Well, for insurance purposes, my truck wasn't covered for vanishing into one of an infinite number of parallel universes.(It may have just even gone outside this universe but would take lots of effort to get it back.)

But hey, sucks to be me then.

"In insurance circles, an act of God is defined as any accident or event not influenced by man. They are accidents caused by nature. Hurricanes, floods, hail, tsunamis, wildfires, earthquakes and tornados are all considered acts of God."--- https://www.google.com/search?q=ins.....69i57j0l5.5424j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

It's only the most basic fundament of physics, so yes: it's right.

Not for sure, but it's unclear what an "open universe" would be open to? Suffice it to say, there's currently no reason to believe the universe is an open system (i.e. it's compatible with a closed one).

Ooh, you're talking about teleportation! That's not the same as things vanishing.

Yeah, like those 16 Seventh Day Adventists who got killed by lightning that hit their church.

"Atheists won the fight when Christians started puyting lightning rods on churches." Somebody.

I believe it is said the observable universe is a closed system. And I think that makes enough sense without some reference...

Jesus did steal my truck, though.

His family, including his wife. You can read the story by Googling ''Ambrose Bierce the difficulty of crossing a field''

How are the circumstances different from "Man apparently disappears into thin air."? What special criteria warrant the use of literal, in this circumstance?

Given that it is was published about 120 years ago, 30 years after it is reputed to have occurred (so even the grandchildren of those directly involved are likely to be deceased) I guess its because its more pragmatic to engage time and money searching for other missing things ... like one or two malaysian airplanes, for example.

But if all other internet mysteries and contemporary problems of the world were to miraculously disappear overnight, perhaps the first mysterious disappearance to investigate would be that of, Bierce, the author.

Because he was walking in a field. There was nothing there to occlude him from view. He was in plain sight and literally blinked out of existence, similar to how you have a model in a 3D program, select the model and hit 'delete' then it just disappears. If he just vanished as in he ran away and wasn't seen again, then this case would not be so mysterious.

Vanishing out of existence without a flash, sound or explosion would also violate several laws of physics on a macro scale. The witnesses did not report any sound, explosion or flash of light when he vanished. If the atoms in his body all suddenly turned into energy then they would have heard or seen something. But they didn't. He just popped out of existence right in front of their eyes, and in plain sight.

So how do you propose to investigate violations of the laws of physics, according to an anecdote of a 120 year old news article (of an event that occured 30 years prior to its publishing)?

Well, it was 120 years ago, when there was no video cameras or investigative equipment such as today.

There's lots of stories of people witnessing the same thing happen to objects, buildings, cars, and yes people this site -

    reddit.com/r/glitch_in_the_matrix

    Example - https://www.reddit.com/r/Glitch_in_the_Matrix/comments/4mqg9f/he_teleported_and_i_saw_it_happen/

A lot of them have multiple witnesses who saw it happen at the same time. The person, building etc didn't go behind anything. They were in plain view, didn't go behind anything or were occluded by a tree or object, they just ceased to exist and there was no sound or explosion or anything.

Actually it was 150 years. The news article was published 30 years after the event (120 years ago).

That last link is worth reading just so one can appreciate the top rated comment for the article.

"Honey, we need to talk. You know I love you, but I'm afraid that some of your quantum duplicates are assholes, and it's jeopardising the relationship."

Well, given that these appear to be violations of the laws of physics, as you have heard from third parties, how do you propose to investigate them?

OP, why do you believe the story as told. Do you think the story as told could be sexed up from the original story? If not, why not?

You don't know that. This is the claim you are trying to prove.

Good point. We don't know if this didn't actually happen on Mars.
