Incomplete reply won't go away

Several days ago, I started to reply to a post in the Calculating weighted averages thread in the Physics & Math forum. I don't recall whether I got distracted or by browser crashed or what, but the reply never got posted. Now it's too late and largely irrelevant. But I can't cancel it. The Cancel button that is usually at the bottom is not there.

I've logged off several times, but every time I log back in, there it is again.

What can I do to get rid of it? Or is there something someone else can do?

    Thanks

I'm not sure which post you're referring to, but you could PM Trippy (he's one of the mods of Physics & Math) to ask him to delete the post.
Make sure to mention the post number and to quote the post in question in order to avoid any confusion.

    It's not a post -- it's a reply that never got posted.

Here's what I see every time I log in:

I would just highlight and delete the words and move on to other threads. That is what I have done when I have changed my mind about posting.

I think what Jennifer is getting at is that, when she logs in, it immediately shows up -

Jennifer - clear your browser cache/cookies - I believe that kind of info is stored client-side, so that SHOULD clear it up for you.

    Yes, exactly.

Every time I log off, the board tells me that all cookies are cleared. I've attached a screen shot of the message. This seems like a bug in the board software to me.

I've cleared the cache and the history. I'm reluctant to clear all cookies. Don't they contain preferences and other useful information for other websites?

I've even tried a different browser.

If I don't get a better suggestion, I'll just post the reply and apologize for the inconvenience.

    Ah yeah, I agree.

You could do that anyway. Post it, then delete it yourself (Edit - Delete)

OK, good point. But it is curious that the Cancel button is missing (using both Firefox and IE). That should not have anything to do with cookies.

It is curious, I agree. If you aren't able to delete or even edit it after posting contact Trippy.

I've encountered this. I'm willing to bet your problem is that you, at some point, used the multi-quote function. I had to go back to the post I multi'd and uncheck the option.

I may well have used that function, but I think it was awhile ago when I was first on the forum. I thought it was a way to split the parts of one message. I later learned that it was to quote from different messages.

Where do I uncheck that option? I don't see it on the reply that I cannot get rid of, but then I don't have the Cancel button either. I also don't see it on the post that I was replying to?

I'm going to name this the Jason reply. In the olden days, we would have called it a bad penny.

If this the same problem I had, you should see a check mark next to the second quote option on his post. See how there's the "Reply with quote" option? Next to it is the quote symbol with a + next to it. If you multi-quoted, there will be a check-mark instead of a +. Just click it again and the problem should stop.

If I log in, I get the unfinished reply, a screen shot of which I already posted earlier. I've reattached it here.

Since this is already a reply, there is no Reply button, with or without the "+" sign or check mark.

If I go to the post that the reply was for, I do see the three reply options (reply, reply with quote, reply+). The Reply+ has the "+", not the check. Here's that screen shot:

So I'm not sure what you want me to uncheck. I even checked all of the posts in that thread. In all of them, the Reply+ option has the "+" sign, not the check.

I was fearful about deleting all cookies, so I did a little research and figured out how to delete just the SciForums cookies, which I did. That did not solve the problem. The Jason Reply is still there. Wasn't there a song many years ago entitled something like The Cat Came Back? Maybe I should break out the guitar and make lemonade...

I guess it's time to call in Trippy. Let's see if I can figure out how to do that.

Then I'm afraid I'll be of no help to you. Sorry, and good luck getting it sorted.

Interesting... I'm honestly not sure at this point what is caching that information to you - I didn't believe the forum software did that... but I could be mistaken.

Perhaps it's the auto-save function gone wrong.
I just tested it. Wrote a reply then logged off with the reply unfinished. Upon logging in nothing interesting happens, but when I reply to your post again there is a "Restore Auto-Saved Content"-button in the bottom left. So it appears the content is stored server-side.

    Edit:
Jennifer, what happens when you refresh (F5)?

Maybe it's one of the "great mysteries". I used to get that a lot in Sunday School.

I only get the Jason Reply if I log in. If I just click on the link in the notification email, as I did to get here this time, I don't see it.

I wonder if there are cookies that don't include the text "sciforums". I only deleted cookies that had that text.

I've sent Trippy a message and referred to this thread. We'll see what happens.

    Ok, try this:

    Write something in the reply.
    Wait until Auto-save kicks in.
    Log off.
    Log back in.
    Press "Restore Auto-Saved Content"-button.
    ...
Does a cancel button appear now?

If this doesn't do anything start replying to the same post again but don't enter advanced mode. Then repeat what's above.
