Is it best to cringe and hope blindly that not too much bad will happen or to try to pick out possible mishaps/catastrophes?

The first thing on my mind is a possible collapse of the stock market as it has gone up a lot and does anyone really have confidence in the new Administration to pursue policies that are good for the global economy in the medium (even short?) term?

The geo political outlook seems particularly uncertain even without this change of administration in the USA .

Alliances seem to be up for grabs and some kind of a game of musical chairs between Europe, USA,Russia ,China and the rest which could be badly mismanaged in the best of scenarios.

Is the power of West and democracy in general in decline now?

Edit: I am not forgetting climate change but hopefully the USA can be bypassed whilst the monkeys are behind the till.

back in 2000 I argued openly with highschool classmates that Bush would get us into useless wars, they laughed at me, Oh how right I was... but Trump, I have not fucking clue, he lacks any consistent principles or opinions, perhaps much of the world understands this and will walk on eggshells around him and we will survive, or perhaps not, not putting bets on anything.

As for western democracy, this is the best argument for what is happening now I have seen:

I guess you don't know the difference between crying and expressing legitimate concern. If using the White House toilet is what this is about, by all means let the man use the White House toilet. But you don't have to be the POTUS to use the White House toilet.

Believe it or not, they let people other than the POTUS use the toilet at the White House.

I have to agree, Trump is a big unknown, and that in and of itself should be deeply disturbing. We can only hope at this point.

The stock markets are betting on Trump's promises of fiscal profligacy and the breaking of congressional deadlock. The markets expect Trump will live up to his campaign promises and spend a trillion dollars on infrastructure and provide trillions of dollars in tax cuts. That's a huge fiscal stimulus. That's several-fold larger than Obama's stimulus package of 2009. It's huge to borrow a Trumpism. That's why the stock markets are rallying. Now if Trump fails to deliver, the stock markets will plummet. But it also presents Republicans with some challenges. For the last 8 years Republicans have been fiscal hawks: refusing to spend money even when it needed to be spent. Republicans even attempted to engineer debt default on multiple occasions.

And then, and perhaps the most distressing, is the international affairs component. I can easily see scenarios where Trump could get us in trade wars and some very hot wars as well; both would be devastating to the country and to the world at large. Even if those events never transpire, Trump could well damage long standing arrangements and permanently damage America's standing in the world.

I predict that Trump will abdicate. I don't know if t will occur before the inauguration, or within the next few months, but I predict it will happen.

I think no one is more surprised than he that he won; I think he is not actually interested in following through with the role; and I think he's realized it's going to directly interfere with his commercial empire.

He won't wait to fail; he will bail without showing the world how truly in-over-his-head he is. He will say he accomplished what he set out to do, which is "drain the swamp" and will rationalize that as his "win".

    This is my prediction.

    I sincerely hope not.

Pls be prepared for FBI screening on the Forum! BTW folks: You may be confusing 'automatic' weapons with 'semi-automatic' weapons - Google the difference . . . the former (automatic) are difficult to obtain/legally own/license and permit due to current "gun laws". Most semi-automatic weapons (sic, handguns & rifles) are still legal (so far!).

Serious possibility of the US federation breaking down. The saner states will either secede or quietly ignore orders from Washington and make their own arrangements, while the insane ones will celebrate - until the food runs out; the split ones will bog down in violent turf wars. Messes all around.

Also the whole floating global crap game is in crisis - from uncertainty, lack of coherent direction and the fresh crop of right-wingnuts that have been springing up in just about every country of every continent, each with his own little paranoid agenda and plenty of ammo, courtesy of Uncle Sam. (You do know they'll renege on the payments, right?)

Best case: impeachment on a major charge that even republicans can't ignore.
Worst case: the end of life on earth.
    Most likely case: lots of very bad shit for lots of people; some short-term windfalls for a few;
revolutions and civil wars; famine and drought; pandemic and flight; the decrease and relocation of human population in large numbers.
No possibility of a state of ``normalcy`.

Why? Is Trump going to order the FBI to screen Sciforum members? Is Trump going to takeaway our 1st Amendment rights? Trump has already demonstrated his hostility to the 1st Amendment and several other constitutional amendments. There's nothing new there. So I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Hell the man doesn't even know the Constitution as demonstrated by his many statements. He probably doesn't even know there are amendments to the Constitution.

And what has anyone written which would lead a reasoned person to conclude they are confusing automatic weapons with semiautomatic weapons? Please do be specific.

Semiautomatic weapons are legal. What isn't legal are some of the accouterments, e.g. magazines, bullets, and the concealment and transportation of weapons, etc. and the laws vary by state. What is legal in one state may not be legal in another.

I don't think you are far off there. They are all very real possibilities. Trump's daughter is moving to Washington to try to keep Daddy Trump under control. That's probably better than the alternative, but not by much. Trump's minders will play a huge roll in Trump's presidency, but they can only do so much.

It all revolves around Trump's popularity. He is the most unpopular president-elect we have ever witnessed. He's entering office with a 40% approval rating. That's unheard of. It's unprecedented. If Trump continues with his erratic behaviors, and I see no reason why he wouldn't, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him get his butt impeached even by a Republican Congress.

Trump's unwavering support of Putin is really perplexing. It's costing him a great deal of political capital. His pro Putin agenda has virtually no support in Congress and it's costing him a good deal of political capital. And it's not like Trump is loyal or something. Trump dumped Giuliani and Christie, his most vociferous and loyal supporters, in a heartbeat when they became political liabilities. Yet Trump clings to Putin. It's perplexing. One has to think there is more to Trump's Putin connection than meets the eye. Trump's son has said that Trump is deeply connected to Russia. His campaign advisers have had deep connections with Russian oligarchs. Trump's cabinet is stuffed with Putin friendlies. There is something more going on there. Trump may well be Nixon 2.0.

Even after all that has transpired Trump doesn't seem to get it. Something is going on there. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Republican Party fracture. We have already seen it fracture and heal. It kind of reminds me of a moon being torn apart by gravitational forces. It's a tug of war between gravity and Trump which may ultimately destroy the Republican Party.

The sky isn't falling. It just appears to, because the sea level is rising.

    PS
The republican party has already committed ritual public self-evisceration. It can't recover, and there is little point in re-inventing it.

PPS That guy Blyth is damn clever. I'm listening to him now.

    1) This, by DaveC: post #13 "But with automatic weapons." Evidently he does not know the difference - not many folks have automatic weapons. 2) Specifics: I refer you to my post re: semi-automatic vs automatic
