Can you see that we are just as concerned about the mod-troll and fairness issue as you seem to be about what you are concerned about? The former goes to site reputation and moderation; the latter goes to site security. We have the solution for the former, which solution can be implemented as suggested; while the latter is up to the site managers per se....but no amount of victimizing members will solve THAT problem, since if the site is so vulnerable that a schoolchild can mess with it, then pissing people off can only keep increasing the potential for someone hacking us.

Net net: the potential for hacking is always there, even from someone unconnected with the site; so adding pissed-off people to the list of potential hackers is not a rational policy, is it? And anyway, I have it from a couple of mates of mine in the industry that it's not unheard of that hacking has been made easier by 'insider' complicity by someone 'trusted' by the site/owner. So if we are to be properly 'paranoid', it may be prudent to review who has/had insider access to sensitive information/tools which may be betrayed by pissed off insiders to malignant groups of hackers? Not accusing, just one of the many considerations needed to be faced whenever site security is being discussed/assessed. Good luck!

I know that. Apparently, I just misinterpreted the word "appear"

Bells does have a good point however. Your blocking of modposts could result in you inadvertently making yourself guilty of a bannable offense.

Hi enmos. I made the constructive suggestion before (part of the fairplay/process aims) that no one should be just banned suddenly (except for patent and extreme legal/abuse/troll etc).

People should be NOTIFIED via PM/EMAIL FIRST, and given the RIGHT OF REPLY for explanation, retraction etc etc OPTION in open forum BEFORE any ban is made. Then it wouldn't be so critical whether the alleged transgressor saw the mod posts or not. That way no-one is sent into limbo suddenly and is unable to defend/retract as appropriate before drastic action is taken (or not as the case may eventuate).

If all the common rights are respected and fair play in open forum and notification BEFORE banning is introduced, then the person in question cannot complain afterwards if the process has BEEN fair and open. If the notification is not answered within a reasonable time (allowing for time zones and other human condition considerations which may affect any individual poster depending on circumstances), then the mod can ban with a clear mandate and very little fear of complaint/opposition from genuine forum at large.

Justice needs to be done and seen to be done. Else problems are inevitable and the site will never be what it could be: great.

    Cheers and good luck!

Mod Hat — This ends now

Mod Hat — This ends now

Whatever else one thinks about the Gustav issue, it is now officially settled insofar as our neighbor will not be returning again under that user ID.

And while that doesn't specifically mean this thread is extraneous, as it has now become about other people and egotism, it seems to have outlived any reasonable purpose.

    Thus, it is closed.
