even if it's not real, it is scary.

Why is this necessarily a ghost? It could be an Alien.

    I think it's most likely a fake.

do you think it's possible itself, despite whether this particular video is fake or not? is there any room in scientific knowledge of the universe up to this point to rule this out emphatically as totally impossible without a shadow of a doubt? can a glitch in the known laws of nature occur?

what makes this scary is not related to science. it's the idea that the mirror itself has absorbed some aspect of the girl's lifeforce (projection onto mirror being alive in some form) or a split which is why there is the one in the reflection (quasi or partial lifeform) and then her physical self on the other side.

to even add to that creep factor, the reflection in the mirror is looking at her sideways as if she is jealous.

the backstory makes it more intriguing as the girl had a twin in real life who died. and though there are parents who would exploit their kids, most parents wouldn't doctor up such a video of their child. but what's especially either distasteful or bizarre is why would a parent do such a thing if the twin of their child died? also, this video is from the early 80's before video editing software. it was not only presented on a show at the time but also the news.

    Of course not.

But it's kind of like saying 'that used car salesman has rooked literally uncountable schmucks into buying lemons. Is it possible that - this time - he's being an honest guy?'

Wouldn't your time be better spent looking for a used car salesman that have a reputation for honesty?

In my example, the salesman personifies an internet full of videos, with zero provenance as to their origin and veracity, and designed to grab attention. Because it really is littered with that.

If I wanted to find a meteorite fragment, I wouldn't look on a gravel road, picking up every rock that looked funny.

I'm not saying no; I'm simply saying why not concentrate one's desires for discovery on efforts* where one can avoid uncountable false positives for the sake of one possible true positive?
    * rigorous scientific analysis, as one example

All we can say is that no effect like this has ever been observed under controlled conditions. Videos like this usually have dubious origins and there is almost never appropriate verification that any of it is real.

One thing to think about: if what appears in this video was actually true, what else would have to be true?

In this case, if the image in the mirror is real, then it must have a physical cause of some kind. Reflections in mirrors are well-understood from the physics of light. If this is a mirror we're seeing in the video, then light is doing something very weird.

Suppose it's a ghost causing the image. What would it need to do? It would have to somehow directly control the light bouncing off the mirror to obscure the normal image and replace it with a different one. How could it do that? At first glance, it looks like there is no known way to do it given the conditions in the video. More generally, how could an insubstantial thing like a ghost affect anything in the material, substantial world? What would the mechanism be?

The simplest explanation here is that the video has been doctored. That doesn't require the need to posit the existence of unverified supernatural entities (ghosts); all it requires is that somebody had some editing skills and wanted to create a video to trick people.

Right. It's the idea that you find scary. You see the video and your mind is off and racing, thinking about spirits from the other world, dead twins and so on. You might like to think instead about how you would go about creating a video like this, if you wanted to do it. If you could do, in principle, then somebody else could too.

Even if the spirit world was real, why would an inanimate object like a mirror start absorbing life forces? What would cause that? What would it mean for a life force to be embedded in an inanimate object? What is a life force, anyway?

I mean, it all sounds very impressive when people start using big words and stuff, but if they don't actually mean anything then it's just an impressive-sounding story.

Here we have a second story: that the girl outside the mirror is somehow projecting her own image, or that of her twin (if she has one) into the mirror. Again, how would that work? What would the mechanism be? If kids can do this kind of thing, why don't we see it more often? etc. etc.

It's easy to read emotion into an expression, particularly when the footage is fuzzy. (By the way, the fuzziness of "ghost" videos and photos should set off alarm bells. A fuzzy image or video is easier to fake than a clear one.)

To get to the bottom of this, we need to investigate the origins of the story and the video itself. A few relevant questions:

Who says she had a twin who died?
    What's the girl's name?
    What do her parents say?
Who posted the video? Was it her parents or a stranger? If a stranger, how did they come by the video?
Who has verified that the video is real?
    Where is the original video?
Has the video been examined by experts to check for fakery?
Who can we contact to follow up on the details of the story of the girl and her dead twin?

If the trail goes dead at youtube, then the likelihood of fakery goes up.

This is why we need to know if the parents posted the video, or if the video was stolen by somebody else, who then edited and doctored it.

Where does this story of the dead twin come from? Who verified it?

How do you know when it is from? Who has the original?

