Neuroscientist Dr. Michael Persinger Discovers Telepathy!
    Postby Scepcop » Sun Dec 05, 2010 9:48 am

"Well well, look what we have here. Dr. Michael Persinger, the famous Neuroscientist at Ontario University, an Atheist hailed by skeptics for his "God helmet" experiments as being evidence against NDE's being evidence for an afterlife, has turned the tables on his skeptic admirers by announcing that he has now discovered a proven telepathic link in his experiments with test subjects connected by magnetic fields. See his interview and lecture below.

    http://www.skeptiko.com/michael-persing

Neuroscience Researcher and Laurentian University professor, Dr. Michael Persinger, demonstrates telepathy under laboratory conditions.

Claims of telepathy, ESP and other psi phenomena are a mainstay of popular culture but taboo in neuroscience research circles. Fortunately, Dr. Michael Persinger of Canada’s Laurentian University has never been afraid to venture where other researchers fear to go. In the 1980′s Persinger made headlines with his “God Helmet”, a device that stimulates temporal lobes with a weak magnetic field in order to produce religious states.

Now, Persinger has discovered the same type of brain stimulation can create metal states conducive to human telepathy. “What we have found is that if you place two different people at a distance and put a circular magnetic field around both, and you make sure they are connected to the same computer so they get the same stimulation, then if you flash a light in one person’s eye the person in the other room receiving just the magnetic field will show changes in their brain as if they saw the flash of light. We think that’s tremendous because it may be the first macro demonstration of a quantum connection, or so-called quantum entanglement. If true, then there’s another way of potential communication that may have physical applications, for example, in space travel.”

While Persinger’s experiments could prove groundbreaking, he remains doubtful about his controversial findings reaching his colleagues, “I think the critical thing about science is to be open-minded. It’s really important to realize that the true subject matter of science is the pursuit of the unknown. Sadly scientists have become extraordinarily group-oriented. Our most typical critics are not mystic believer types. They are scientists who have a narrow vision of what the world is like.”

You are going to need a MUCH better source than that trashy site to convince me of ANYTHING.

These experiments are well known to those interested in this type of research, and I have personally contacted Dr. Michael Persinger in efforts to use his technology with my own as we both reside within a few hours of each other.

Even though the successes can be described as astounding to some, the truth is no psychic experiment involving humans can be fully replicable 100% of the time.

So sadly this will never prove telepathy, but it is certainly interesting.

    Skeptico NOT Skeptiko

Please note that this blog is Skeptico and NOT the similar sounding Skeptiko. The latter, which seems to concentrate mostly on Podcasts, appears to present mostly a woo-ish version of research into psi, while pretending to wear the mantle of science and skepticism.

    Telepathy is real.

I have done it twice. The first time inadvertently between my wife and I. She called it an assault as our brief contact was at an emotional level and I made her cry.

The second I have no witness to confirm the reality of the contact as my impression was of contact with what I would call a collective unconscious or universal mind with many individuals in it.

It may exist in the magnetic shield of our planet as Persinger thinks but I could not tell from inside of it. There were no visual cues for me to gage what it looked like or where it was.

Even without telepathy several of you will be able to tell almost exactly what I am thinking.

These forums establish that necromancy is real.

It boggles my mind that some otherwise intelligent people believe in telepathy.

When scientists investigate brain function, they attach sensing devices directly on the skull.

To the best of my knowledge, brain activity is not detectable from inches away frm the skull (I might be wrong in this)

I am certain that it is not detectable from 2 feet or further from the skull.

It seems to me that believers in telepathy think that a human brain can detect detailed information from another brain over a distance of at least several yards, with some claiming it is detectable over much greater distances.

Such folks seem to believe in a method of transmission via some unknown phenomenon which is undetectable via any currently available scientific instrument.

The above is not even good SciFi: It is fantasy!!

Not that I wish to lend any credence to the extraordinary conjecture of telepathy, but your refutation above presupposes that it operates via the known mechanisms we have been looking for with our detectors. Namely, electrical brain activity.
I would surmise that, if telepathy were to be real, we have not discovered the transmission mechanism by which it occurs.

Again, I won't accept telepathy exists until and unless we can establish a mechanism and some evidence, but the fact that we don't detect it with our electrical probes is not strong evidence against it.

I admit to having had two telepathic experiences.

I have a witness to one of them.

Why would I or others who claim the reality of telepathy make such a claim while recognizing that many like you will think it a lie or delusion?

Why open one's self up to ridicule?

    Plausible explanations:

    1. You are a troll.
    2. You are a fool.
    3. You are mentally ill.
    4. You are gullible.
    6. You are bored.
    7. You are a smug bastard.
    8. You lack a proper education.
    9. You are a masochist.
    10. Etc.

You like to feel superior to us sciency types.

Those who think so, without proving it, are poor thinkers and I do not care what such thinkers would think.

Having such an experience does not offer such a feeling.

I have done what some have not and others have done what I cannot.

Superiority or inferiority does not apply.

I would not put those labels on you simply for sharing your experience with us.

But I am skpetical of how you were able to draw a "telepathy" conclusion from two isolated incidences among the millions of times you did not know what someone else was thinking.
How do you objectively bona fide telepathy from mere coincidence?

It is not uncommon to know, through sheer coincidence, what someone else was thinking at a particular time.

I do not blame anyone for skepticism. I was as well to all PSY phenomenon before my experiences.

Skeptics today have to call a lot of scientists liars to deny their work. Science can replicate what I see as the fringe of telepathy. When one does it to the depth that we can reach, it hurts. Science seems to not even be close to that depth. I think it is because telepathy is driven by a deep emotional desire and purpose.

When questioning my wife after I inadvertently touch her mind for just 1 or 2 seconds, I instantly made her cry. The called it an assault.

The second time I think I found what Persinger is finding. That there is a real cosmic consciousness or that we are all partially connected to it or to each other. From inside it, it is impossible for a mind to know. More time inside it might give clues but I was only able to sustain contact for 5 or 6 seconds before my own bout of crying, from both the mental pain and pleasure forced me to retreat.

Unfortunately, this all presumes the conclusion.

I'd look for more mundane explanations before creating one out of whole cloth.

Well, that's just a silly remark. You asked why you make posts that opened you up to potential ridicule. I obliged by providing a list of some of the plausible reasons you might do so.

You did not ask for proof as to why you post as you do. You asked a very specific question; I provided very specific answers. Now you appear to have a problem with that and have become defensive. I am sure sound thinkers will be able to use that datum to narrow down the number of motives for your posting behaviour.
