    Anyone downloaded and tried it?
    If so, your impressions?

Why would any sane person put themselves through that kind of pain? Why would anyone pay for a broken "operating system" that stole all the wrong bits of CPM, raped IBM over OS/2, and has consistently failed to follow RFCs through it's entire history of fucking people's machines up?

Why would anyone pay, when you can just put a round through your PC and be just as happy?

I don't know any gamers who've tried it yet, but I expect they'll have some choice comments as well.

Microsoft has indicated that Windows 10, which will be released next year, could move towards a subscription-based model. Instead of going the usual route and buying a perpetual Windows 10 license for $50 to $200, you would instead pay a few dollars per month — and then, as with most subscriptions, you’d get free upgrades when major new versions of Windows come along. Another option might be that you get a basic version of Windows 10 for free, but a subscription would unlock more advanced features — this is the scheme that Microsoft currently uses with its Office for iOS apps.
Speaking at a conference in Arizona, Microsoft’s COO Kevin Turner spoke quite frankly about the rapidly changing tides of the PC market, and how ultimately Microsoft has lost a big chunk of its money-making potential. “The first 39 years of our company, we had one of the greatest business models of all time built around … the Windows client operating system,” said Turner, and then spoke about how Microsoft is pivoting to
become a cloud- and devices-oriented company.

Marketing woo that suffices to prop up a flawed product, and continue to charge for it.

That's the way I feel, and no apologies.

I have read many comments from people who have tried this free version. The impression I get is that it is a big pain to install and problems with memory hogging and response. I presume they will eventually get rid of the kinks. Since the free version will be available for a while (one year?), I would wait till these kinks are ironed out before trying it.

I've been waiting for them to get rid of the kinks since 1989. Wish in one hand...

I built a spare PC to try out the free RC. With modest hardware (e6550 dual core, four gigs of DDR2, and a Western Digital Raptor drive from 2007) it ran Win10 very nicely. I liked it, it seemed to combine the best of Win7 and Win8. I did not care for Win8, and stuck with 7. It runs faster than Windows 7 did on the same hardware.

Since Windows 10 went live, I've upgraded my home theater PC, and a backup PC, and in both cases the upgrade worked fine. With my HTPC, I had to update the Nvidia graphics driver when the upgrade was complete, but all of the hardware was working fine, and I didn't even have to reset my wireless connection.

I'm going to upgrade my primary PC soon.

I think, one who knows how can divide memory into two parts and keep present OS for one, while downloading Win 10 into the other. - That is my plan, when a computer expert is again here. I suspect both parts probably need the same OS, but then one (only) can get "up-graded" for free.

Not memory, but disc partitioning. Or simply completely separate drives..

Thanks, but I have only a large solid state memory - no disk - in my ASUS "sonic Master" - it cost a nickel less than 500 dollars a couple of years ago at best buy.

I did it a couple of days ago, and I was fairly happy with Windows 7. Now my Live Email is screwed up and from Windows 7 to Windows 10 is quite a learning curve. Anyone on windows 8.1 should feel right at home on Windows 10. Other than that the install pretty much went smoothly and took about 2 hours with no interventions required on my part. Windows 10 is a free download and pretty much works just like your regular monthly updates. It was the simplest upgrade I've ever done and I've been doing them since DOS2.0.

I upgraded from Windows 7 a few days ago.

Windows 10 has some functionality that Windows 7 lacked. Probably Windows 8 users won't notice much difference.

The download took quite a long time on my slowish connection. The upgrade process went smoothly, though it took about an hour and a half to work its way through my 4-year-0ld laptop. It left me with 2 mysterious hardware devices on the laptop that apparently have no Windows 10 drivers and that are listed only as unidentified devices. That hasn't had any obvious effects, as far as I can tell so far.

Windows 10 seems to have the odd bug or two. For example, a process called "Runtime broker" kept wanting to use a whole heap of CPU time, heating the CPU and making the cooling fan run like mad. It can be killed temporarily, but it self-resurrects after a while. I am not the only person who has had this issue. There are a few suggested solutions on the web. In the end, the only one that worked for me was to edit the registry to prevent the process from starting. I'm not entirely sure what it does.

An SSD can be partitioned as multiple volumes just the same as a hard drive. To the OS, they are the same thing: a storage device.

James I have a 100M Internet service and it was still about a 2 hour install process.

I have several machines. Most have WIN 7, but the laptop has WIN 8. I had many problems with WIN 8 initially - some were pretty bad and hard to get resolved (think hours of phone support from Bombay). When I finally got it running OK, I found that 1/2 of my Steam games won't run with WIN 8. Then they started emailing me to get a free upgrade to WIN 8.1 so I tried to do that several times. It failed every time so I quot doing that.

I think I will sit this one out for a while as I anticipate disappointment otherwise.....

Me too, at least until I learn the "install for free" is about to end. I now like my Win 8.1 (on my touch screen computer) so don't see the need of Win 10.

The free installation is supposed to run for a year, I think - until next August.

Windows 10 has all the same touch-screen features as Win 8.1
