Yap, we have just about every 10 years a war. That is why we have prosperity because we have war continuously.

The Allies certainly considered themselves morally superior to the Axis powers.
The Montreal Protocol originators certainly considered themselves smarter than all the people who claimed that there was no ozone hole, that it was all lies, that there was absolutely nothing wrong with CFC's.
The countries who created the ISS certainly consider themselves more capable than countries who could not orbit a space station.

So they all meet the definition of "holier than thou" - to certain other groups of people. You probably just don't belong to those groups.

In fact I read an interesting piece of news just today that shows the way the tide is running now: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-40106278

    Relevance to the Paris accord?

I see from today's news that China and the EU are about to announce a joint statement on the Paris accord, China having already vowed to keep on with implementation regardless of what the US does.

Trump is unwittingly making China look good. That's amazing. It's shocking.

Can States such as California break ranks with central government and effectively abide by the Paris accords?

Everyone can voluntarily abide by the accords. California has stricter environmental regulation and has had for decades.

Will Trump continue down this path of destruction? It's a good question. He's already badly beaten down. Withdrawing from the Paris Climate Accords would be stupid. But, hey, Trump is known for stupid. It's his hallmark.

There is a delicious irony in this: Trump has replaced the motto in the coat of arms, which originally read "Integritas" (integrity), with "Trump" !

Honestly, you couldn't make it up.

I'm going to tell my 89yr old historian father, when I see him in his nursing home tomorrow. He will roar with laughter.

He might have done better with Integritrump (In Trumpo (Dif)fidemus)

I had missed that fraudian slip

Yes the article wrongly calls it a "crest" but it is called a coat of arms. In heraldry a crest is the thing you sometimes see at the top of the coat of arms.

No "breaking ranks" required. States can do whatever they like with respect to emissions targets - and several states have done so.

Good in a way. Those states which "get it" can plough their own furrow and those with their heads stuck up Trump's "anus mirabilis" will come to see the error of their ways in due course no doubt.

Of course they will be freeloading and irresponsible but nothing is perfect.
