Spam is advertising by people who want you to buy the product from them. Few people regard advertising copy as honest, so technically it violates the rule against trolling.

We're all free to talk about why we like our cars, musical instruments or other possessions, so long as we don't work for the company or have any commercial interest in its prosperity.

I don't start threads urging you to hire the company I work for to build your software. I have occasionally offered my services as a professional writer and editor, but I do small jobs for my friends for free so there's no profit involved.

I think the Dyson is a great piece of technology and I'm happy it was invented. Honest testimonials from customers--happy and unhappy--are one of the best resources available when shopping. Several criticisms of the Dyson were posted on this thread so it has become a rather balanced review of the product.

Sounds an awful lot like proper science and scholarship to me.

    ...and so was your post.

When we talk about cars, chances of a poster running out and buying one is pretty much nil. Now, had it come up as a comparison when someone asked for advice and you responded would have been different. But nobody asked about vacuum cleaners, and you still managed to write a glowing thread starter.

    Spamming at its best....

I have a thread about tablets, where I asked people who are using them to share their opinions and experiences. String glowed about his iPad, but that was welcomed, well, because I asked first. Spam is unwanted advertisement....

But Fraggle's not getting paid-this is more of a product review.

Just the person I need to talk to. I do most of my shopping at Costco and was wondering why when I find a product I really like. The next time I need to buy it, it's nowhere to be found. If I had known they were not going to carry that product anymore, I could have at least bought enough to last awhile. Anyway is there anything I can do about that or am I just screwed on that product?

That is a deliberate misquotation. This is what I said:
Taking someone's words out of context in order to make it appear that they said something different, something that fraudulently supports the quoter's own point, is intellectual dishonesty and is a bannable offense on SciForums.

I will assume you were joking (even though that's a stretch considering the tenor of the rest of your post), but consider yourself warned. In a place of science and scholarship, intellectual dishonesty is the worst form of trolling.
I appreciate your point of view but it seems to be yours alone. The others seem to feel that a discussion of an entirely new kind of vacuum cleaner technology--a technology that plays a role in almost everyone's life--belongs on a board titled "General Science & Technology."
I have no commercial interest in Dyson so it does not satisfy this website's definition of spam. Your premise has therefore been refuted. In accordance with the scientific method you are prohibited from repeating it anywhere on SciForums, or it will be classified as trolling.
Well forgive me for being ecstatic about a brand-new technology that has enriched my life. I don't give a fig about the Dyson company. In fact since it's a British firm it's downright unpatriotic of me to siphon business away from Hoover and Eureka--although their products are built in Malaysia like everybody else's so I suppose it doesn't really matter.
I suppose if I hadn't said where I bought it and how much I paid it would have looked less like an advertisement. But considering how exorbitantly expensive it is--even at a "discount store"--I felt that I should warn people.
I have the same experience at other stores, even "boutique" retailers like Trader Joe's. It's just the reality of modern marketing. Companies no longer form business relationships that endure until the president of one of them dies.

I find that many of the things at Costco come and go, and then come back later. I keep a stash of my favorite wild blueberries in my freezer because sometimes they're out for two or thee months. When they get Belgian chocolates at the holidays I buy a year's supply. They keep just about that long.

Getting paid isn't part of the definition of spam. Any unwanted advertisement through email or message board is spam.

And if you reread the whole thread, at least 3 posters agreed with me. Only one agreed with you.(and only because he is confused about the definition)

Anyhow, we provided some negative feedback on it to counteract your POV.

Yeah I know, but I was hoping maybe I could put in a request at Costco, just don't know if it's worth my trouble.

Also for the record I liked your write up about the Dyson. I haven't met anybody that owned one, so I considered it good info. I wouldn't mind seeing a sub-forum for product reviews by people that have bought and used the products, but I think it probably won't happen in this forum.

A product review is not spam, also consider that this thread has about 50 replies now. When was the last time you ever saw spam getting so much attention?

    1. You do realize that the spammer was a moderator?
    2. A product review can very well be a spam. Assuming the review is unwelcomed and very much glowing, mentioning only positive things.

But we should move this to Linguistics...I am done with the topic...

Well he bought the product used it and went to a lot of trouble to share his experience with it and I didn't have any sense that he was trying to push the product off on the rest of us. Also like I said, it would be nice if we had a sub-forum just for product review, so misunderstandings like this don't happen in the future.

You've made your complaint and some agree and some don't. Maybe we should have a ruling from the administrator?

We have put in many requests in the fifteen years that we've been shopping there (going back to when it was the Price Club) and none of them have ever been fulfilled.
Two other Moderators have even been here, and rather than deleting it, they posted their own replies.
Far be it from me to be pushy. Just ask anybody.

Nobody's going to lock or delete this thread now that it has become a bona fide discussion.

Look you guys, if anybody ever feels like waxing rhapsodic about a favorite new toy again, just leave off the price and the name of the store so it can't be regarded as an ad. Fair enough?

Or do you want me to shut down all the threads in Arts & Culture in which the members tell each other about the CD's they've bought and the movies they've rented?

Relax, we're just kidding. It was just funny that you jumped on and accused cosmic of being a spammer after you went on about the new improved-amazing-wonder thats is the Dyson. The all new contender for the 'Most Fabulous Object in The World'. Better than that pesky fridge.

My Mum's been 'Dysoning' for years now; ever since they really took off in the UK (around a decade give or take I think). Of course I bought one as soon as I had the chance, around 3 years ago; It's the nuts.

I just saw a commercial that said the Dyson auto adjust to the floor type it's being used on. So you shouldn't have needed to adjust it yourself. I kind of like not having to adjust it myself, but that's just me.

Talking of Spam, I wonder how many of you realise just what a versatile and delicious food spam is.
From its pretty pink complexion, down to it's meaty spicy taste it's an all round welcome addition to any meal.
Plus, it is very nutritious, being full of Vitamin S, Sodium Chloride, without which you would die immediately, and the wonder ingredient the magazines are raving about, cholesterol.
Up to 70% fat free, it will keep you trim too.
You can eat it straight from the tin, a la trampoise, but if you want a sophisticated dinner for two, light some candles, and eat it fried in a sandwich.

How much is it and where can I buy some?

PS doesn't frying it with candles take a long time?
