Stop asking me to login every page. Keep the info on YOUR servers. Second, I want to edit and delete MY posts. They are MY property. I own them. See copyright law. I retain the rights to my posts. You must afford me the ability to add, and additionally the ability to modify, and delete any and all material that I publish on your information system.

Are you finding you get logged out frequently?
I have been noticing this too. But it only ever happens on my office computer (which I only ever use to visit SciFo on breaks and lunch!)
    It never happens at home.

This is a glitch; it is not as-designed.

I think it's that each forum sets a cookie, so if you go to a new forum you have to sign in on that forum. It could be worse. I haven't tested it.

    Why no reply?
F2. The copyright in a member’s posts remains with the original author. By posting to sciforums, you give us permission to publish your posts anywhere on the site.
If you do not give me the ability to edit or delete my content, but you can republish it then you have effectively seized my content in violation of copyright. If a painter laid down one stroke of the brush, and you would not allow the artist to continue with the work, but instead took the work for your own, then you would be stealing an unfinished painting, and denying the artist the ability to complete the full work. The same thing applies to written content. You cannot put a grip on someone else's content without paying for it first, and the artist may decide either it's not finished, or not for sale.

No, this is not the case.
Sometimes I will be reading a thread, and reply to it, only to find out upon hitting Send that I have been logged out (like, within one minute) and have to re-login just to complete the Send. This is not a time-out situation; I mean literally, a minute or less later, I press Send and am logged out.

    This seems ... combative.

1] It's only been 16 hours since your OP. And this is a Feedback subforum, not a Support subforum.
    2] It's a glitch. Nobody's deliberately denying you anything.
3] Are you saying you are UNABLE to edit your content? I thought you were saying you were simply logged out, and had to re-login. If so, that is merely an inconvenience (if a big one); it doesn't prevent you from editing - meaning all the rest of what you said is a red herring.

Thanks for the response Dave. I am logged in, and can't edit or delete my posts. Why not? Is there a time limit? I'm posting, but have to take a call, or have something else to do. I come back and cannot edit or delete my post. But at the top of the feedback forum is the notice that mods can do whatever they want with my content. It means to me that my content has been seized for their use. Yes that's annoying - not combative.

I don't need support. Nothing is malfunctioning as far as I can tell - except as I said previously. Could be the policy that logins are only good for posting in one forum. I don't know. Not nearly annoying as not being able to edit or delete my content. Is there an edit/garbage can tool somewhere that I can't find?

Xmo1 - unfortunately, this all seems to be an artifact of the XenForo software... we changed hosts a little while back due to security issues and... well, it hasn't exactly been a smooth transition.

JamesR can provide more detail if you need, but suffice to say - having to log in all the time is not intended functionality.

It is also a standard expectation of posting content pubicly online.
I know many sites where you cannot edit your content after it has been posted.

And yes, anything you post here is theirs to use. You agreed to that when you signed up. (They don't use it; this is really a CYA clause to prevent people from declaring - after-the-fact - that stuff they posted publicly still belongs to them. Case in point.)

The way to not have your material made public in perpetuity, is to not post it publicly. And especially not explicitly waiving your rights of ownership to it.

I get that you're frustrated with the inconvenience of a software glitch, but you're kinda overstating your case here.

    Mod Note

There is a "Remember Me" or "Stay logged in box" you can tick that will keep you logged in and it will not ask you to log in on every page. I do not think this website saves passwords server side. Those things are usually saved locally on each device.

You should perhaps check to make sure that you are not automatically deleting and clearing all cache and cookies each time you close the browser window or open a new one. As that will clear the password as well.

This may also be a software fault with the program used to host this site.

Rest assured, it is not deliberate and we are not doing it on purpose to annoy members and new posters.

You have a limited time/window to edit your post once you have posted it. Once that time passes, the software prevents you from doing so. This is fairly standard fare on forums and anywhere you can add a comment, really.

As for your copyright. Certainly, your words are yours, but you have also voluntarily posted it on this website. In short, you have given us permission to host your words/views/opinions. Once it has been published on this website (and published with your permission and you published it yourself by posting here), you have a limited timeframe to edit your post. Once that expires, you can no longer edit it yourself. You do, however, have several options open to you. You can post again in the thread or discussion and point out that this is an edit or correction of what you had posted previously. Once that timeframe for edit has passed, you can speak to a moderator about editing your post or you can add an edit as a separate post.

If the issue is of a terribly error prone post that you feel desperately needs to be corrected, you can PM a moderator and ask them if they can please edit it and tell them what you wish to add/remove from the post and they may do it for you if the situation warrants it, or they may suggest you simply add your edit in as a separate post. That depends entirely on the moderator and the discussion in question. Personally, I prefer if people just add in their edit as a new post and I will only go back and edit people's posts if I have no other choice and the issue absolutely warrants it..

I haven't experienced that personally. It could be how your computer is configured when it comes to your browsing history. I set mine to be manually cleared instead of automatically cleared. You may have also set it that it clears the cache, etc, that can delete or not keep you saved on forums. Or perhaps you haven't ticked the 'remember me' or 'stay logged in' box when you log in or sign on to this site.

Because staff are not always able to respond immediately.

Like pretty much most sites that allow people to comment, such as forums or even news sites or blogs with an active comments section, you have a limited amount of time to edit what you post. Some news sites give members 10 minutes or so once they have posted their commentary, to edit. Once that time passes, they can no longer edit it. I think this place is a bit longer than that. But you do have a limited time frame to edit and once that expires, you can post a new post in the thread with your edit and if it is a really bad issue, you can PM a moderator and they will assess whether your post needs to be edited. That depends on the thread in question and the issue at hand at that given time.

You should be aware that you gave us permission to publish your work here when you signed up and posted said work on this site.

You should also be aware that if someone quotes you, for example, while posting on this site, or something you posted here is published in a different thread, not only must it be linked to its original source (ie, your post), you must also be credited with having written it in the first place. In other words, we are not going to be taking what you have posted and start splattering it around this site without acknowledging or referencing back to you and without attributing it to you as the author of those words. In short, you retain copyright over the content. But you have also granted us a license to use and publish what you post here when you signed up to join this site and agreed with the Terms of Service when you initially signed up.

As for paying for your posts, etc..

Again, when you signed up to this site and ticked that you agree with its terms and conditions, you also agreed that this site can host your words/opinions/posts if you post it here.

Here is the pertinent line in the Terms of Service that you agreed to when you signed up to this site and posted on it:

You are granting us with a non-exclusive, permanent, irrevocable, unlimited license to use, publish, or re-publish your Content in connection with the Service. You retain copyright over the Content.

If you did not agree with this, then you had the choice to not accept or join this site. By posting here, I am going to assume that you agreed with the ToS of this website.