Can we see the news report from back then? Or the show?

i can't verify it. these are all from third party sources but people who identify themselves as japanese or saw this on tv at the time. also, that she is now married with two children living a normal life.

out of all her answers, this one is probably the closest to true answer.

she also said something about not being able to see ghosts directly but only out of the corner of your eye. then that's probably your imagination because that happens a lot. that's just her experience because there are people who definitely have seen them full-on, in your face etc not just peripherally. how much of an expert can she be if that's all she's experienced? lol.

this is the problem when people assume to be experts on these types of subjects.

I've always found mirrors to be intriguing and a lot of weird questions pop up in my head. Because of the 3d effect, i can ask the existential question of who is the real one, me or the one on the other side/reflection?

Who can know for sure that reflection is not alive or does not exist in time, on some level or dimension?

it makes me wonder if we as well as our physical reality, even universe, is not a projection itself because we know on a quantum level that a version of reality can come into being or be shaped by attention/focus at that exact moment in time.

it is humbling to realize that, hypothetically, if there was a truly remote viewer, there would be no way to prove or distinguish one from the other from that viewer's perspective. that makes you question your own perception of reality and what is 'real'.

we consider ourselves to be the only version of reality and such things as reflections or possible quasi or more ephemeral concepts such as possible ghosts, even if proven to be real, would be interpreted as less "real", alive or valid as a lifeform than ourselves and our version of reality/makeup.

but taking yourself outside of this viewpoint entirely, you realize how fragile our existence is and how much of a contruct it is, you have to consider that there may be lifeforms that consider themselves to be 'more' real or valid lifeforms than us and we are more imaginary or paradoxically, less real due to our very physical makeup which we tout and consider the very definition of what is real above anything else.

what is considered and defined as real is dependent on one's vantage point. i find it intrigueing there is an inverse proportion when it comes to consciousness and matter. though the material is the physical, consciousness produced is abstract (not actually tangible) and that awareness we call 'reality'. then the concept of ghosts is even more abstract and ephemeral coinciding with the concept of spirit and soul, freer from the confines of a lower physical and more fragmented/narrow existence, so therefore perception.

can you die to become more alive? strange concept. though we assume the reverse.

are we the dead ones or the alive ones?

there are probably other things reflected in mirrors we can't see because our senses are limited to detect them.

this was someone's anecdote about her experience with huge mirrors on her bedroom wardrobe and it eerily stood out to me because i had the same experience at one place that i was renting a room ( a very nice place too). it had two very large mirrors on the sliding closet doors but i didnt' think anything of it, merely it would come in handy as i wouldn't need to go to the bathroom if i needed a mirror. i just felt very restless and as if my body chemistry was severely out of wack.

at this time, i became ill all of a sudden that i had to go to the emergency room a couple times but they couldn't really pinpoint anything specific, except they could tell my blood pressure was fluctuating and i was experiencing the worst cramps during that time of the month and unusual bleeding that couldn't be explained. it's also in my medical records, even bleeding at times that was not my time of the month.

i felt like a vortex was spinning in my room. after i moved, it completely and totally stopped and i felt 'rebalanced' again, like i stepped 'out' of something, into 'clear'. nothing of that sort or physical ailment since and no unusual patterns of blood pressure or bleeding either. i always thought that was very strange.

i have heard several accounts of people feeling more restless when there are large mirrors in their bedroom, maybe not exactly all extreme but there are some similarities, especially the more restlessness aspect than usual, as if there is excess energy in the room. the bedroom is not the place for huge floor to ceiling mirrors since that is a place of rest.

    coincidence? perhaps...but maybe not.

    lol

i find people's anecdotes very intriguing and sometimes a source of some fascinating info.

if you have two perfectly reflective material facing eachother, how is that not creating infinite parallel universes (layers)?

Do you ask yourself the same kinds of questions when you use a magnifying glass to make something look larger, or binoculars? Just like mirrors, these are imaging devices that manipulate light in clever ways, so that you see an altered image rather than the original object.

How do you know for sure that the image of a magnified ant in a magnified glass is not really a mega-ant that is actually alive, on some level or dimension? It's the same kind of effect we're looking at in both cases - image formation by an optical system of one sort or another.

See, my problem is this: what makes you think there are "probably other things reflected in mirrors we can't see"?

I mean, this is just pure guesswork, based on an overactive imagination, isn't it? You have precisely zero evidence that would lead to any suggestion that there are "other things" reflected in mirrors that you can't see. Or do you?

I'm not trying to make fun of you here, or anything. What you are engaged in here is what is often called "magical thinking". That is, you're just using your imagination to conjure up a world beyond what you can see. Now, it's possible that you're right, and mirrors actually are magical in some way. But, as I keep saying, there's zero actual evidence of that.
