Then how do you account for "computers" like Data?

You may be confusing actual maneuvering with tactical maneuvering - remember, the shields in Star Trek are based on facings - if, say, your ventral shielding is nearly collapsed, you would rotate the ship to present your dorsal side to the enemy, presenting a stronger shield face. This is another reason why maneuvering in Trek is so important.

In a way they are - at times, sweeping strikes are more effective as well. Example being "Yesterdays Enterprise" where the Ent-D takes out a B'rel class Bird of Prey with a sustained series of phaser strikes, the last of which tracks across the ships entire shield grid (and once the shield fails the ship underneath). At the same time, if you watch many of the encounters with the Borg, they will fire short, rapid, high-output, and randomly rotating phaser bursts in order to prevent the Borg from adapting.

I guess... though I hesitate to say their PD weapons were "successful"... considering their shots fired to shots hit ratio

Unless your weapon covers the distance to the target near instantly - then the biggest problem is simply tracking the targets current vector, not it's overall course, as you only need to hit where it will be a microsecond later, as opposed to a few moments later.

I don't recall that one - I only entered the SFC series with SFC2: Orion Pirates and SFC3... sadly I never got to play SFB or SFC 1 and 2.

Data and Lore are hardly computers they are artificial minds. Remeber their brains even require nutrients. Still as artificial constructs they have limited self programming abilities. Data cannot us contractions despite that his mind is knowledgeable enough and he knws that they would speed up his talking.

And you thing SW vessels don't do the same?

Still avoiding getting hit at all is superior to just getting hit on a strong shield.

True, but hitting a borg cube is like htting a barn when you fire from the inside.

The sweeping fire is really most often used as a firehose effect, letting you hit the enemy even if you have to move the beam to do it.

No better or worse than modern Direct Fire Point Defense weaponry versus modern Aircraft. missiles of course do better provided you get a lock.

Problem is that at long distances where the target si is not where it appears to be and if the ship is moving even a tenth as fast as your beam...it messes up things terribly.

Remember phasers travel at just below C

I'm talking the old board game. the ones where all the ships were based off designs in TOS.

Kaufman Retrograde: tactical system named for Fleet Captain Kuafman.whjere the ship moves in reverse when confronting an enemy. Tactically this makes the enemy expend more energy on movement than a traditional approach. it also alow you to lure the enemy acrposs mines and transporter bombs you lay. The tactic also weakens the effectiveness of enemy plasma torpedoes and drones, while strenghtening the effectiveness of your own.

I noticed recently (after the release of the newest ST film a few years back), the votes for Star Trek on this thread have been rising.

understandable, as the new st movie is better that the whole of other star trek put together. young Kirk and Spock are badass.

that's arguable and depends on your likes in movies really. its better than the Phantom Menace and somehow like the AOTC and maybe ROTS, but nothing comes close to the original trilogy no matter what.

    NEW DEBATE!

Jedi (The Men Who Stare At Goats) vs Jedi (Star Wars)

    Obi-Wan/Bob survives regardless though...

Eh. Like it has been said before, it all depends on your tastes. But an imitation can never trump its predecessor.

Pretty much... though with the new Star Trek: Vanguard series coming out I wish to high heaven the better designed and written books would be made into cannon... their continuation of the timeline (not to mention strict adherence to continuity) is amazing!

just bringing something new to the table:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHTtOMWRysg&feature=related

This scene... the Defiant fire's two quantum torpedoes into a large planet - the shockwaves encompass what looks to be roughly 1/5th the visible side of the planet... now, I believe it to be a gas giant, but none the less... huge explosion is huge...
