No, we need education based on rigorous science so that absurd statements like yours would be regarded as nonsense.

I usually buy a case of Coke every week for work. I love the stuff. However, I don't think I could drink more than one can at a time, but I can space them out throughout the day.

Neverfly and I go through a 24 pack of Dr Pepper every day or two. We are junkies I guess. But neither of us are heavy. He has a 29-30 inch waist even. I am a bit overweight but what 36 year old woman isn't . I'm 5'3" tall and about 160. so I'm no waif but not a pig either. Sugary drinks alone do not make a person obese. It is a combination of sedentary lifestyle, high caloric intake, and genetically inherited metabolisms. In my opinion, the sedentary lifestyle is the strongest negative influence on weight. I can go on a strict diet and only eat lettuce for a month but if I just lay around I won't lose much weight. I can eat nothing but donuts and drink pepsi for every meal but if I am up working my butt off, I will lose a helluva lot of weight. I know because I have done both. Activity is what most people are missing in their "diet"

If I want soda, I have to buy it myself. My wife usually buys lemonade or some other drink with less sugar, which is fine. Those just aren't my first choice.

You sure about that weight, 'cos I'm male, 5'8", with a 42" chest, 17" neck, 14" biceps, and I only clock in at a few more pounds than you, and I reckon I could do with losing a few.

I have a doctors scale in the house. I fluctuate between 155 and 160. Are your legs scrawny? lol. I did say I am not skinny. I'm just not a fat pig either. Most of my weight is carried in the preferred locations for a woman.

You also didn't mention what your body is mostly made of. Muscle weighs more than fat. So if you are out of shape you wouldn't weigh as much as a man who is very fit but with same measurements.

    New York Soda Ban

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg claims he will appeal a New York judge's choice to overturn the town's ban on sweet beverages served in cups larger than 16 ounces. The soda ban was supposed to have gone into impact on Tues, March 12, but it was overturned right before.

Quite. I can certainly see why people get annoyed by the nanny state.

On the other hand , as a Brit who did an assignment in Houston TX for a couple of years, I was appalled by the large numbers of grotesquely, disgustingly, fat people. You practically never see people completely out of control of their bodies like this in Europe. And I do suspect that the soft drink culture has a lot to answer for. I remember how everything in the US seemed to taste sweet to a European palate. Bread was sweet, potato crisps were sweet, even the jam was too sweet to eat. Worst of all, it was culturally normal for people to drink sweetened soft drinks with their food. (I recall a US colleague being appalled to find there were no soft drinks machines in our office in London. People looked blank and said well you can get tea and coffee. What's the problem?)

I suspect that this has created, in the palates of Americans, a constant background of sweetness, so that foods need more sugar in order to taste "normal". You get the same thing with people who habitually use a lot of salt on their food. Everything has to be saltier, just to cut through what the taste buds have got used to.

I therefore suspect that the way to control the obesity epidemic in the USA is to cut back the huge cultural influence of the soft drink corporations, who have made the abundance and ubiquity of soft drinks into a cultural symbol of plenty.

So, regrettably, borrowing techniques from how we have learnt to control the tobacco corporations may be the only way to do it, cherished freedoms to get appallingly fat notwithstanding.

These sizes are getting a little out of hand though. When I was in Texas I saw a woman drinking out of a 2 liter coke bottle......
