Hello fellow sciforumers. I am new here so please be patient with me.

My question is as follows: drugs have existed since the beginning of time but will we develop computer drugs in the future i.e. flashing lights and images that alter mood. Epilepsy is a form of such a thing (I believe) i.e. flashing lights that cause "fits", but will we develop artificial mood altering "things" later in life?

    Thanks, Counter.

We already have them: music is used to calm people down, or to energise. "Mood lighting" is commonplace - the lighting of a place helping to set the mood, which is more intimate restaurants have dim lighting etc. There are also light systems that are meant to help people overcome jet-lag (blue light is meant to be the key, apparently). Aroma therapy, etc. Even food could be considered as such (comfort food etc).
So there are plenty of things already that fall under the banner of artificial mood-altering "things".

I agree. Music was my first thought. But does anyone agree that computer drugs are the future??

What exactly do you mean by "computer drugs"? What are you imagining by the term?

Already here. I use generative algorithms to create hallucinatory experiences.

The premise of this thread is wrong: a drug is a chemical/biological substance that is taken into the body and physically alters it. Music is not a drug, exercise is not a drug and flashing lights are not a drug.

    Hi Russ:
If you lump the subsets music, exercise, and flashing lights together in a mega-set, what one word would you use to describe that mega-set?

Yeah. That's why I was suggesting they're different modalities (ways something is done), and the superset doesn't really exist - unless you use them in neurotherapy.
