We should remember there is actually good news in the following paragraphs:

After facing backlash for killing a bill that would have added domestic violence to the list of legal reasons a person can get a divorce in Mississippi, state Rep. Andy Gipson (R-Braxton) has backtracked.

The Mississippi lawmaker introduced an amendment on Monday that would allow physical, emotional, verbal, sexual and financial abuse as grounds for divorce.

Gipson had earlier argued that victims of domestic violence were already covered under the existing grounds.

There are currently 12 grounds for divorce in the state, including adultery, drunkenness and impotence. Victims of domestic violence can petition for divorce on grounds of "habitual cruel and inhuman treatment"—but experts say it is difficult for victims to prove the abuse was "habitual," and someone else has to corroborate their claims.

The amended bill clarifies that only one instance of abuse is needed, and that the victim can testify as the sole witness.

And, yet, in a time such as this, with American cultural expression ... er ... ah ... with Americans at one another's throats like they've been ....

    • Okay, so, paragraphs three through five in the article quote evoke a cringe. To the other, I must remember that some people need these points explained to them; Rep. Gipson, for instance. I might wonder if the difference is significant: If the proposition is to close a gap in domestic violence laws leaving victims at comparatively severely elevated risk, then ...

    (a) ... oh, hey, yeah, we should probably close that up.

    (b) ... we don't need to close the gap because it's already closed, or doesn't exist, or ... er ... ah ... something.

It's almost an unfair distraction, but, damn it, while I'm glad someone was able to explain the problem to Rep. Gipson, the fact that he needed it explained in the first place just seems problematic. Some part of me wants to know the threshold: When is he supposed to have known better?

And it seems like an important question. But it also seems like it can be an ugly distraction. Meanwhile, hooray, Mississippi is catching up ... to ... what, the last quarter of the previous century?

I think this is why Democrats like the word "progressive"; because then, any progress can sound good.

    Everybody say thank you, Mississippi.

Australia threw out the guilty party aspect over thirty years ago.
You can petition if the marriage has broken down for at least twelve months.
I worked in the divorce courts for a short period.
There were bombings of judges and shootings and the authorities have only recently caught the main offender.
A bomb went off directly under where I sat I was on holidays but there was not much damage.
There were bomb scares as regular as every month.

Ironically I met my second wife at the court.

I wasn't under the impression that violence, domestic or otherwise, was endemic only to certain countries - wherever would you get an idea like that? Now Canada might be close, but Australia? Sh*t, even the plants want to kill you. Nice place to visit but I've never been beyond Sydney.

On the other matter developing here, I would get out the popcorn but I don't think it will last long enough...

Really on topic, domestic violence is everywhere, but in the western world it seems to be tied to money issues rather than culture.

But what do I know? I'm labeled as a conservative by some fuck who doesn't know one damned thing about me.

I was unfortunate to hit a gympie stinging plant with the back of my hand when I was ten years old.
It really stings but I didnt die even though I wished I would.

My Dad told me that folk would pour metho over the sting and set it alight for the reason they believed the fire would burn off the little stingers, fur like, probably the pain of the burning was less than sting from the plant... Myth busters should look into it.

Which leads me back on topic.
It is sad that in our country one lady per week is murdered by an ex.
It is a shame folk cant stay calm and not get so confused that they kill.
I have not studied all the common points, does alcohol feature, finances, role of children. This isa biggie. The bomber at the court... about kids.
I love cage fighting, any wife basher should be sentenced to cage fighting for ten years a d hopefully cops regular floggings.
We need a drug in the water supply even in foods so no one misses getting some, and this drug should keep folk sedated and calm and anger in the world is eliminated.

If such a drug were invented, tested and the efficacy demonstrated - all violence directed at a fellow human being was suppressed, with no adverse side effects - a certain political group in my country would vehemently oppose the distribution thereof. This is speculation on my part but I am confident it would be borne out...

Well, according to your conservative bud wellwisher, it's because women are such huge greedy consumers. Of course, men aren't materialistic and greedy themselves. We can see that with their drive to want more money and bigger homes, luxury cars, gambling etc. I guess if you are not spending money on handbags, makeup and skirts, then you are not materialistic. lol

It does make you question the stereotype of conservative logic and what you pick and choose to see. I mean, realistically, there are just as many men who can't handle their money or go bezerk and irresponsible when they have some and spending too much, wasteful etc. What's even worse about a lot of males is they blow money and sometimes have almost nothing to show for it as well as can't even remember what they spent it on etc.

It has to do with the personality of the person, not the gender.

It most ertainly is.. The woman is the one who sent the male crazy.
Or was it the other way about?
Generalisations are dangerous, case by case...
as you say or as I take it.. Judge the individual.
Anyways avoid hating them because they are different.

I think it would not be well received by anyone really. Thats why it will have to be done in secret.
And maybe a spraying of "The Calm" from space so every human becomes nice and placid.

Perhaps it would force us out from under our rocks to actually proclaim "I am for fucking someone up! We need more violence, not less!" - unmasking the pretense of actually caring about others...

Once had a friend who didn't believe that jumping cholla would jump off the plant and burrow into you. We ended up sitting near a cholla; he took a multitool and poked at it. "Doesn't seem that dangerous to me," he said. "That's a dumb urban legend." One of the branches then sprang off, made a 90 degree turn in the air and embedded itself in his leg. Fortunately we had the multitool to get it off.

That's insane - our prickly pears and other Florida cacti are tame and house broken.

We should stop though - we're completely devastating T's thread here...

    What is the OP about?
    Is it about,

    1. Domestic Violence which could be asexual?

    2. Sexual violence with wife only?

    3. Sexual violence with other family members?

And what is the word 'intimate' doing in between?
