But seriously mods, is this really a reason/justification?:

    Hercules Lucifer:

"Thread necromancy. It's eight years old! "

So Hercules closed down the Grizzly speed thread, because it was old? I was contributing to that thread, and I didn't even realized it was that old, but so what?

As long as there is VALID and ONTOPIC discussion, not to mention INTEREST in the subject, there is no reason to close a thread. Better get use to the nature of internet, after a while everything repeats itself.
Not to mention the owner of this site needs hits, that is what creates money. So if you shutdown threads for the wrong reasons, indirectly you are taking money out of the pocket of the owner....

    Just so you know....

By the way I would like to know why old threads aren't locked automatically and what age is where we still can revive an old thread?? Is 3 years not so old?? How about 5? Apparently 8 is just too much....

I have observed that frequently (though not always) it is new posters who revive one of the old threads.

When these suddenly get shut down, there is little incentive for them to linger and learn.

Those who are new to forums may need a while to find their area of interest if no one happens to be posting to such at the time of their arrival.

Additionally, if they post to an old thread and no one responds, then it might qualify as a 'dead' thread. It saves duplication of topic, at the least.

Then again, I'm not to be taken seriously........I like to post smilies and visuals, also frowned on, according to forum etiquette.

That is a good point, that's how you lose would be members.

What happens is that someone googles a topic, let's say "how fast can a grizzly run?" Then Google finds a few years old sciforum thread, and the searcher interested in the topic actually signs up and continues the thread because he/she is interested in a discussion about it.

Now if we shutdown the thread, that is not exactly the nicest welcome for a new member. Not to mention any mods definition of what is old is completely arbitrary....

If you don't want old threads re-opened, you should just lock or delete them.

Some boards are set up so that threads autolock after a certain period of time, if they want to lock threads for age, then why not have it done automagically?

    Sometimes the threadsurrection is good....

Sometimes though, you wish people knew to look at the date-they'll give advice to people who no longer hang out...

Instead of wasting everyone’s time with whiney-ass complaint threads, maybe you could .... well I don’t know .... talk to me?

I have always been willing to re-consider any moderation action if someone makes a genuine sensible request for me to do so. I have reversed/altered moderation in the past in light of requests. I’m not Stalin.

But, disappointingly, I can count the number of times this has happened on one hand because often the first response of various members is to run to the SFOG thread and complain and moan and whine and act indignant without ever contacting me. Frankly, in light of this behaviour, I don't feel inclined to work with you at all, whereas I might have if you had shot me a quick PM first to resolve your issue.

    Just 2 quick questions:

    1. What is your (completely arbitrary, pulled out of your ass) definition of an old thread?
    2. If old threads should be locked, why isn't this done automatically???

Also, your inability to deal with valid criticism was duly noted. There was simply not one logical reason to close an ongoing thread. I hope you learnt a valuable lesson....

Thats nowhere near as entertaining. Besides its one thing to talk, another for someone to listen.

I'm not even sure what the big deal with necromancy is anyway. If someone picks up a conversation a long time after the original poster started it, whats wrong with that. In a pub a discussion can go on all night well after the drunk who started it is long gone. If new info/insight adds to the thread, whats wrong with that? Especially considering most newbies find sciforums via Googling something.
