Hypothetical: you have a computer at your disposal that is maximized to use all the energy of a star. What'd you do with it's processing power?

At that size, It may come close to predicting chaotic events to who knows how far into the future.

I'd make something kind of like the matrix, but the only program it would run is pron.

Pron? Is that the pornographic version if Tron? Which is really cool sounding--don't get me wrong. . . Just. . . I don't think Olivia Wilde would appreciate the thought. Will there be large shrimp there?

    Damn.... I'm getting hungry.

Pr0n is a meme that's been around almost as long as the internet. How does a gay guy not know this?

Use it to find a way to open a wormhole to travel from one place to another in the universe. Could also be using it to find answers to ways of new medical research to give more information about things we know nothing about like dark matter and its affect upon the universe.

First off, a Dyson Sphere is millions of years away from today, maybe even impossible. And building one would take at least 100,000 years and all the matter in the entire solar system as raw materials- belts included. Dyson spheres are not practical for that reason. I know there are variants of the Dyson sphere but I am talking a solid body black sphere whose interior surface area is habitable land- it's daytime 24 hours a day and the sun never rises or sets- it just sits there in the middle... the classic Dyson sphere.

But assuming we could do it and put it all under the control of one super-computer, what would we command it to do? I'd say a trillion different things at once: run the Dyson sphere. Such a civilization would undoubtedly rely extensively on robots and machines to live a normal life. Imagine the Internet a trillion times as big and you begin to grasp the scale.

Sixty years ago no one could have predicted what we're doing with computers today. Tom Watson himself said that there would only be a market for a few dozen of them. Everyone assumed that they would only be useful to scientists. After all, who would want to have a machine the size of a semitrailer in his house, which would require installing air conditioning, and then learn how to program it at the bits-and-bytes level before he could make it do anything?

So I doubt very much that we can predict what the inhabitants of a Dyson sphere will do with their computer.

I sure hope it's a Mac and not a Windows box, or 90% of the human race will have to be employed as troubleshooters.
I have a Dyson vacuum cleaner. Will that help?

I'm not sure that powerful computers require all that much energy. Shouldn't we be thinking in terms of calculations per second?

Windows>Mac. And that's not the point. I didn't ask whether we could know what those people would use it for.

Hmm...A Dyson computer. I'd probably program it to vacuum the living room first, then the bedrooms.
