True story: I went to see the latest Star Wars with a group. The man sitting next to me I know is an avid pot smoker and was really stoned. He fell asleep midway through the movie (it was also his second viewing of it). The woman sitting behind him does whatever is in her crack pipe. I don't know if she was up or coming down but she was really agitated and fidgety. Occasionally kicking the back of the mans seat and ended up leaving the movie theater half way through...

Now I'm thinking smuggling some brownies into a theater with or without marijuana? Anyway, no one should have to do much research to find out marijuana is pretty harmless. Especially when compared to other drugs.

And no, lol I'm not addicted to either of them, brownies that is.

Was he, by Jove? Thanks, I did not know that.

Nor that cocaine is said to make sex more pleasurable. (Thank God I didn't know that when I was sexually active, or it might have led to the little head doing the thinking for the big head to an even greater degree!)

I always thought the conventional explanation for Freud's focus on sex and sexual hangups was his time and place, viz. c.19th Vienna, in that during that era there was a lot of suppression of sexual feelings. But you may be onto something.

I think that is a good point and I'm glad to see someone with experience of the emergency services chip in.

It seems to me the social contract provides us with emergency services on the implicit basis that we do not waste their resources, energy and psychological resilience by taking silly risks habitually. Climbing the odd mountain in bad weather is one thing. Driving every day without taking an obvious safety precaution, that causes the individual no inconvenience at all, is something else.

I can't fish up some exact reference for the cocaine. It could've been part of dreams description from a past event.

I believe, Freud, got most of his insight from dreams, his and of his patients. He does indicate that invention of psychoanalysis is credit of, Josef Breur, for using hypnosis to get repressed memories closer to consciousness. But eventually found that dreams were better than using hypnosis for that.

There is a criticism of Freud that he wrote little or nothing about how sexual abuse affects children. Possibly, I thought: sure you can write about sexuality in broad, general terms that offends people, but disgust and horrify is not viable.

On the topic of drugs, along with disgust and horrify, I came across a forum with a post specifically about sex on crack. Which I could barely skim through and would not share with this forum cause it was that bad. Like, you don't have to have childhood trauma to get a neurosis, you can just do enough crack when you're older.

I'd have thought it unfair to criticise Freud for not writing about sexual abuse of children, unless we know he came across a lot of it and suppressed it. Do we know that?

I do think there is a rather silly tendency today to "read history backwards", applying today's hot-button sensitivities to people living at a different time, with different culture and different information available to them.

I've never tried to work the numbers before. However, if this is true:
It's quite likely, Freud, knew a lot. But he also had to find a Greek tragedy to name the Oedipus complex after:

And 1899 is over a century ago.

Indeed. And a fair amount of what we now call sexual abuse would not have been called that in his day. Even today, the age of consent varies between countries, after all. And even in my youth, a slightly coercive attitude towards persuading someone to have sex was culturally tolerated. You only have to watch early James Bond films to see that.

pfft. does anyone ever consider that freud wasn't correct about everything? everyone's personality and psychosocial patterning is different, even from birth.

Yes Birch, of course they do.

This discussion is not about whether Freud's ideas are sound science or not (in my view they are not, though they do contain some insights), it is a speculation about his cocaine use and his preoccupation with sex in human psychology.

Whether you like Freud or not, he is still regarded as one of the most influential figures in psychology. (B. F. Skinner regarded as most influential.)

Cocaine hinders the brains normal ability of purging dopamine and sex produces loads of it so it stays triggered. Sex, in broad sense, is also a key factor in many neuroses and human motivations.

thats quite tricky because it also has a happy effect.
because the happy effect has deminishing returns quite quickly over repeated doses it tends to render an addictive process to those whom are addicted by it(vast majority).
it would be extremely beneficial as a cold & flu medication if controlled extremely tightly.
however, the person would likely feel a cold turkey effect as they got over the cold or flu, along with the appetite supresion aspect which would potentialy make them eat less resulting in them actually getting sicker.
furthermore and more soo quite poignantly, the use of it is also an escapism from real emotional issues, thus its very strong addictive property for those with unresolved emotional issues(most people as an ongoing process of learning to work through emotional issues and advancing in EQ).

ideally it wouold be great to be able to have it clinically administered free of charge to elderly patients whom were willing to use it, though... i am not sure of the potential deminishing returns of the adrenal system resulting in a shortening of life expectancy for such people.
not to mention the increased heart rate which directly reduces life expectancy.
p.s it would be great to see all the seazed drugs being given free of charge to low income poor sick patients instead of burnt...
note the government doesnt burn cash that is seazed from illegal gains.

That's an awful idea. It's bad for you. People with heart problems would die fast. The drug you want for old people is heroin. Pain relief and peacefulness. Not powerful CNS stimulants.

Just to get some chemistry back into the thread, this simple molecule exists in 2 optical isomers (enantiomers), due to the asymmetrical N atom. The D form is far more potent as a drug than the L form, apparently. I wonder whether drug dealers have a way to separate the two, or whether they simply supply a racemic mixture to the punters.

I'm not sure I can add much. My subject was chemistry rather than pharmacology.

Cocaine used to be used by Dentists due to it's numbing effect. Now they use Novacaine. Anything's better than Whine.
