You're right. But therapy might help the drivers.

As it might help the cyclists too.

I think if you called one of these 1%er types a "cyclist", you might get your ass kicked.

It isn't the bicycle lanes that piss people off. It's the fact that almost NONE of the bicyclists use them. They regard the entire planet as their space, and anybody who dares to challenge them gets a finger.

It's illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk in most major cities, and guess where the bikers ride anyway?

This isn't a matter of inconvenience. It's a matter of SAFETY.

I love flippin off the fat-assed drivers that cross the line into my bike lane.

I ride wherever it's safer. Often that's the bike lane - but there are places where the sidewalk is just the safer choice.

For fun I skydive and fly small aircraft. And the most dangerous thing I do on a regular basis is bike to work.

Maybe safer for YOU, but bicycles turn sidewalks into nearly impenetrable routes for the pedestrians for whom the sidewalks are SUPPOSED TO BE FOR.

I do everything I can to block bikers on the sidewalk. Let them ride on the damn street, WITH ALL THE OTHER VEHICLES!

Sorry, my safety (and the safety of my kids) come first.
Might be a painful lesson for you. A driver out here who tried to "do everything he could to block bikers" is now serving five years in jail. He felt that bikers belonged on the sidewalk, not on the street.

If you expect bicycles to be like all the other vehicles, you need to stay the hell out of their lane - not just bike lanes, ANY lane. You're not allowed to pass all the other vehicles in their own lane.

At the cost of safety of the actual law-abiding citizens, who are rightfully trying to use that sidewalk to walk on.

You are why we can't have nice things.

Why are you making this a personal thing?

In Washington, DC, the cops are very aggressive about bicyclists riding on the sidewalk--after all, there's barely enough room for the pedestrians!

Unless I actually yank one of those pussies off his bike, throw him to the ground, stomp on him several times, then toss his damn contraption into the nearest trash bin, the cops won't even notice, although they might giggle a little.

Well, you can go that direction if you prefer - I generally prefer cooperation over violence.

I've been riding here to work for about 25 years, and during that time (covering about 50K miles) I've only had three collisions.

The first was car vs bike. A car got in front of me and jammed on his brakes. I hit his bumper and went onto his trunk, then rolled off into the road. He sped away. Fortunately the guy behind him stopped, and I managed to grab the bike and crawl to the curb. Even more fortunately I was within crawling distance of the clinic at work, who called in a doctor to get me patched up. This is almost exactly what the guy who got five years in prison did, but I wasn't hurt anywhere near as badly - and I am pretty sure it was just carelessness rather than maliciousness.

The second was car vs bike again. Light turned green, I started across the street and a guy who didn't stop for the light clipped me doing about 50mph. Fortunately he barely caught my _rear_ wheel. It knocked me about ten feet - but again people stopped for me. Just lost some skin on that one. Never got his plate number and (of course) he didn't stop.

The third was on a sidewalk in an area with no bike lane. One jogger on it coming towards me. I moved over as far as possible. He didn't - and actually started coming closer. I went onto the grass but still clipped him with a pannier. He went down yelling saying "stay in the street you #^@%$!" So he was like you, and basically got what he wanted - which was a collision. I continued on my way.

So outside of people like yourself, I haven't had any problems with pedestrians in the last 50K miles on a bike.

People get hostile toward bikes when they ride on the sidewalks and inconvenience pedestrians. People get hostile toward bikes when they ride in the street and inconvenience cars. The laws are written, and the infrastructure built, to favor the cars first, then the pedestrians, then buses and wheelchairs and horses and such - bikes last.

In a world of absurd laws, great personal risk, and hostile surroundings, bikes learn to rely primarily on their own judgment and behave according to the reality of their circumstances.

That's it. It's just an inconvenience for drivers of cars -- they are in no danger. And it's just an inconvenience for pedestrians -- they are in almost no danger.

(I couldn't find a single instance where a pedestrian was killed by a bicyclist. Injuries, sure. Some even needed medical attention. Now, I'm sure someone, somewhere was killed by a cyclist.)
