This "Proell Effect" and this Kenneth Rauen guy make me laugh. I googled him and found his resume, which I print below (tabulation a bit garbled in transfer but you will still see what he has done in life):

    PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Self-employed Alternative energy research and consulting.

    2002 to present

Cold Fusion Laboratory Manager and Research Scientist for New Energy

Technology, Inc. Research Laboratory, NERL, a division of CFTI. Perform-

1999 to 2002 ing frontier physics investigations into alternative energy,

primarily in cold fusion, aether energy, and advanced thermo-

dynamics. Contributing author and reviewing scientist for

Infinite Energy magazine, another division of CFTI.

Carl Zeiss IMT Field Service Representative installing, calibrating, and

Corporation repairing coordinate measuring machines, primarily in

1996 to 1999 the automotive and machine tool industries.

Roberts Sinto Field Service Representative building, installing, and

Corporation starting up sand casting presses for the foundry industry,

1994 to 1995 primarily at the Ford Windsor Casting Plant.

D&B Engineering Field Service Representative building, installing, and

1994 to 1995 starting up automatic fluid fill machinery for automobile

    assembly plants.

Self-employed Instrumentation Subcontractor in the waterworks industry.

    1993 to 1994

Wild Apple Industrial Hygienist, consultation and measurement of

Enterprises, Ltd. noise and chemical exposures in industry.

    1989 to 1993

LCS Controls, Inc. Field Service Engineer, industrial process controls for

1984 to 1989 freshwater and wastewater treatment plants, and hydropower.

Producers Color Injection Molding Specialist, in charge of the replication

Service, Inc. process for laser video disc manufacturing in research and

1981 to 1983 pilot plant production (just prior to the advent of CDs).

Ford Motor Co. Laboratory Test Engineer at the Milan Plastics Plant, testing

1978 to 1981 raw materials and finished parts to engineering specifications.

    EDUCATION

University of Detroit Bachelors of Science, Chemistry, 1978

    UNQUOTE

So here we have someone who has bummed around for years in lowly positions in a disparate range of different industries, none of them remotely connected with thermodynamic research, who suddenly has shown that he can break the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. If I were interviewing someone like this for a position, I'd be asking searching questions about why he has not stuck at any line of work and after 20 years of working life was still a Field Rep - the grade at which people generally join an organisation.

    I smell a scam here.

Can you explain the operating principle of this engine that breaks the 2nd Law please? I understand it makes use of the "Proell effect" (to which I can find no references whatsoever except on Free Energy websites), which is said to be a kind of natural Maxwell's Demon. Please explain the energy flows in this engine.

And please provide details of the three scientific conferences at which "none of the physicists present" could find anything wrong. Were there in fact, any physicists present? Were they really scientific conferences, or just Free Energy crank gatherings? Was there a clear explanation of the operating principle, or was it the sort of incomprehensible word salad that appears in the abstract of the AIP paper?

And this same Ken Rauen, when not overturning the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, has created an alternative to the Standard Model of particle physics, too, eh. Not bad for someone who has spent his life as a field service rep for various industrial equipment makers.

.......Reminds me, must cut down on the spliffs..............

    Indeed. Under http://pesn.com/2014/08/18/9602529_Another_Fuel-Free-Piston-Engine_by_Aesop/
And repeated in bold face later there. '3-D graphene' translates as plain old fragile graphite. Aside from the basic thermodynamics issues, very poor mechanical robustness provides a 2nd-tier defense against any conceivable viability. A not particularly savvy 'angel investor', swayed by the buzz-words combo of 3D printing and graphene, might fail to notice such details.

Haha, I checked that yesterday. The usual jam tomorrow promises, claims that commercial units are just round the corner, that non-binding orders are being taken, but bugger-all in terms of documentary evidence from disinterested parties that the damned thing works. Just a load of lawsuits from various parties and commercial enterprises with whom he has managed to fall out, as usual. He's been stringing people along for years on this. I am mildly surprised that Rossi is not yet in jail again. But then this guy Mark Goldes manages to stay out of jug somehow, too.

In fact, I have found this website: http://pesn.com/2012/04/28/9602083_...to_Produce_Fusion_and_Transmutation_in_Water/

seems to have no end of bogus "inventions" that promise free energy, from "Blacklight" power (remember them - the sub-ground state hydrogen people?) to the above ludicrous example in which cavitation, zero point energy and nuclear reactions strong enough to induce radiation sickness (oh yeah?) are all woven together into an elaborate tissue of ballocks.

I get the feeling that quite a number of people have worked out you can earn a living from suckers' donations to scams like these, so long as you move fast enough to keep ahead of the inevitable proof of your failures.

(By the way, I somehow don't think we'll hear more from "Breakthrough Energy Guy". Just a passing seagull, triggered by someone looking up his website, I suspect. But I was gratified that he mentioned Tesla: he gets several crank points for that.

Interesting that they never address the concerns. True, there is a huge energy potential between the hot atmosphere (several hundred Kelvin) and cold outer space (2.7 K); BUT you need to draw the energy potential from there (not here on earth); i.e. between the atmosphere and space. Drag a long wire in the atmosphere, with the other end in space, and you'll develop an electric potential. Good luck with keeping the system orbiting earth, though; let alone getting the energy beamed down to earth. (Oops, I might have triggered someone to claim I support their claims - Nope, I don't.).

Yeah that's the thing. Identifying potential sources of energy is dead easy. Making them available, in suitably converted form, at practical cost, is what separates the men from the boys. The last thing we need is buffoons claiming to have rewritten the laws of physics and promising endless bounty if only we give them our money.
