Here's a picture of a carving on a stone. Please look at it carefully and post a description of what you see. It might help if you could rotate the picture 90 degrees right(perspective matters) Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
A fox in the top left? The man has a beard (and a pointy penis?) Can't make out his right arm/abdomen/shoulder area.
I see a woman. I don't know the history of the stone, whether it was partially exposed, causing the wear on the head area for instance, but it looks to me to be a pregnant or mature woman. Where was the stone? What is known about its history?
The thing is, that I was less than satisfied by the opinion of the archaeologist called in after the road crew found the stone. So I asked for alternate interpretations-------------eg: yours.
Yeh, looks like a woman to me also. (legs, buttocks, and back of neck) Stone was found during road construction at Kinross (between Edinburgh and Perth). This was within the ancient homeland of the Picts. I suspect that the curved line in front of the figure may be a bow--------- Pity I can't find better or more pictures of the item.
I think it's two goats violently fornicating with someone's mother as she ignores her child. I love Rorschach tests.
Well done for finding this. So now we know: a Pictish warrior from the first half millenium AD, with a large nose and a funny haircut.
Ah, so you too have had enough of experts, have you? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Very fashionable.
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smar...large-nosed-warrior-found-scotland-180967091/ (Google image search got me there) "Researchers are currently at work examining the stone. When they are through, the large-nosed carving will be placed in a museum for all to see." Edit I didn't see Bells'(same) link-thought it was just inexplicable blue highlighting.
That rather depends on just how much of an expert you think Mark Hall is. I always give credence to the opinions of experts when they coincide with mine. More pictures taken with controlled lighting, and using different filters could further our understanding of this item. Remember this is archaeology/anthropology ----not an exact science.
I doubt this snapshot was taken with the intent of it being used for serious study. It was a quick photo to post in a press release.
Don't be too certain of that. Especially in the publication end of the discipline, there is a tendency to parrot what someone else claimed without direct examination or much critical analysis. I have 5 words for that: Vere Gordon Childe and Göbekli Tepe ................................................... Don't go with what someone else has opined. Look carefully and go with what you personally see.
Because some details show up better under infrared, ultraviolet, etc. The Egyptologists have undercovered "lost" inscriptions on temples by take the same shot with various filters and light sources.
