Why? There are some brilliant stories in the Star Wars universe, some of the games, some of the books. Should they turn them into movies? Probably not but it shows there are plenty of writers up to the challenge of writing a story like that. In fact I don't belive game writers get enough credit, sure some of them are bad or simplistic but others are brilliant and even if they seem stretched its because a movie plot goes for 2 hours, a game plot goes for about 60 hours

But Lucas is going to remain as a consultant to the project and I can't see him doing anything that doesn't live up to expectations.

After looking through the most popular Star Wars forums it becomes clear that most fans want Mara Jade to be the central character of the next episode.

This would be a tragic mistake for Disney.

Successful films almost always have a MALE protagonist who starts from obscurity...in other words, not from a position of fame and fortune.

Female characters are important as re-actors...in supporting roles. Their impact on the story is YIN not YANG.

Another interesting point about the original film is its use of Tarot archetypes.

The Death Star for example represents The Tower card...symbolic of catastrophe.

C3PO represents The Fool...always walking blindly into danger but somehow surviving.

Both Obi-Wan and Yoda represent The Hermit...the mystical recluse who intercepts in human destiny only when its most desperately required.

Could you be any more sexist? You can have female protagonists just like male, some of my favourite books have a female lead, tamora pierce's books spring to mind

Darth Vader of course is the Death card...robed in black and with a skull like mask.

Doesnt matter what you call it...the historical point here is that successful adventure films dont have female leads.

Yes, it was a flop! It was just Angelina with her big puffy lips blasting away at various villains and swinging from ropes. Wow!

Female characters are excellent for setting up snappy dialog. The all time best example of this is a 1946 film called The Big Sleep, starring Humphrey Bogart.

From what I've been reading from different sources, it is unlikely that the new Star Wars movies will based on any of the expanded universe stories (So no Mara Jade). Lucas also turned over treatments he had written for further episodes that would take place some years after the events in Return of the Jedi. They would involve Luke Skywalker in his 30's and 40's. This idea is bolstered, in my opinion, by the fact that Disney refers to the new movies as episodes VII, VIII and IX. I guess only time will tell.

They better make that 50s...its very difficult to a make an older actor look younger.

The other way around is easy.

Obviously that's a problem. This is not a corporation with a huge administrative staff, so there's going to be lots of inconsistency. You're all welcome to complain. Or start a thread in SFOG and see if anyone else feels the way you do.

By the way, when in doubt, your best bet is to do things my way.

Well I'm sorry he did that. James and I often disagree.

Sorry I didn't notice. If it happens again, please PM me.

Excuse me, I can't stop laughing. We are a rowdy crew and we have quite a few animated arguments on our super-secret subforum. Remember, we're all unpaid volunteers, basically doing jobs nobody else both wants and is qualified for.

That will surely change. It's changed on TV. "Xena: Warrior Princess" was a tremendously popular series. "Dark Angel" would have run for years if 9/11 hadn't been too similar to its fictional premise. "La Femme Nikita" was so popular that it's been revived as simply "Nikita" with a whole new cast and an exotic Vietnamese kick-butt heroine.

If they go this way, they could cast a new actor to play Luke.

The fans would NEVER...EVER accept anyone other than Mark Hamill as Luke.

There would be a mass boycott of the film at the very least...violent revolt at worst!

    (Insert Title Here)

I would only note that if the new episodes follow the New Republic, and require Luke Skywalker, there is no reason to not cast him.

More broadly speaking, I don't think I would worry about the third trilogy insofar as Disney knows what is at stake, and Lucas will not be entirely removed from the project.

I think where things will get silly is after they're done with those; there is no reason to think Disney won't simply disregard the Star Wars canon and bring us endless straight-to-video Ewok and Rainbow products such as Asguard mentioned. A Very Ewok Christmas, or Chewie and Tink's Big Adventure, or some dumb shit like that. Although I think The Wookie-Pooh Bear Death Match might have some potential.

That's a terrifying thought and sadly- I can see Disney Co. trying to cash in like that.

I think Mark Hamill should appear in the next episode in a BEARD.

Yes, he looks good in a beard, and can do dozens of different voices...you should hear his dead-on impression of Yoda.

He doesnt get a lot of credit for his acting but he's brilliant with voice overs.

His appearance in the film should be a shock that the audience were not expecting...like Han Solo suddenly returning to help his friend instead of making off with the reward money. The fans want a twist that makes them CHEER!

The ultimate set-up would be a scene harkening back to the first encounter with Yoda, where he plays dumb for a while with a young kid who wants to learn the ways of the force...possibly the son of Leia, his own nephew.

    Disney? Are you listening???

So far I have not been terribly disappointed with Disney's handling of classic fantasy motifs. (And Star Wars is surely more fantasy than sci-fi. It makes "Dune" look like an Asimov novel.)

Mrs. Fraggle and I are big Pooh fans and we thought "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" were wonderful. We sign our e-mails "TTFN." Piglet's revelation, "My worst fear is having to come face-to-face with my worst fear," left me speechless for an hour as I realized that was a perfect description of my childhood: my unwillingness to face the fact that I was afraid of my own mother.

I grew up with "Alice in Wonderland" and "Snow White" and the whole Disney canon--even "Song of the South" which is probably only available today to historians who specialize in racism. (Well of course I never actually grew up but you know what I mean.) Sure they change stories to be more impressive in the medium of animated film, but the sense of wonder is still there and when I finally got around to reading the print versions they were recognizable and not too different. Besides, many of those fairytales have been butchered in the re-telling anyway. Cinderella's glass slipper was really a fur slipper--the two words are homonyms in French--but if you're telling a fairytale there's nothing wrong with adding yet another preposterous element.

I have no complaints at all about Disney's handling of the Muppets, which are as sacred as anything gets in our house. Well, so long as they eventually produce that feature-length "Fraggle Rock" movie they keep promising us "next year."

So have faith, you Jedis. The Star Wars universe is getting pretty long in the tooth anyway. I haven't even bothered to see the last twelve, or however many there were. They could use some fresh DNA.
