The question which immediately comes to mind is so? Does it make a difference? I suggest not.

Wow, this is fascinating! And not surprising, at the same time. While the outcome means little to me, because I don't believe the Bible to be literal truths anyway, it is still mind boggling at times, that a religion could last this long, based on nothing but people trusting stories contained in a ''holy'' book, without any evidence to support them.

    Taken from the article:
How could this go unnoticed in the most scrutinised books of all time? "Many of the parallels are conceptual or poetic, so they aren't all immediately obvious. After all, the authors did not want the average believer to see what they were doing, but they did want the alert reader to see it. An educated Roman in the ruling class would probably have recognised the literary game being played." Atwill maintains he can demonstrate that "the Roman Caesars left us a kind of puzzle literature that was meant to be solved by future generations, and the solution to that puzzle is 'We invented Jesus Christ, and we're proud of it.'"

Is this the beginning of the end of Christianity? "Probably not," grants Atwill, "but what my work has done is give permission to many of those ready to leave the religion to make a clean break. We've got the evidence now to show exactly where the story of Jesus came from. Although Christianity can be a comfort to some, it can also be very damaging and repressive, an insidious form of mind control that has led to blind acceptance of serfdom, poverty, and war throughout history. To this day, especially in the United States, it is used to create support for war in the Middle East."

    Sad.

I find it laughable that government could ever pull off something so successful. This is nothing more than atheist wishful thinking.

I really believe that there are passionate people who will do crazy things like anger the government and religions of the day, just to make a point, even if they have to get crucified to do it.

I think we all have to find our own way; so, think as you wish.

wegs, I wish others would follow your example. There wouldn't be an argument f atheists would let worshipers worship without instigating a fight by calling them derogatory names or declaring them to be out of touch with reality. Only a small percent of the world population are true atheists, yet people get along just fine in reality, they work, pay taxes, raise their families, find love and happiness without having to sterilize the world of spirituality.

You don't have to believe. You have free will and I support your freedom not to believe. But I also support people's right to believe in their religions, and I'm not going to let a bunch of egghead atheists disparage them with some false enlightenment.

I still think you are the wisest non-believer here.

You know, Mazulu ...if you look at this site as a microcosm of offline life, you'll see that there's a blend of personalities, and some who are not atheists who are very condescending and arrogant. They claim to know God but what has that "knowledge" done for them? Your faith only means something if you live it. If someone acts superior to others, faith must be just something they pontificate about on an online forum. Point being, there are kind atheists and not so kind ones and kind religious/ spiritual folks and not so kind ones.

If someone claims to love God, they should make attempts to love his creation, no? That's the problem with these discussions; the hypocrisy is smothering at times. What they fail to realize is if a god exists, he doesn't care how well they conveyed their vast knowledge to everyone but rather he will care about how they treated others. That much, I know.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that only people who follow God are loving and kind, you will end up very disappointed when you find out that's not true. Everyone is human but it's funny to me that some of the rudest comments I've read on here have come from "spiritual" people. Faith is a hell of a lot more than telling others what you know, it's showing others how it's changed you. There is a member here who comes to mind and he doesn't post too often but think he is Buddhist. He makes me want to learn about Buddhism because of his humble spirit towards others.

    Food for thought. :m:

    wegs,
Believers love God and will defend what they love very vigorously. I have no doubt that your fiance is a really good man who loves you very much. I am also certain that if anyone said mean things about you, that your fiance would defend you. If Q talked about you the way he talks about God and about believers, your fiance would lay him out. It's all about defending what we love.

Believers don't have to defend God with words if they are living their faith. When I see believers here taking pot shots at me and others who have done nothing to warrant it, I don't get angry and rail back, I feel sorry for then because the supposed faith they follow must not mean much in practice. Anyone can read books and scripture and pass it down to us peasants. lol Live your faith. Be kind when it's hard. Be nice to people you disagree with. Then, I'll take a closer look at what that person has to say.
