I tried it out on the laptop and got barely a signal but it went off the charts in triangulating corners/walls but not next to doors. At times, strongly arms length away but it seems to move as i detect it so left, right, then behind etc. It also signaled off strongly in the middle of one clothes closet but not others.

    Anyone have explanations?

Those areas are probably where there are electric wires in the walls.

From what I read, the inexpensive EMF detectors are optimised to receive signals of 50-60Hz, i.e. that of the mains electricity supply. Detectors for frequencies differing much from that range are a lot more expensive. And for detecting DC fields, a different type of detector entirely is needed.

Conveniently for our ghost-seeking friends, it appears that yer average ghost emits an alternating field, somewhere around 50-60Hz, just like the generators in our power stations. How's that for coincidence?

well, i tried it again and it doesn't signal but the clothes closet still does. is a ghost hiding in my closet? lmao

Try again, with the entire mains power supply to your house switched off. My guess is you will get no signal.

why is nothing signaling off the laptop with all the wires, plugs etc? shouldn't it be picking up some electromagnetism?

that's really odd. it went to max directly by my left shoulder but nothing on my right.

i just can't decipher if it's an angel or the devil.

Not if the DC converter is away from the laptop. As I said before, a DC supply will not give a signal to most of the low cost detectors - they rely on a 50-60Hz AC signal.

Just turn off the whole supply to your house and try it. That is the way to check whether you are detecting stray fields from the electricity supply. Wondering about these other things can come later, once you know whether you are detecting regular electricity or something different.

I don't believe Birch will dare to do what I suggest.

Probably because she does not want to lose the magical feeling that the EMF detector can detect ghosts.

Wrong. i just can't because the power grid is tethered to several apartments and there is no fuse box i have access to. i definitely will when there is a power outage though and looking forward to it.

mr. fantasia, there was no magical feeling. it's called curiousity which means wanting to further investigation which further means i would welcome testing it out with no power. get it? also, i did not assume it was ghosts automatically just because the meter went off. if you believe all my posts and can't 'detectometer' facetiousness, you are the one who is gullible.

besides, i already know these things can pick up with no power as well because others tested it many more times than i have.

you skeptics don't actually understand our motives. you assume that we want to believe in ghosts. maybe some do. i am of the mind that there 'might' be.

but i would have just loooooved to have had a emf detector and go back in time to when i did have a paranormal experience though. i just don't have them anymore. so frustrating. ghosts are more clever than me.

Yep. And it turns out that American ghosts emit at 60Hz and British ghosts emit at 50Hz.

I can't comment on the individual app or whatever it is that you're using, birch, but I can say that the electromagnetic detectors typically used by ghost hunters and the like tend to be used on extremely sensitive ranges, so that they pick up just about any stray radio-frequency noise that is around. There's a lot of that kind of thing around, emitted by all kinds of electrical devices, power lines and the like, and more detectable from the atmosphere, from space and from various other natural effects.

It's kind of the same as tuning an ordinary radio to a "blank" station and listening to the static, or like tuning an (old) TV set with a rabbit-ears antenna to a static channel. Walk around the radio or TV, or wave your arms about, and the static can change. It's just noise and stray fields, nothing magical or mysterious.

i agree. these factors would make it difficult, if not impossible to pick up anything or discern anything from another. but it's true that i do wish that i could have had one when i had a paranormal experience just to see what would happen or have been able to record at the time but you can't predict these things.

Can't help about the past BUT I can help you, and anyone else interested, in setting up a genuine paranormal experience

Let me know if interested. Cost for the equipment might be about $20 and I'm sure all would be available at your local supermarket / mall and should take no longer than 1 day to set up in your own house

You could even invite friends over to show how you can produce the phenomenon

It can be done during the day time with everything available for inspection before and after the demonstration

No trickery involved although if you like to intrude a little drama you might like to do the procedure on your own and then work out how to ham it up

I would like to know more about this experience you are talking about.

Well as I said it doesn't take much

    Obtain a large jelly mould
    Jelly crystals
2 metres of thin insulated electrical wire
A few cheap naked multi meter displays

By now you should have worked it out what's going on

    Make the jelly
Large rabbit ones are good and skull ones for Halloween good
    Cut wire into 30cm lengths
Bare both ends - 1 to 2 cm
    One end in the jelly
Other end to the multi meter (some to one terminal some to the other)

You should see movement on the multi meter needle

If you are fortunate enough to have access to EEG equipment (as I was in the hospital I worked) you can produce a credible EEG which shows the jelly is alive enough doctors would be reluctant enough not to turn off its life support

To be truly sure you are picking up ghost EMF and not stray normal EMF (which is what this works on) you would need to be in a Faraday cage

    But that's another story

    Have fun
