And Now the Rumors Begin ....

And Now the Rumors Begin ....

First up ... Rob Frappier reports that "sources close to Harrison Ford who say that the iconic actor is 'open to the idea of doing the movie' and, moreover, is 'upbeat about it.'"

Nothing like unnamed sources telling us exactly what we want to hear to get things going, eh?

It would be a terrible mistake to drag more than one actor from the old trilogy into the new trilogy. That would make it an exercise in nostalgia...which doesnt go very far.

The new episode should be called 'Eternal Vigilance' and should take place just after the murder of Leia by a new resurgence of 'empire loyalists'!

Her teenage son is the only survivor of the attack and quickly sets out on a quest to find his only living relative...Luke!

Little does he know who or what his long lost uncle has become.

I still haven't figured out how to post a screen shot, photo, etc., onto this forum. Maybe it's not possible from a Macintosh. Anyway, check out this morning's (Monday Nov. 12 2012) "Brewster Rockit" comic strip. It's a great joke about this topic.

How did you get a .gif file from that website?

You'd never guess that I've been working in IT for 45 years. Just show me a keypunch machine and a magnetic tape drive and I'll dazzle you with COBOL.

It's a sucky fact, but one that's pretty much true: female (only) super-hero/action flicks just don't do well. We're discussing economics and the numbers don't pan out well for women hero-movies. The sexist ones are the little boys who refuse to watch them. There are rare exceptions:
    • Alien(s)
    • Underworld (the first movie, at least)
    • Kill Bill
    • Resident Evil
    • The Hunger Games
But even with those, Aliens, Underworld and Resident Evil ALL have "physically brutal" male characters to accompany the female through her journey. In Kill Bill, the selling point for American boys was massive amounts of gore and the fact that Quentin Tarantino produced them. With The Hunger Games, most of the viewing audience was females, but the good news is that THAT generation (teenage boys) went to see Katniss kick ass as well, which indicates our attitudes are thankfully changing. Guys are finally enjoying seeing strong women be strong characters with or without men. But those four movies are the outliers.

This is because of a cultural and (possibly) naturally psychological factor about most men: they do not easily identify with strong women in heroic roles. So, they tend not to see those movies. The list of female action hero duds is long and littered with big budgets, some with good scripts and well-known actors:
    • Cat Woman
    • Ultraviolet
    • Elektra
    • Aeon Flux
    • Hannah
    • Salt
    • The Long Kiss Goodnight
    • Colombiana
    • Sucker Punch
    • Tomb Raider

Now, when female action heroes are attached to male action heroes, the franchise doesn't just do better, but it does marketably better than just the men alone (and loan male heroes do far better than loan females -- we're overcoming stereotypes).
    • 5th Element
    • The Matrix
    • Star Wars
    • Avengers
    • Blade
    • X-Men
    • Harry Potter
    • Chronicles of Narnia
    • Percy Jackson & the Olympians

When you add up the numbers, men alone or men w/ women do better than female action heroes do. But as my little brother's generation gets older, that is thankfully moving in the right direction.

The same way I get all my Internet pictures. I put my cursor on the picture right click and select save picture from the drop down menu and then select a folder to save it to. From there it's just another picture on my hard drive that I can upload to Photobucket where I can now select it paste in the forum message box with the IMG tags already in place. Photobucket has been making some pretty good improvements and for a free account I currently have over 2,000 pictures already uploaded to it. I've got it set up so that as soon as I find any picture or group of pictures, I can copy them all and upload them ready to use in less than 5 min.

Hang on, aren't you being a little hypocritical there. If the matrix only worked because Trinity was backing up Neo, then what is wrong with Selene being backed up by Michael? All that really says is that people are more attracted to films which are gender balanced

As for your list of "flops" there are some awsome movies in there

I love long kiss goodnight and Aeon Flux wasn't bad either. Sucker Punch I refuse to watch because I already know the story and no matter what the "Alice" type scenes are the over arching story would rip my heart out so I don't watch movies like that

Little girls dont watch em either...they prefer 'The Princess Diaries' or 'Pride and Prejudice' when they get a little older.

Lesbian author Camille Paglia describes these hard-wired preferences very accurately in her wonderful book 'Vamps and Tramps'. You can see her poised below in renegade mode, as if surfing above the cultural wave of trendy feminist idiocy.

The ultimate feminine icon in the history of cinema has to be 'Solitaire' the character played by Jane Seymour in the James Bond film 'Live and Let Die'.

She not an action figure, but is nevertheless the beautiful and devious motivating force behind much of the action's meaning.
