Is it your purpose/duty to rid folk of this terrible superstition, or are you secretly hoping to join this band of superstitious folk. As we know you are a strong atheist, why do you persist in discussing God? Jan.
This may be news to you, but atheists think the subject of God is important. We do believe the subject exists, just not the God itself.
So you believe God does not exist, but love talking about God. Interesting. Maybe it is possiblet o have your cake, and eat it after all. You got a hand it to God. Eh! Not you! Of course (wink wink). Jan.
Indeed. For the same reason I discuss American politics, Pro-(Life/Choice) issues, the braking dynamics of all-weather tires and the plot of Harry Potter books. They are part of society, whether I am directly impacted or not. Why would God be any different?
Why discuss something that is non existen to you? What other non existent personalities do you discuss on sciforums? Jan.
Harry Potter is fiction but it's a good topic of discussion. UFOs are unverified but it's a good topic of discussion. There are an infinite number of things that can be discussed whose actual existence is not required. I'm not sure why you think one can only discuss things that one thinks are real. How would you ever discuss... - your dreams - your imagination - Bob's encounter with a ghost - a rubber ball with a picture of Hugh Grant on it. ? This is pretty basic stuff.
Harry Potter does exist, and when we discuss him, we do so in the way that he exists. They're unverified to you, and people who think like you. So I take it if I go on the UFO forum, your input will be something close to the intensity you display here? Not talking about non requirement of existence. We are talking about non existence. Why is God so important to you? Jan
↑ God is superstition caused by the natural process of evolution.!!! I dont thank the promotion of superatition is a good thang... but i woudnt flip a switch that coud instently get rid of it (to much of a shock for many believers) -- i have confidence that education will rid the worst of superstition from humanity... an in the meantime while others continue to promote superstitious ignerance i continue to pont out the absurdity of it.!!!
I brought it up because I wasn't sure where your response came from. It certainly didn't have anything to to with the OP. Jan.
Harry Potter is a concept. We can read about this concept, and write about it, and even get an actor play it in a movie. It's a concept we can all understand - whether or not it is extant in the real world. Yup. Does not prevent discussing them. Yup. Yup. Just like with Harry Potter and UFOs, and any other topic. It makes no difference to the discussion. Ah! A separate question for a separate thread. Will you next go into the media section and ask why Harry Potter is so important to me? This whole sidebar, by the way, is a form of ad hominem. The only thing relevant to a debate is the logic presented. The circumstances of the person presenting the logic are irrelevant. What you are doing is analogous to asking: - why anyone but a woman would bother discussing pregnancy, or - why anyone but a man would bother discussing testicular cancer. Those are ad hom fallacies.
I don't believe God does not exist. I don't believe God exists. I lack a belief in God. It's an interesting question, since the belief in God is very common, in spite of seemingly no good evidence, and this belief guides many decisions.
a) I believe that Gluttony is bad for your health as expressed in obesity and diabetes. Medical facts, both will kill you if not treated or moderated. And so do the other deadly sins in their own way. b) Yes, Genesis is a statement of incorrect facts c) No, but science strives to. The current dispute about human industrial activities being at least partially causal to GW in spite of scientific consensus that it is, is but one example. Greed? I agree, but then why is there a concerted effort to introduce ID into school curricula as science and not as philosophy, where it belongs.
Well, there is this bit: Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Taken literally, it means that love for each other, and for God, is as equally important.
While I agree that theist and atheist alike, can indulge in superstition, why do you believe that theism IS superstition? Jan.
I don't know what you mean by seemingly good evidence. What would such evidence be like. Sounds a lot like you're saying 'God does not exist until I decide He does, to me. If that is the case you are effectively claiming that God does not exist, even if decided the the evidence was satisfactory. Jan.
