip too see hear and feel the hidden form of communication . There is one girl who can see it in an extreme way , but here perception is it is god talking to her .

The producers capture the stalking instinct of humans pretty good on that show too. The way the main character stands in his funny gate and hangs his head with his eyes peering in an upward motion draws out the truth . It instills fear in people to stare at them in that fashion and then the people will tell every thing they know when confronted in this manner . It helps if you are big and strong. Woman are good at it when they play the part of the teacher with glasses peering over the top of there glasses. It sends a message of authority to the receiver and if they are in a power possession over you it has a tendency to make you do your best to preform out of fear of perhaps being fired from your job or getting a bad grade if you are still in school .
I was at a Willie Nelson concert and I tested this look on a bunch of bikers and the leader came right up to Me and said " Man can you stop looking at me like that with that crazy look in your eye, Don't you know there is 20 of us and only one of you . I said yeah but you guys owe Me a beer ( And they did , take that at face value so I don't have to explain why) So he gave Me a beer and I moved on , but the point is the demeanor I was putting out instilled fear in the leader . I was actually lucky to a degree that they just didn't knock the shit out of me. Except the biggest guy there knew he owed Me the beer and jumped up in my defense just before it was to turn to rumble time.
