Sometimes a pipe wrench is just a pipe wrench.

Don't worry, your friend will be back. He always comes back. Till he gets banned. Of course I could get banned from here too. Que sera, sera.

I'll blather in any manner I want to. It's my God-given right. And quit being so kind because I no longer trust you. You and your reacharound stuff. You should be ashamed. Do you really want to go to Hell when you depart from this plane?

I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

Moderator note: Gustav has been banned from sciforums for 3 days for posting inappropriate sexual content.

By rights, this ban should have been longer, due to active infraction points. If there were no active points, it would have been a warning only. This poster is a repeat offender who has been here long enough to know the site rules by now.

So "Fuck off, JDawg" isn't enough to warrant a ban or warning?

I thought he was calling me jDawg. I couldn't figure it out but then again, I can be pretty dense sometimes. Pb doesn't have anything on me.

Here's another forum where your friend Neverfly was banned and for the same reason: ranting about how unfair the moderation team was to him. Are you getting the picture here?

I understand that. But the reason you listed was for inappropriate sexual content. Lead me to believe that the "F off" part wasn't what got him in trouble.

I see several folks on the forum using the F-word. To be fair, in those cases it usually isn't directed at a forum member.

Telling somebody to "F off" is not automatically grounds for a ban. Such responses are very much context-dependent, and can be hard to adjudicate without reading through reams of past history between the posters involved. Moderators do not typically take sides in interpersonal disagreements. We act on clear breaches of site rules. We are not mummy splitting up a kids' fight. If the nasty kid tells you to go away, you can choose to respond or not, reply or not etc. We expect that, as a mature adult, you can deal with disagreements yourself. On the other hand, unprovoked personal insults may well attract the attention of the moderators, and the more blatant the insult the more likely we are to issue a warning or ban.

Interesting! So if a poster says something about me I don't like, I'm free to tell that poster to "F off?"

Why not post some content instead of whining about the minutiae of the rules?

I post content. Right now I'm trying to pin down why you're not doing your job as a moderator. Do a better job and you wouldn't have people holding your feet to the fire.

    Balerion:

You obviously have no idea what "doing my job" involves here. The vast majority of "doing my job" is invisible to members such as yourself. At present, a significant part of "doing my job" involves policing new registrations here, since we are currently being deluged with spam. How much spam are you aware of on the forum? I'm guessing that you've seen practically none in the past week. That is because I, and the other moderators are "doing our jobs".

My "job" is not to play mummy to you. You're a grown up. Why don't you act like one? Stand up for yourself rather than running to mummy complaining that the nasty person said naughty things to little Balerion and hurt Balerion's feelings. And most of all, grow up and realise that the world doesn't revolve around you. This forum has about 500 active members. You are just one person among many who wants his own way.

You obviously think you'd do a better "job" than I would. You think you're clever because you think you spotted a Reiku sock puppet before I did. I was suspicious of Aethelwulf within about two posts after he joined here, and I was already checking IP addresses. You think you're better than me because you can spot a pseudoscience nutter at fifty paces. If you were in charge, you'd ban the lot of them instantly and have a sterile forum only for your friends who you consider to be sufficiently educated in science and in agreement with your politics and other opinions. Well, I'm educated in science too. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I'm an expert when it comes to pseudoscience and its proponents, just as I am also an expert in several scientific fields. I do not moderate people because I disagree with them or because I don't like them or because they have different political views to mine. I moderate them based on the guidelines and principles that are clearly set out for all members of sciforums to read. If you don't agree with those principles or the general philisophy behind sciforums, then by all means state your case for change and your reasoning. But don't complain that we're not moderating people in just way you'd like if you made the rules.

As for your "holding [my] feet the to fire", I would be more concerned about that if you had something constructive to say. But most of your time on this forum seems to be spent criticising one person or another, or whining about this or that. You seem to bear petty grudges against a number of other members, and no doubt you'll happily add me to the list of people you dislike, if you haven't already. For somebody who appears to be moderately intelligent, it is a pity you spend so much of your time acting like a sulky teenager who has been dumped by his girlfriend.

Tell me, Balerion: have you got anything positive to say about sciforums and its moderators? If not, why are you here?

Sticking my nose into this one.

I have had a similar discussion with another member: Why aren't you moderators doing a better job of policing these discussions? Member A dissed me and when I dissed him back he got really nasty and started calling me names. When I retaliated, two other members started accusing us both of being trolls. So I flamed them and now everybody's calling me an a-hole.

My response to this was that I get bloody sick of my job becoming that of a grade school playground supervisor. Sally slapped Johnny, Suzie pulled Sally's hair, Frankie called Suzie a bad name, and Johnny punched Frankie.

Some days I feel like just permabanning everybody who participates in these trolling and flaming exercises. But then I realize there would only be about 20 members left.

If you would all just try to act like grownups, you wouldn't need so much moderation. Do you guys behave this way at your jobs??? Or are you all still in middle school? Sometimes you act like it.

If someone disagrees with you, respond to the issues, not the person. The world is full of jerks who do really good work and sweet people who are ignorant and incompetent.
