    I'm trying to look at gravity from a different perspective. I'm asking questions that nobody else wants to ask for reasons that should be obvious to you because you are definitely one of the reasons I regret asking them. I don't believe there is anything wrong with what I am doing and I would appreciate it if you would mind your own business if you are not going to contribute anything worth while or answer my questions.

I keep checking back here when I get an email notification that someone had replied to me and I'm hoping to find answers to my questions. It's very disappointing to find a reply like yours instead. So, if you don't want to answer my questions then would you kindly not reply any more, please?

    Absolutely not. You will be moving at the same speed as the earth along the path of the orbit. Without gravity you will need to hold on to something to keep from drifting away from the earth, if you were to let go you would fly away from the earth. If you let go at point A you would move away from the earth at a direction opposite of the arrow at B. If you let go at point B you would move away from the earth at a direction opposite of the arrow at C. If you let go at point C you would move away from the earth at a direction opposite of the arrow at D. I assume you see the pattern...

    Nope there would not be any force in that direction so you would not fall.

    There would be no momentum towards the sun. You like vectors so lets look at the vector directions. From the orbit of the earth your velocity would be in the direction of arrow A. From the rotation of the earth at point B your velocity would be in the direction opposite of arrow C. Since there is no gravity once you let go of the earth at point B you would move in the direction opposite of arrow C at about 1000 mph relative to the earth, so the earth is moving at the direction of A at 67,000 mph and you would be moving in the direction of A at 66,000 mph

    As I said before # 5 is incorrect.

    I'm on my phone, so I can't quote each part easily. I'll just ask my question.

    When I'm at point A I am traveling at the same speed as the center of the Earth, but I'm over 6000km from it. Imagine the curve of the Earth as a hill. The Earth has to push me to get me to go up and over the hill. Does my inertia mean nothing when the surface pushes me "up" that hill to the other side? Can you at least see why I don't think you're right?

    I tried to bring the same topic up a bit earlier, and it wasn't out of any desire to side track the thread. Rather, I (like gmilam, I think) was trying to come up with a simpler example by which to explain momentum to you. People, most recently origin, have tried to answer your questions in the surface-of-Earth context that you're asking about, but there are so many variables in play that you're getting nowhere. You want to factor in the orbital motion of the Earth, the rotation of the Earth, the normal force of the Earth's surface on an object, the angle between the Earth's rotational and orbital axes, the motion of the solar system around the galaxy... if you try to think about that many vectors at once without any rigorous mathematical framework, you're just going to get confused. So there are three ways to proceed:

    1. Accept everyone's assurances that most of these factors don't matter at all for the big picture. I promise, they really don't. But you're not one to take others' words for it, so you could instead...

    2. Do the math. Take all the velocity vectors you want for the center of the Earth and add them up to get a net velocity for the center of the Earth. Then add in the rotational velocity of the Earth's surface to get the net velocity of a person on the Earth's surface. (Be sure to keep track of direction as well as magnitude for both calculations.) Finally, take the difference of the two to find the person's velocity relative to the center of the Earth. If you keep everything as a general function of where the person on the Earth's surface, you'll see that there are plenty of locations where this relative velocity points away from the center of the Earth, which means that a person standing there would fly away if not for gravity. But you've said already that you're not great at vector math, so the only remaining option is...

    3. Try a simpler scenario. If you really want to understand everything that's going on without doing some vector addition, you'll have to pick a scenario where less is going on. gmilam and I independently offered one: why does the Earth (or in gmilam's case, the whole solar system) orbit the sun? There are no normal forces and only one angle of rotation in this problem. It's a simple case of one object moving in circles around another without the two ever touching. If you can understand why this scenario is impossible without gravity, you'll be a lot closer to understanding why the same is true for an object on the Earth's surface.

    Yes I can and it appears that the reason is you do not understand the difference between velocity and acceleration.

    To be fair Tach's comments were an unnecessary personal attack. Not just "openly insulting", and jiveabillion shouldn't have used that term because now you've misunderstood him.

    I do agree that he behaves like a Psycho sham artist or deluded child. Anyway, several posters have replied to all his technical questions, hopefully he'll understand it and let the matter rest. If he realizes his mistakes I think he'll just lie low.
