what I found disappointing in the broadcasts, was that only the cheering crowd noise was heard, but not the pure sound of the launch. I lived within sight of that launch pad, and the sound of the mars launches near there, were of the top life experiences. the return of the boosters choked me with emotions. rocket science at its best.
Musk's goal to colonize Mars? Earth engineer it first. red, not blue sunsets please.

Saw a little bit of the car in space but it looked CGIis and seemed to be in orbit around Earth

My understanding was that the car was scheduled to orbit Mars

But perhaps it is just waiting for the right moment to be redirected there

If it does go to Mars I hope it is in a orbit suitable to been observed - if possible - by a Mars rover

    By Leah Crane

Whoomph. Standing nearly five kilometres from SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket as it took off for the first time, I felt like my lungs were exposed to the open air, the rushing sound and steam from the rocket’s engines squeezing my heart and making it beat off-kilter. People describe rocket engines as thunderous; despite the warm day and nearly cloudless sky, it was more like being inside the thundercloud
I realised I’d been crying – not because of the rocket’s importance or even because it was my first time seeing a rocket launch up close. It was because of the enormity of it all.
experience of the above writer for the "New Scientist Magazine" credit for the copyright to them.
You really have to be there to experience the enormity of it all, the power. the time delay. No shame for tears.

P.S Leah Crane: ":As the boosters landed beyond the horizon, two consecutive sonic booms shook me to my core again."
and that brings back memories, when on that fateful Saturday morning at 9am we did not hear the two sonic booms we should have heard from the returning Columbia Shuttle landing, but silence instead, It was gone during re-entry over Texas.

No it is already in its elliptical orbit that takes out beyond Mars: https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/961083704230674438

    Nice tribute to David Bowie.

When someone complains (and they will) about the Tesla payload you might remind them that "payload simulators", i.e. dummy payloads, are routinely used when testing a new system.

There are a few posters I could name for a dummy payload

And from other forums a few flat earthers

Hell I'd even call myself a dummy for a chance of a ride like that

Great view, but where is the rollover protection bar?. Convertibles, sun/moon roofs are terrible, freeze you in the winter, give you a sunburn in the summer. costly at the hair salon too. Surely they could have cobbled together a less ridiculous, less self promoting non-payload? Open it up for kids?
Deserved glory for Musk must have been enough to stand on its own? Mm--

In space no one can see you roll

Also space does not have a traditional up down orientation

I beg your pardon! "Up" is every way but down. Simple system.

Up, down, left, right are purely arbitrary directional indications

    They have no universal meaning

So? They have utility, that's sufficient.

Not really. Earth does not have a up or down
    Or left and right

Alice Springs is close enough to the middle of Australia

Darwin is North but most people say going up to Darwin. Adelaide is South but most people say going down to Adelaide

Brisbane is West of Alice Springs and Perth is East but most people say going across to Brisbane or Perth

Going left or right to Brisbane or Perth would depend on whether you were facing South or North in Alice Springs

But it would not matter which compass position you faced in Alice Springs you can still say going up to Darwin or down to Adelaide

Even though Darwin is not over your head or Adelaide under your feet

    Simple system really

    IFO (Identified Flying Object) spotted

Will the owner of the red sports car please remove it from its orbit immediately. It in violation of the International Space Station parking policy which states in part

Occupants of the International Space Station must leave their cars on Earth

While we understand you are not a occupant frankly we were not expecting visitors

    Your cooperation would be appreciated
