    Serial Killer
A serial killer is a typical white male, 20-30, and most of them are usually in the USA. Their main motives are sex (even though the act of sex may or may not take place), power, manipulation, domination and control. The sex motive is usually rape for an organized killer and sadism for a disorganized killer. They act in a series of 5 or more murders with a cooling off period between each murder. Serial killers can go on for months and years before they are usually caught. The victim is usually the same for every killer - prostitute, hitch-hiker etc. Their victims may also have the same or similar attributes in gender, age, race, general look, residence etc. Serial killers also stick by their modus operandi very closely and may change it with experience. Most murders occur by strangulation, suffocation, stabbing etc. Serial killers act by a sex-murder fantasy based with their control, they usually live in this dream world in their teens until they act it out for real when they get into the adult stage. As each murder occurs a serial killer may be disappointed by his murder fantasy and may act it out again to achieve it to their own satisfaction.

    Mass Killer
A mass killer is a a very angry and frustrated white male, 25-40, who may be suffering from some sort of mental problem. They are wholly disorganized and show a similar lifestyle to that of a disorganized serial killer. Their lifestyle usually includes such things as - they have a large array of weapons at home, are heavily into violence (on TV or videogames etc), live by themselves or with a parent, have no partner and may have been rejected by the opposite sex too much, would have tried to get into the army, plus many other common factors. They usually attack restaurants, schools, or other public places (they may at some time have been affiliated with this place because they could of been stressed, fired there, or rejected by the opposite sex there) wearing army camouflage gear and armed to the teeth. They have a blitz style attack involving machine guns or sometimes explosives. Although mass killers usually have guns there have been a few cases like Richard Speck - where all victims (considered to be over 3 for a mass kill) may be killed by stabbing or strangulation. The blitz attack has them with an automatic weapon with many spare rounds firing at any person in their path. The victims may or may not be related (some mass killers kill their entire families), but usually they just kill anyone. In many cases the killer has killed more females than males, this goes with the rejection factor. As they become suddenly stressed and act out this large murder in a short time of usually minutes to hours, they may commit suicide or get shot by police. No mass killer ever intends or knows he is going to escape the carnage.

    Spree Killer
A spree killer is like a serial killer at warp speed (without the sex motive) or a mass killer at a snails pace. There haven't been too many spree killers and people haven't usually heard of them. A spree killer is usually a white male 20-30 who acts like a mass killer, killing a lot of people by shooting, and this murdering usually happens over a period of time from a week/s to a month, with the killer fleeing the police and public fear at the same time. Spree killers usually flee with someone else and are like the typical mass killer but who intends to go uncaptured. Some cases of spree killers are Charles Starkweather or Andrew Cunanan. They are alike to mass killers in ways of victims and methods but lifestyles may have the spree killer with a criminal record and a partner.

You frequently post some very informative and intriguing threads, KJ.

I'm sorry, but I don't think that this is one of them, nor do I think that posting such a topic as a poll is appropriate for a scientific forum.

The topic itself could be very debatable, but this format doesn't work for me.

WAY to specific and therefore wrong. For instance when looking at female serial killers i know of only 1 who was arosed by killing. Furthermore your definitions ignore the angel of death type, the malicious hero type and god knows how many more (those 2 come to mind because one tends to be a HCP and the other an emergency service worker). Also where does a Hitman feature in that? Killers motivate by greed (like one i herd of who was an aged care worker who killed her clients for there aged pention checks)

Perhaps, but the poll is not public, and violent death is a popular theme on TV programs and in the news. I'm betting a lot of people have fantasized about going crazy. I'm just wondering what kind of crazy fantasy it might be.

If no one responds to it I'll have an answer, if people do respond I'll have another answer. Why are so many movies and TV series based on murder and death? What do the watchers get out of watching this violence? To find out I have to start somewhere, and this was my choice.

Yes I agree that the definition of serial killers needs to be expanded. I got those definitions on the following link.

    http://www.francesfarmersrevenge.com/stuff/serialkillers/types.htm

In the following link, List of serial killers by country, the U.S. has so many listed they made a separate link for it.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_serial_killers_by_country

So why does the U.S. have 3 times as many as 2nd place U.K.?

That you ponder such things, I find mildly disturbing.

I don't watch many movies, do not enjoy graphic and gratuitous violence and get most of my news on-line, whereby I avoid much of what you you mention above.

I am no Pollyanna, and I am quite aware of the dark side of human nature.

Nor do I care for your new avatar, lol....

I prefer not to explore it. Such is my choice.

Others may provide you with the answers you apparently seek.

A killer of ignorance, stupidity and confusion.

A killer of bad viruses that harm many humans and other animals.

A killer of dogma, lies and greed.

I am sure there are studies on this.

I suppose part of the appeal of watching violence on tv is to vicariously experience it and use the experience to deal with one's own problems, on a subconscious level.

E.g. a woman disappointed by her husband watches a film where a wife kills her husband, and the woman uses this to distance herself from her own husband, or to set better boundaries, or to leave him.

I don't think it is the killing itself that is relevant - but the notion of a definitive action as such, something that one's life might lack.

Without killing how would the Romans have entertained themselves? Could we ever have a war without killing? People used to make a picnic out of public hangings. Even the fairy tales and rhymes we tell our children depict violence.

do you mean on percent or just number . If number then the UK mind is more criminal because the US population is probable 5 time langer then the UK

It is interesting most murders are in the western society particular among the Anglo Saxons and among the so called higher literate world .

We humans are predators and as such all of us have the capacity to kill. Some of us have practiced and studied techniques to do this so we would be better at it than a novice. For some it is reflexive on proper stimulus.

Personally, I would kill someone who tried to kill or harm me, a member of my family or someone who was threatening others with death. As an advanced martial artist and weapons expert who pretty much always goes armed, I am quite capable of killing someone if I must. I would rather not, however, and would not, if that could be avoided.

I don't really think this is something to be taken lightly either.

Remember what I said about having a very suburban perspective?

In my case I suppose the closest match would be serial killer: simply because of the similarities in the proposed(?) victims: those who knowingly promote misinformation. Who knowingly and willingly work at "reducing the average IQ".
But very little in the profile fits, including the "may be disappointed by his murder fantasy and may act it out again to achieve it to their own satisfaction". Any continuation would be a function of "justification" rather than disappointment (i.e. how could I be disappointed? THAT dipstick isn't doing it any more).

Of course, the problem arises in deciding exactly what criteria are used.
    Snake-oil salesmen? Sure.
Politicians? A goodly number, I have no doubt.
Those who tell you Titanic was a great movie? Absolutely.
But after that things get a little nebulous and it'd be hard to not slide into "She really should know better than to wear THAT skirt with her thighs" BLAM!

She's in with the rest of the targets.

Guys got a sense of humour, some talent and intelligence. It's hard to kill people like that; but if I start making exceptions the mission will fail.

I was talking numbers. Somehow I would have thought China and India would have been higher given their population numbers. I personally think in a lot of these countries they don't identify and keeps tabs on serial killers the way we do in the West.
