But they can build starships? :bugeye:

That's kind of like saying "Suppose they can build super-sonic fighter jets, but they don't know how to make guns, so they use bows and arrows for weapons...

We would not be able to defend ourselves against another alien species capable of deploying an invastion force to our solar system.

I can see maybe laser and plasma but force fields we cant really even consider making how can we say they can be produced, and they don't really have to be the most advanced starships in the first place. I guess if we really wanted to we could weaponize lasers right now. I want to give the humans ion this situation at least a fair chance I mean who is to say that the first interplanetary space fairing species out there is going to be armed and advanced to the point where they are like gods to us. We can't assume that every single species out there is going to focus on advancing its armaments. Maybe they are good with space travel and not so good with weapons, maybe they haven't much war recently and haven't had reason to advance, perhaps this is their first chance to atempt to conquer an advanced civilization. Everyone seems to assume weapons will evolve into lasers and force fields with well armed battlecruisers but what if the worst a starship can do is just launch a couple of rockets at other ships.

why not maybe if they just sat in space and launched missiles at us but what if they come to conquer and bring us into their civilizations they would have to land troops, there would be fighting, some negotiations. we can launch nuclear weapons at them, we have enough to destroy our planet why not enough to shoot down a few starships. This is why we should have missile turrets in space.

So there are thousands and thousands of aliens, at the end of a 50 year long resupply chain, against millions and millions of us with our entire industrial base right here, both with fairly comparable technology.

Who do you think will win?

more likely millions, with certainly superior technology in some aspects and all of them well trained soldiers, hundreds of large ships and a very well supplied initial attack force. not sure of their genetic abilities, if you don't like the example I've given please suggest what you find to be a more realistic possibility of an alien invasion. amored vehicle, drones, low orbit assault and resupply platforms, possibilities are endless, I can not possibly consider all the variables, please try to make some yourself and hopefully all later posts to this thread will be based on previous probable and logical assumptions made by others. try developing this thread on that assumption.

alright this should probably also be about what an alien force intending to invade earth would most likely be like so make something up.

Unless they're moving around in world size ships, I can't see millions of aliens traveling on a 50 year voyage.

Space bombardment, the destruction of civilization, turning the earth into an uninhabitable wasteland, sure.

Invasion, domination and control,... I don't see it happening.

Seriously, people - this should be a foregone conclusion.

If they are technologically advanced enough to travel many light years just to get here, that also means they are WAY ahead of us in EVERY technical field. Fighting them would be like throwing leaves at modern battle tanks.

And since we, at least a hundred years behind them today and have been able to create biological weapons already, why would you suppose they would not?? There are also dozens and dozens of other types of attacks they could launch against us.

But if it's your intention here to not be serious, then dream up any kind of wild fiction you want - like transporting us via a Star Trek device to an alternate universe. Sheesh!!

And if that's the aim, then please move this to a proper category!

What Read-Only said. The practicalities of making a true star ship are well beyond us. If they have mastered that technology, AND managed to pick out our dirtball as being worth invading from all the vastness of space, they have some amazing technology.

So they'd orbit, watch, capture a few samples, experiment, and then design a plan that suited their needs. Do they want rid of humans altogether? A simple engineered virus could wipe us out within months. Do they want a workforce? Then we could be drugged and co-erced easily enough if they seeded the clouds and tampered with our water supply.

But given that there are probably millions of planets within reach of them, with everything they need on them, minerals etc, without life, why pick one that needs controlling? They could just rock up to an uninhabited planet, and strip mine the crap out of it.

Did you even read the whole thing.Let us work under the assumption that they are here to forcefully bring us into their society and colonize the planet. they are not here to wipe us out or enslave us. you guys are giving pretty much the same responses, either you say they would completely decimate us or you're saying there is no way they could significantly hurt us at all. Lets try and preetend such a ludicrous scenario in which MAYBE a large invasion force in relatively slow ships capable of moving maybe half the speed of light and are within 30 light years so they could reach us in 60 years and maybe have some sort of freezing process for their troops, would try to invade us and we survive the first few days or weeks of the assault and we don't get exterminated in 3 minutes, lets pretend this could ever happen. You are all making an assumption that any force capable of moving a few light years would also be super advanced in all other categories. The best example of this in the culture I know is Halo. not the aliens but how the human race evolved, what do you see in there that looks so much more advanced than what we have today. It is mostly simple improvements no radical new technologies, and if we were to fight the halo humans today we would sort of be close to matching them. Not every space fairng species out there is going to be a bunch of demigods. So please try to think of what these invaders are like yourself, I can not think of every possibility. The invaders are certainly not here for the minerals as those could probably be found in any easily reached location.

I don't think it would be a violent confrontation. I suspect they would globally realease a biological agent engineered for humans that would simply incpacitate or kill us (depending on their intent).

couldn't a biological agent be risky, not exactly knowing the effect it would have on huimans, or the other plants and animals, and there could be a risk it mutates into something capable of harming the aliens, or it could completely destroy the bioshpere. perhaps I should make another thread first discussing what form an alien invasion would take, and what their capabilities are.

I don't think a species that advanced wouldn't do their homework first.

That's the funny thing about invading aliens.
    They never do their homework.
Germs, water (oh shit how did we miss that?), duplicitous human collaborators, innovative human scientists...
    It always ends in tears.

maybe a better question is if we had the ability to travel to another star system with an advanced civilizaytion ont it how would we go about conquering it

It's completely impossible to speculate about tactical decisions when we have ZERO knowledge of the enemy...especially when the enemy could be constructed completely differently than us, or possess technology that is lightyears ahead of our technology.

I totally agree. This is way too broad of a topic for relevant answers.

However - just out of curiosity, in general terms of destructive power, what's the nastiest stuff we've got for weaponry? What I mean is - assuming humanity wanted to throw the equivalent of a "haymaker" in terms of just brute destruction of something regardless of what format an enemy came in, what do we have?
