Don't think they think of it like that, they are just spouting bluster, as they always do to try to show strength, but yes they would like to get a peace treaty and official end to the war. The problem though is they might not know what to do if they really did get peace, because jingoism is all they got, the need aggressors to misdirect how much of a shit-hole they are.

Hasn't it occurred to anyone that Trump is not really concerned about little North Korea. All his bluster is aimed [1] at so raising the tension in the area that Japan begins to create its own military strength instead of relying on US to defend it (which is happening). And [2] providing a pretext for parking more US defense assets in the area as a warning to China (which is happening).

Sort of true, though I doubt he is actually thinking about it, more like impulse that happens to line up that way. Japan was already rising their military, the Japanese president has been dreaming of scraping the constitutional limit on their military.

I'm sure the argument has been given to China that if they let North Korea go, then the USA would pull out of the region. But no one believes that will actually happen.

It is either 4 dimensional chess or moves so stupid that they appear to be genius, like drunk style martial arts.

In short we have never seen anyone this dumb before, their for it is novel and unpredictable.

    Speculation:
If NK makes it to the winter Olympics, China, Russia, South Korea and others will seek to have the sanctions imposed on NK immediately lifted or eased considerably. Especially humanitarian food aid.

If NK maintains a purely defensive posture against perceived threat of USA military invasion the UN will also call for easing of sanctions.
Trump has manged to reduce USA influence to such a degree, due to his bullying and extortionist approach, that he is going to have the USA standing in a global corner with a dunces cap on it's head for many years to come.

Trump is unbelievably stupid for someone so smart....

Now that Bannon has cracked it, this soap opera may come to a swift conclusion...

    Opinion:
A key difference between Trump and Kim is that Kim is quite prepared to die for his cause. The same could not be said for Trump.

he has repeatedly and consistently stated it...
To ensure his nation has a significant deterrent to USA invasion. He now has it..thanks to Trumps bullying tactics.

Most nations including Iran have a capacity to go nuke ( with in 6 months or so). All they need is an excuse. Trump behavior makes for a great excuse.
Trump would arguably be the greatest failure of international diplomacy in the history of the USA.

Yeah bullshit, his cause is to remain in power, his only wants to project the image that he is willing to die for his nation so as to blackmail the world into giving him legitimacy.

That because he is unbelievably stupid.

I wish but I suspect things will carry on game of thrones style.

Because of Trump's push to starve a nation of food and fuel, pre-ordered Nukes will be on NK's future sales list...

So... if the USA fails to fix their diplomatic efforts and starts genuine negotiations with NK, nuclear WMD's proliferation is inevitable....( if not already)
With Trump at the helm this "fix" is entirely unlikely.

If that was entirely true why then has he focused almost entirely on a deterrent to the USA and not the world generally?
Has he mentioned targeting Germany? France? UK? and so on...
    If not why not?

Seriously, I do not believe that Kim is currently prepared to export WMD's because that would threaten the world at large including China...
The sanction regime has failed and only promoted Kim's cause...

well ...whether we like it or not the fact is that Kim has secured his nation, as the cost of attacking NK ( first strike ) has, by now, increased dramatically and is increasing daily.
