So... is it time to kill off this [P and M] sub-forum yet?

I mean, it's not like there's much meaningful stuff going on here, anyway.

There's still a tiny bit going on, but yeah it sucks that so many great members left and the cranks have started to overrun it. If I were moderating the place I would give the cranks a chance to have their say in one thread, and unless they could make valid scientific arguments to defend their case, I would insist that any further repetitions of their claims and attempts to recycle the same invalidated arguments are to go in one of the junk science sections, and I'd happily enforce that without hesitation if they refused to comply. I would also be very anally strict with anyone attempting to use abuse and harassment in lieu of reasoning to get their point across- "are you out of your f'n mind" would not in itself be an acceptable means of making a point without accompanying scientific reasoning (either established experiment, or theoretical arguments stemming from established theories).

But please, please please don't let them delete this forum. There are only perhaps a dozen or so cranks frequently invading this place to post their whimsical nonsense, if it were up to me I'd have them cleaned out in a single day so real discussions can resume.

I agree too, it seems that there has been a change in moderating practices for some reason.

How many of you comment against a crank topic to the moderator?

I haven't personally complained about any of the topics themselves as of yet, nor people trying their best to make an original argument. As far as I can recall, all of my complaints so far have regarded people who continuously repeat falsified arguments and then resort to pointless insults.

How should we deal with people like rr6 and Fork who post utter gibberish? Stuff that even a drunk wouldn't say?

    Anyway, I nominate you Cpt!

Yes, that or just the general absence of the mods. Perhaps it has something to do with it being high summertime right now where most of them live.

Case in point...why is this thread in the physics and math section? Please move this crap to the cesspool where it belongs!

    Uncalled for, MD.

I've also wondered about the lack of moderation lately. When was the last time someone communicated with a mod? Or alternatively, if a mod is reading this, could he/she post something just to reassure us that he/she is here? Thanks!

Not the cesspool, it should be moved to Site Feedback.

By the way you're contributed greatly to this problem.

Why don't we all PM them at the same time? That'll make them take notice.

if the mods don't do anything how about we just ignore those posters? don't respond. let them die a cold lonely death.

no need to give the reason that their rubbish must be countered so people don't think it is valid. if there are no responses then that should speak for itself.

That's true. Every time people attempt to counter a crank, it degenerates into ten pages of insults and silly statements.

Eh, I dunno. I take a certain masochistic pleasure in correcting stubbornly wrong people, and I'm sure some apparent "cranks" are actually just confused and would genuinely benefit from an informed response. Mostly I just want a mod to step in and move topics to the Alternative Theories subforum once all the useful physics has been squeezed out of the discussion (eg. jiveabillion's gravity thread) or remove posts that aren't even coherent enough to be wrong (eg. anything by rr6).

Logged on today, and found a veritable treasure trove of "thread moved" arrows. Don't know who did that, but thank you, whoever you are!
