I ran today...and we've really hit summer weather down here.

As in 96 degrees Fahrenheit, or 35 degrees Celsius, and one of my meds means I don't sweat normally...I'm actually thinking about splitting my workout and working out some at 1 am when I get home.

So I thought it just a good idea to remind everyone...hey, it does seem to be getting hotter everywhere.
You may not be used to it.

You need hydration. Don't leave home without it.

Also, you ought to watch your potassium intake-honeydew melon and bananas are both excellent places to get potassium...although I actually use morton's no-salt...which is potassium chloride. Just make sure you don't get much more of it than the RDA if you use the no-salt. Too much can also throw your heart rhythm out of whack.

Calcium supplemetation also seems to help prevent muscle cramps when working out in the heat.

Of course, run all this by your doc if you have anything funky going on.

    ....

What do you use for calcium intake? Dairy products? Any alternatives?

    Tablets. Soy. Beans. Leafy greens.

I'm a vegan...and when last I ate dairy,it was accidentally in some yummy mystery glop at an Indian buffet

...I found out I had made myself become lactose-intolerant...about 30 minutes later...

    Yeah, heat, ain't it grand?
I also happen to live in the southern part of the Great Southern Land (like James) and yes Winter is upon us.
For perspective, Winter here does not mean strapping on the iceskates or heating the poor car up so it starts in the morning. the worst temperature poor James will experience in the next 3 months will be about minus 1C ( if he gets up really early), me, I might face minus 3c but it's not so bad, I'll also have Winter daytime temps of 20-23C with abundant sunshine, It sure ain't Chicago.

But heat, I'm totally mad for it, heaven for me is 40C or 33c with 95%humidity.

    Cold sucks!

Would think you'd mildew in that, Spud. Get root rot at the very least. You po'tater.

You can have the heat, I moved to Texas from the arctic reaches of Ohio.
I miss snow, I miss cold, and I miss all the roaches and fleas dying.
    That does not happen here.
Although I do like this biome quite a lot, even the poisonous snakes are cool.

I'm chuckling here because anything above 18C starts me to sweating, and we hiked up to 27 C for a couple of days recently. Toasty for these parts. I can't imagine enduring 35-40C for any length of time.

Only one summer was it 35C in these parts for a week, and we turned off all of the computers to prevent over-heating, sat around 'au naturel' and watched videos, doing little else except keeping the horses and cats creature comforts likewise tended to, meaning the needed more shade and water and less feed.

At times like that, I am so pleased to work at night, in an environmentally controlled building. The poor cashiers, dealing with the over-heated grumpy patrons.....My respect to all of the under-appreciated people whose efforts hold it all together.

Actually potassium isn't a huge problem, not injested anyway. The body EXPECTS to get to much potassium and the body selectively rids itself of it. Its sodium that the body expects to be in short surplie and therefore retains. Your right about the dangers but that's a massive IV injection, not a slow injested buildup

96, eh? It was something like that here in Atlanta. Being the strange guy that I am, I did some sprinting yesterday at a track nearby. Because it was so hot, I was the only person there.

I was really sweating some bullets when I was done

That would because November is almost summer, currently its winter and bloody cold. At a guess I would say it was 14C today

    GAAAH!

    That explains my freaking ankles!

I seem to retain too much sodium too easily.
I have had borderline high blood pressure in the past, but only in winter.

The potassium supplementation seems to keep my calves from cramping and/or me hitting the point where I stop sweating and start to cook.

The only time I ever had to increase salt intake...I was driving an hour in stop and go traffic, in an uncooled car, then taking 2 1/2 hours of kung fu while wearing sweatpants.

Try using low sodium salt in your cooking and home make food from scratch. That will limit your sodium intake and boost your potassium (that's what they put in the salt insted of sodium)

Physical exertion and hot weather can quickly lead to a state of dehydration and a loss of trace minerals. As I participate in endurance type activities, in both hot and cold weather, I have experienced some very serious muscle cramping in my arches, calves and even thigh muscles until I discovered that taking a couple of Tums or Rolaids and hydrating with plain old water relieved such symptoms almost immediately and prevented their recurrence.

The best solution is to avoid becoming dehydrated in the first place through adequate nutrition and hydration, yet one can find oneself in circumstances where it is not possible to meet these requirements.

I am not an advocate of sports drinks nor of liberal ingestion of the aforementioned products save to point out that they are effective for me. Though sold as an over the counter digestive aid, I keep a few around for the sports related use only, as I am blessed with a capable digestion system and have only experienced heartburn a few times in life, usually when attending a social pot-luck dinner, where one samples most everything just to be supportive and polite, lol...... The cost of being 'socially correct' in a small community.

As with any product, persons contemplating the use of same should be knowledgeable about their own physiology and any underlying conditions/medications that might interact if they take Tums or Rolaids for the condition cited above.

Gee, I just bang out my daily 10 miles no matter how hot or cold it is, and sweat like the proverbial piggie too.

Cook all of our food from scratch as the wife has a salt sensitivity and cannot tolerate more than her RDA. Since I love to cook, it works out nicely. Very healthy and balanced too, low in salt and refined carbohydrates as I am watching my blood sugar.

Here in the greater Detroit area wonderland it runs from about 100 F to - 20 F summer to winter. Hotter now than it used to be, due to global warming. More tornadoes too. Sorta reminds me of Oklahoma, only not so flat and smaller First Nations.

Yikes... my average body temperature hovers around 100.1*F and anything much over 75*F really kills me... and lately it's been in the upper 90's here in PA...

Needless to say, I've been doing a whole lotta nothing outside while this heatwave blows over... heh.

14C? That's almost 60F. That's barely cool, hardly cold. In northwestern California our summer nights are often colder than that. Did you get that number right?

Maybe you meant -14C/5F. Now that's cold. It almost never gets that cold even here in Washington. But I didn't know it ever got that cold in Australia except maybe up in the mountains.
