    Oh, my.

Stay tuned. Details emerging. House Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) has been defeated in his primary by a Tea Party challenger. Details to come.

    † † †

    Update:

    Via Huffington Post:

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) was shockingly defeated in the Republican primary to represent Virginia's 7th District, the Associated Press reports.

Cantor faced what was considered a long-shot challenge from Dave Brat, a tea party-backed professor who has been a vocal critic of the House's number two Republican and highest-ranking Jewish member.

There is no Democrat in the race, leading to this lovely copy error:

Democrats did not field a candidate in the 7th District, so with Tuesday's win Cantor has clinched an eighth term in Congress.

Whoops. Anyway, that flub notwithstanding, Eric Cantor has been defeated. Primaried. Flanked. Welcome to Virginia's Seventh, where Eric Cantor is too liberal.

Only if you enjoy America being harmed.

By Cantor or some Democrat? Nope. That's why I'm glad a TEA Party candidate took his spot.

Me too, I think it will hasten the demise of the Republican Party as a national party.

Oh, they have about five years before they are back in power. (Not because of any specific quality they have, but because that's about the cycle time between parties in this country.) Our next president will likely be Republican for the same reason.

No way. Any Republican candidate would have to first make it through the primaries and the only way to do that is to be so far off the right that you're off the cliff and unelectable to a wider audience. It's happened time and time again.

According to the Wall Street Journal, there is a Democrat in the race:

So we have two college profs from the same school vying for Cantor's seat. Something else interesting, here are some of Mr Brat's published works:

    • “Ethics as Leading Economic Indicator? What went Wrong? Notes on the Judeo-Christian Tradition and Human Reason.”
    • “God and Advanced Mammon – Can Theological Types Handle Usury and Capitalism?”
    • An Analysis of the Moral Foundations in Ayn Rand.”

    Interesting.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was the immigration issue that did Mr Cantor in. I've been hearing for a while that the Republican leadership is hell bent on passing some sort of immigration reform before the November elections. The grassroots Republicans, on the other hand, are dead set against any such reform. I also think that those who oppose immigration reform oppose it much more passionately than those who support it. Passionately enough to turn out in large numbers and sink the candidacy of Mr Cantor in a low turnout primary.

I'm pretty sure that this defeat will put an end to any further talk of immigration reform. Cantor was in line to be the next speaker and absolutely no one saw this coming. I think even David Brat himself didn't really think he had any chance of winning (They say he skipped a bunch of meetings because he had to grade papers). The Republican leadership is certainly thinking if Cantor can go down, no one is safe.

Good! Because Republicans will never win the presidency without supporting immigration reform.

The GOP has happily adopted a number of leftist positions. The TEA Party will hopefully force them back to the right. If not, it may replace them as a true party of limited government. That benefits folks on the right either way.

    Works for me.

Republicans will never win the presidency if they do support immigration reform. Democrats are chomping at the bit to get access to tens of millions of shiny, new, socialist-voting "Americans".

You're opposed to the Constitutional principles of limited government? How very patriotic of you.

cute. but than again you are a tea party person. I'm opposed to ignorant people harming my country in an effort to restore some bygone era that never existed. we still have limited government. and I still love that you think the problem with the gop is its to left wing :

: I'm for limited government. I'm for all power being checked. I'm not for a bunch of corporate sponsered hacks attempting to bring back the robber baron era.

So you're saying that the size and influence of the American government today is the same as it was 220 years ago? Interdasting.

Which party do you vote for in elections?

They have a chance if they exploit the inherent religious conservatism of immigrants on social issues.

"Right-wing BS" like immigration reform? LOL.

And you can count me in as one of the people tired of the GOP. They're too eager to support big government.

And it seems that much of America doesn't care for either party:

Don't pretend the Tea Party is being simply patriotic, they don't get to own that sentiment. Constitutionally, we are allowed to regulate industry to a much larger degree than we already are.
