Uilleann pipes. The tune is old. The player is not. Classical minimalism apparently rose from percussion, piano, carillon. But it could have risen from this, imho.
The sitar sounds interesting, but I wouldn't know where to begin tuning one, much less understand how to play one.
John Fahey, among others less known, has adapted the raga form or approach to the guitar - / (the structural parallels with Shankar's performance there are audible, even the length if you combine Parts 1 and 2, missing of course the central drumming - something the guitar provides, as with the melodic variation, in ostensibly "simpler" form). He does use tunings specific to the compositions, as the sitar players do when playing ragas.
