I have 2 pc's (desktop and notebook) both on Windows 7. What are the pluses and minuses of getting Windows 10?

The plus is that the free offering can be tried for circa a month and then uninstalled before that deadline if you don't like it. Reverting back to the former version of Windows with (supposedly) whatever software and documents were stored on it. [Check to be sure about the latter, though, as well as if any new stuff you added during the trial period will be kept]. Having enough spare memory to so retain and restore the original condition is surely a necessity, too.

EDIT: Never mind. Apparently different PC owners that are eligible for the free Win10 download may be receiving different details and claims about the trial period. Your original state on Win7 may not be restored if you decide not to keep Win10. And it could be a 90-day period for some instead of 31 days.

    I've updated to 10 from a desktop (Win7) and a notebook (8?) - nothing bad - everything faster/better or same.

After an £800 ($801) fraud I am of the opinion that Windows 10 is hacked by design. Trying to change a password without an Internet connection results in "There seems to be a problem - try again later."

The general sentiment (at least) has long been entertained by the conspiracy set. Or t'would not be a surprise to paranoid circles. To just touch one toe into a popular scene of its backdrop:

When support for Win-XP was finally phased-out in 2014, the Chinese government announced that it was refusing to update its computers to Win8 (having not gone much to Win7, beforehand, either). Their stated intent was that they would eventually shift instead to a couple of Linux-based OSs made in China, or develop their very own operating system.

Various reasons were given for not accepting Win8, ranging from too much expense to retaliation in the context of international politics. One reason left unsaid was that the Win8 software was less vulnerable to replicating and operating without a license (China had been one of the world's worst offenders at exploiting Win-XP in that regard); thus no more free ride.

Another potential reason kept out of the limelight revolved around rumours about Win8 having backdoors for the NSA, CIA, etc. If the latter was an underlying cause and more than China buying into fake news... Then doubtless Win10 would be another notch-up as a facilitator of and deliberately compromised feast for hacking by security agencies.

WIN 8 was Microsoft's attempt to make your pc look and act like a smell phone with all of those little shit-tabs that you don't actually use for anything except to clutter up the screen with MS trash. I have that on my laptop and pretty much hate it. (It is incapable of updating itself to 8.1. I quit trying after maybe 20 failures)

When the hard drive on my backup PC failed a whiles back, I installed WIN 10 on the new drive just to see if it was usable. Windows Defender is back with a roar - much more aggressive (and intrusive). MS believes this version is so.....'robust' that you won't need to purchase additional antivirus software. So far, they are right. WIN 10 constantly wants me to play with it so as to allow that PC to be able to hold hands with a shit-ton of other devices that I am not going to let it play with. It is more difficult to get to things like the control panel and the 'digital assistant' Alexa is about as much fun as that stupid paper clip was.

Also, MS pushes their 'new' browser at you constantly when you use another browser and the default browser is always theirs. Ask Alexa a question and you are immediately surfing the net on the MS browser.

EDIT: Oh yeah - and Skyrim SE won't run on WIN 10.

Isn't "Alexa" the Virtual Assistant embedded in Amazon Echo, Stoniphi?
I am fairly certain that the Microsoft Virtual Assistant in Win 10 is "Cortana", is it not?

You are quite right, of course. My bad...I got one stupid artifice mixed up with another. Concertina it is.

Uh.....I possess what is termed a "sense of humor" that I display on the open forums here with puns, plays on words, 'clever' remarks, sarcasm, belabouring the obvious and the like. (Google "sense of humor" for a more complete explanation if needed)

That remark falls under the category of "plays on words" and was intended to give other members a chuckle when read.

Of course, we all know that having to explain a simple joke pretty much ruins it for everyone........

    Concertina
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is about the musical instrument. For the coils of barbed wire named after this instrument, see Concertina wire. For the Tori Amos song, see Concertina (song).

    Wheatstone English concertina, circa 1920
    Other instrument
    Hornbostel–Sachs classification 412.132
    (Free-reed aerophone)
Inventor(s) Sir Charles Wheatstone, Carl Friedrich Uhlig
    Developed 1829, 1834
    Related instruments
    Accordion, harmonica, melodeon
A concertina is a free-reed musical instrument, like the various accordions and the harmonica. It has a bellows, and buttons typically on both ends of it. When pressed, the buttons travel in the same direction as the bellows, unlike accordion buttons, which travel perpendicularly to the bellows.

The concertina was developed in England and Germany, most likely independently. The English version was invented in 1829 by Sir Charles Wheatstone,[1] while Carl Friedrich Uhlig announced the German version five years later, in 1834. Various forms of concertina are used for classical music, for the traditional musics of Ireland, England, and South Africa, and for tango and polka music.

Windows 10 has no advantage. It lacks a realistic UI, it requires third party UI. Microsoft believes they can steer the OS towards a closed source type system where developers like Valve Steam, freeware, etc. cannot release anything without Microsoft's ok. Even then it must be sold through their ridiculous Microsoft Store so they get paid for it. I predict people will get so sick of their desire to corner the market in all things that Linux development will evolve and eventually devastate Microsoft. Or everyone switches to Apple

...which, of course, does not have a ridiculous store that you have to purchase all the apps through.

    Oh wait...

I bought a new laptop with win 10.
So far, I do not like it.
I much prefer this old computer with win 7.

Maybe it'll grow on me (like an unwanted fungus or pustule)?

I don't think Win 10 is inferior to Win 7 in any obvious way.

What don't you like about it?

Can you not click a button and get Win 10 to look and work just like previous versions? I.e. The "classic" look? Just with all the added stuff under the hood?

The only issue I have is that some older games do not run under Win 10 but did under Win 7.

I don't recall any problems with the win 10 interface v. win 7. Note past tense there

All my computers (6) are now either Ubuntu or Raspian (Debian on a $40 Raspberry Pi) and I have everything I need for a small office and very small business.

While in Japan I've been using a "Nextbook" featuring Windows 10.

This (ahem!) "operating system" ought to be prohibited by law.

First of all, you can't turn Cortana off. I've tried, and it still pops up to offer me useless bullshit.

Moreover, what the hell is with Microsoft's hatred of Unicode? I actually got into an argument with a friend employed in the tech sector, and it's actually quite funny because if anyone else talked about anything else that way, he would be entirely pissy about the arrogance of presumption. But he's in tech, so when he says, "But you don't need Unicode", he means it in the same way the tech sector tends to think it knows what people want or need, and if you want or need something the tech sector thinks you don't, you're wrong.

Windows 10 is shite. Microsoft is shite. The first purpose of Windows is to facilitate the needs of commerce. A user's actual needs are not necessarily on the list of purposes or priorities; that is to say, if one's needs happen to overlap with something Windows 10 does, one should feel lucky.

(Facebook, Wordpress ... it's not like Microsoft is unique in setting user priority to "fuck you". But they are Microsoft. Automattic's claim to power over a quarter of the internet notwithstanding, they're still following the MS lead. You know, just for instance.)

Bravo - my reaction as well. But I have at least managed to turn Cortana off.

My first presumption would be that it involves replacing Win10 with something useful.
