I generally don't need to use this very much.
And for most purposes, snagIt does a fine job, but it does not capture audio.
    Same with VLC media player.

I tried a few other free softwares, but the problem with most of them is that they seem to create files of enormous sizes.
Capturing screen for 10 minutes usually results in 4-5 GB size file and I don't want that.

I think what I liked best so far was a light-weight software called krut, but even that is far from being satisfactory. The file size still ends up at over 500MB for 10 minutes and the format is .mov, .mp4 is preferable.

I think best would be if VLC could capture audio. It takes less space and the format is .mp4.

    Any suggestions?

Try : " 17 - Ok, this isn't about VLC but I'm guessing the real question is "How do I easily record my desktop, with audio, preferably with a free open source app?"

I gave up on obscure VLC command lines and found another piece of software called ShareX, which is free and open source.

    It's pretty easy:
    Download and install ShareX. - https://getsharex.com/ -
Run it and click Capture->Screen Recording...
It asks you if you want to automatically download ffmpeg.exe, say yes.
Next go to Task Settings->Capture->Screen recorder->Options
Change the video source to screen-capture-recorder (it's a bit fast in my experience), and the audio source to your microphone (or whatever).
    Use Capture->Screen Recording again.
It will now even let you select the area of the screen to record!

This is much nicer than VLC. The only downside is that the colours seem a bit off for me - less bright than they actually were. I'm not overly bothered though.

    Edit

In recent versions you can hold Shift to do square recordings and Alt to snap to common resolutions.share

Could it possibly be due to your 'browser' or your 'browsers' settings...that the website getsharex.com doesn't open in your pc ?
The site : https://getsharex.com/, opens just fine in 'Internet Explorer', 'Epic Privacy Browser', 'Avast Safe Zone' and 'Opera'.

I kind of solved the problem.

The reason why capturing results in huge files is because they are not compressed.
I used a free software called camstudio with proper compressing codecs like x264 or xVid, and it works with proper settings.

I use DAP to download and file both music and video. I like the feature that you can choose to capture only the music or the entire video.
Then I use VLC for playback and broadcast. Of all the FREE players, VLC offers the best sound controls. I especially like the 2 pass feature which along with the right equalizer settings can generate some really excellent results. I often get comments on the sound received by the listeners.
