When and how do you decide what branch of the field to work in? I quite like organic but I dont know what kind of job that would get me.I'm up to the 200 classes and my electives are all done, Should I be narrowing it down? The education has to match a job I like that also pays well. Feel lost. I dont want to go into one specific thing just to realize my job entails working in a lab in a hospital doing repetitive tasks.
First learn chemistry, than think about pay. For a good while all hobs become routine , And if you become manager you hardly will see chemistry but paper pushing
Maybe you need to talk to some of your professors about job prospects or a school counselor or maybe both. You might also talk to a few recruiters for pharmaceutical companies or other potential employers. Selecting a major is a difficult decision. I struggled with it too. I funded my education with my own labor. You might want to consider creating your own business a la Theranos but do it the right way rather than the wrong way. I suggest you contact some of the industry trade groups like American Association for Clinical Chemistry, attend their conventions and meet some people. It's a bit late, but they are meeting this Monday, and there is always next year. But there is nothing stopping you from picking up the phone and calling them and asking to speak to someone who can answer your questions and give you some advice. As you mature in a profession, your job changes. When you start out, you will be doing all the grunt work. But as you mature and develop your skills, you may get more responsibilities. You may go into management and that's a whole other ballgame or you may enter another profession. Life changes.
I took economics now I am a juggernaut in several industries pushing the envelope in design art and business. Economics taught me to see the big picture. Now I'm planning my next business to go into design of all types. First graphic design, second web design, These I can do myself. Then software design, video design, industrial design and finally 3D animation design. From this platform of design skills I'm going into school to take Chemistry and Biology so that I can bring forth a medicine design and manufacturing company based on blood or DNA.
