How well could Earth defend against an alien invasion at our present state, assuming these aliens could move a large invasion force to Earth. Also what would this alien force most likely be like genetically, technologically, culturally, diplomatically, etc. and how would the different aspects affect the invasion process.

    Meaningless question.
What are their capabilities? Logistics? Vulnerabilities?

The collection of scifi storires written about alien invasion will give you the range of answers of alien motives, abilities, as well as our ability to stop them. It's pretty broad.

We don't have to defend the Earth.
They'll just catch a cold and die.
Or maybe, rather than a cold, a particularly virulent form of man flu.

On the other hand, they could infect us and we die...

If the aliens simply want to kill us off, I'd say our chances are close to zero. It seems very unlikely that we'll be anywhere close to launching interstellar stuff in 50 years, so the mere fact that the aliens are able to move a large invasion force here would mean that they are massively more advanced than we will be. You can't really defend a planet very well if your enemy simply wants to get smashy...

I doubt we could win, only way to win is to split them up, and force a war of attrition.

If we survive the initial alpha strike and are able to inflict casualties and force the war to take longer then a week then we gain the advantage logistically.

I agree, but I suspect it would be a lot like a group of cavemen having a logistical advantage over the enemy soldiers who where machine-gunning them.

The way I figure it is that those enemy soldiers will eventually run out of ammunition, out of food, out of water. Then they aren't any better then the cavemen.

Same story here, if we can survive the alpha strike then there might be hope.

I'm pretty sure we'll lose the war of attrition, because the aliens will probably have more planets at their disposal then us.

That is true, there could always be a second attack even if the first fails.

But hey, at the very least we can die with the consolation that we have an answer to the Fermi paradox.

If they just want to kill us and don't care about wrecking our planet in the process, then there's probably really nothing we could do. They could just keep slamming stuff into the planet until we were done. I suppose it might be different if they decided to actually come down and fight us because they didn't want to ruin the biosphere. Although even then, they might just send down engineered diseases/nanorobots/automated drones/whatever, rather than actually coming down and fighting us themselves.

They could just alter the trajectory of one of the asteroids so it smashes into the Earth killing all life- they wouldn't even need to visit here to wipe us out.

Or slam a cruise missile into the planet at a good fraction of the speed of light.

Then what's the point? Other then being intergalactic douchebags.

Maybe they want to strip-mine the Earth for...uh...whatever it is aliens strip-mine for, and just want to get us out of the way before they start.

It would be likely that though they are not resistant to our diseases the fact that the disease have never encountered them would make the diseases useless against them. lets assume that they are here for colonization and enslavement and wish to avoid destroying the planet. Let us also assume that they brought their own means of manufacturing supplies and can live and raise crops on our planet. Also that they have not weaponized lasers or plasma or some type of force field. Lets assume they have metal bullets and metal armor and being as we are close to advanced robotic creations they may have some robotic suits of armor or even robots with at least semi-advanced AI. Try and create your own idea of what type of planet they may come from and what their genetic advantages would be. Let us also assume they come from a close enough star that they could reach us within 50 years with speeds not much faster than the speed of light.

due to war in the middle-east I would think we could easily mobilise our forces there but how fast could we mobilise forces in North America and Europe. Would China become the most powerful with its immense industrial capacity and workforce. would we allow current wars to stand in our way or would we unite to fight these invaders.

Perhaps we should also assume they are humaniod and have at least a slightly similiar social structure to ours. But I am not sure we can assume other species advance as fast as us. looking at the last 200 years we advanced from wagons to cars to planes to sending people to the moon.
