In a nutshell. Mentally, Lorentz would position himself as an observer in the absolute ether. Giving a flashbulb some absolute motion, Lorentz would mark a flash of light to a point location in absolute space. Einstein would position himself as an observer comoving with the flashbulb in some uniform motion and keep the flash of light pinned to the flashbulb.
