I was toying with the idea that a near death experience "hallucination" might offer some kind of survival advantage, some evolutionary advantage to encourage certain animals not to give up. But then I realized that mice don't write books about the afterlife. So if a mouse has an afterlife experience, then it wouldn't help other mice or encourage other mice to live better lives. So there really is no survival advantage to having near death experiences (if you can't communicate the experience). So if mice have near death experiences, then it's probably because they have souls.

I suggested there is a consciousness field that exists independently of the physical world. When the brain creates conditions that are just right for consciousness, then consciousness is drawn forth from this field of consciousness.

Well I think the consciousness would be palpable. Just have to know about it.

I didn't say it's all violent, but as long as your belief system isn't based on evidence, it's vulnerable to the idea that magic can be harmful as well as good.

I don't understand what you're saying? If practitioners of magic can do good or do harm, then they have a moral obligation to do good. Many do. It's called spiritual healing, prayer, white magic,... If this stuff can improve quality of life for some people, then what's the problem?

Mazulu, quite a bit different from what you Posted around 9 hours back! :

Mazulu, what will you state 9 hours from now?

Nazulu, so where in spidergoat's Post (quoted below) does he express the "idea that all religion and magic as being violent" !?!?

Sorry, Mazulu, but that "PURE B@LLSH@T" , you refer to...it seems to originate from the Poster occupying the space between YOUR CHAIR and YOUR KEYBOARD!

How do you prove your magic was for good and not evil? By the way I don't think the Bible makes a distinction between good witchcraft and evil witchcraft. Plenty of ancient healers were burned at the stake for witchcraft which consisted of nothing more than herbal healing.

The practitioner will tell you what there intent is. You're right, many witches were burned at the stake. I don't condone that for anyone, not even atheists.

That's just what an evil witch would say. OK, my cow gets sick. I happen to walk past your hut and see you doing magic. I accuse you of making my cow sick and convince the village that you used black magic, so you should be punished. Your defense is that you say you weren't doing black magic. We have no way of confirming that (because there is no evidence of the magic being effective either way). Therefore you die, the victim of mob violence generated by irrational thinking.

spidergoat, good example. Probably wasted on Mazulu though, he seems to have no concept of "irrational thinking"!
If you do not mind I will restate your example ^^above^^ as I believe Mazulu would understand it. :

    .....................................................................................................................................................

--- That's just what an Atheist would say. OK, your cow gets sick. You happen to walk past my hut and think that I am an atheist. You accuse me of making my cow sick and convince the village that I used Atheism, so I should be punished. My defense is that I say I wasn't doing Atheism. We have no way of confirming that (because there is no evidence of the Atheism being effective either way). Therefore I die, the product of Justice generated by rational thinking. ---

    ........................................................................................................................................................

spidergoat, mind you, that is my estimation of Mazulu, from the way that he as chosen to relate to me.

I am not attempting to put words in your mouth or claiming that that is what you said.

Perhaps I think more of our dear brother than you do. Magical thinkers are just future rationalists.

That was not a dumb conclusion. But what survival advantage does the belief/hallucination of an afterlife have? I think the survival instinct is an instinct, and the reason only human ( not 100% sure about this, maybe whales and elephants too) are the only species committing suicide is just because of that belief.

It serves no survival purpose. Only makes death more comfortable, could that be a reason? Why must death be comfortable? Is it important to let go of the body? If so, what lets go of the body?

We go unconscious when we experience severe trauma, I think it cushions the mind and makes possible eventual recovery faster, with less chance of PTSD.

    spidergoat, Perhaps.

He seems to have a hard time with actually reading what is written in Posts and is constantly misinterpreting/changing/ignoring what is Posted.

Sometimes it seems intentional, other times it seems to be some form of ignorance.

I have tried, repeatedly, to have open, honest and rational "conversations" with Mazulu, only to have them "go south".
His mood/view/position seems to change at random and sometimes quickly.

He has on occasion related (what he states as his) fears in Posts and when I suggest that he try facing up to them, he goes off on a seemingly delusional/accusatory/irrational/you're an Atheist simply trying to destroy me rant.
Not sure why he believes me to be an Atheist.

At any rate, I honestly feel quite "hurt" for him at times, in an empathetic way. I hold no animosity towards him and wish him future success and happiness, but truly feel that he may need more help than he will allow himself to receive, especially on these Forums.

spidergoat, anyway, perhaps there may be a "future rationalist" there. Let us hope that if he does indeed need help, that he gets it and is allowed to shine.

Thanks for putting up with my "rant", and supplying your perspective - it was appreciated.

May you and yours Have a Happy Holiday Season.

If you have mob violence in your town, then people using black magic is not the problem. The problem is that civilization has broken down. You need to fix that first.

There are no elephants or whales who talk abou their near death experiences.

I'm not sure a "more comfortable death" makes any difference in evolutionary selection terms. However, it might make it more comfortable for the consciousness that is important from the "plane of consciousness".

What do you mean by severe trauma? Do you mean severe bodily injury? Yes, people do pass out from bodily injury. Occasionally someone has an out of body experience. Why?

Lack of blood to the brain. Maybe a flood of DMT from the pineal gland. Who knows? I'm certainly not jumping to the unwarranted conclusion that they are actually leaving their body. You are your body.
