I've often pondered if there may be an effect on reality of lots of people paying attention to the same thing. How could we measure the effect? What would the effect be? Does it increase order or indeterminacy? Here's an experiment performed by Dean Radin and company on the effects of collective attention at Burning Man on various random processes. See what you think:

    http://noetic.org/research/projects/mindatlarge

"Have you ever experienced a time when the collective enthusiasm of a large event seemed to rise to such a peak that you could almost feel a crackle in the air? Or felt a haunting sense in the air while visiting a place that caused sadness or suffering for thousands of people? Provocative evidence suggests that there are significant departures from chance expectation in the outputs of random number generators (electronic devices that produce truly random bits, or sequences of zeros and ones) during times of collective upheaval, global crises and major celebrations..."

I think there could be something to that. Id like to see more research. I remember watching something a few years back, and they were talking about an increase in activity(what I can't remember, some kind of human activity) around and before major events. 911 was one such event that they were talking about.

That's probably the Global Consciousness Project at Princeton. It's been going on for 15 years..

That's it. The crazy part is increased activity before the event happened. I haven't had a chance to browse that site yet for any evidence of that. Could just be BS by the producers of whatever I was watching.

Where's the evidence on the global crises and collective upheaval?

Lemmings follow the pack even when they are going off of a cliff to their demise. They just follow blindly as they all think they are heading in the right direction even when they aren't.

It was not an insult it was an observation.
Here is a link to what Magical Thinking is.

    From the artical:
Magical thinking may lead people to believe that their thoughts by themselves can bring about effects in the world or that thinking something corresponds with doing it.

That is precisely what this thread is about!

You mean the discredited wako Dean Radin?

How has he been discredited? Are the results from the burning man experiment just bogus?

Those of you with functioning critical faculties may find this Rationalwiki link relevant and amusing: http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Noetic_science

I had not realised that that charlatan and abysmal writer Dan Brown was involved. We learn something every day. But, if evidence proof were needed that this is bunk, then Brown's attentions should eliminate all doubt.
