So. are we left with a G6
    or
Should the thing be scrapped or expanded?
    What purpose does it serve?
    What purpose did it serve?

How will the latest discord effect world markets?

I watched some interviews about it this morning, on both sides.

It seems as if Trump looked for and found a scapegoat in Trudeau - someone he could 'rough up' in an effort to demonstrate to NK that he's not to be trifled with.
The summit was simply the stage he used to act it out.

Trump pretty much laid out his plan in bits and pieces over the last week or two.
He's talked about how he doesn't need to prepare for the meeting with NK, it's all about attitude.
He's said he's preoccupied with this meeting with NK, and thinks the G7 should stand behind him, and not show weakness.

So, I think this is a schoolyard bully show.

Now, I don't know whether, once it's served its purpose, Trump will play nice-nice with Canada again. We'll see.

What gobsmacks me is the way Trump sucks up to Russia. He wants them to rejoin the summit.

Canada has 30 times more trade with US than Russia does, and runs a surplus. Yet Trump will happily smack that in the face for Russia's 1/30 trade dollar, with a deficit.

As someone said: which country does Trump serve?

    Who's "we"?
They may have a different idea of showing weakness. They may also have different interests with regard to Iran, NK, Japan, and China - and a perfect opportunity to cut their own deals.

I think one has to evaluate the utility of these gatherings in ways that are less superficial than stock market responses.
The great lesson of the First World War and of the two nuclear missile crises of the cold war is that failure to understand the mindset of other nations is very dangerous. Forums like the G7 and the UN serve a valuable purpose in enabling nations to gauge what is going on in the minds of rivals. The G7 used also to be a forum in which the major industrialised democracies could show a degree of common purpose in helping to shape the world according to the principles they shared.

Trump, evidently, has no use for this and admires autocratic strongmen far more than democratic leaders. So we are down to G6 until he is removed from office.

Hopefully by 2020 enough voters in the US will realize how bad Trump is for the country and vote him out. Meanwhile the next congress should have enough Democrats to slow him down. The rest of the world will have to wait him out.

Yeah, I remember saying the exact same thing about Dubyah 16 years ago.
Ah, but I was a younger foolisher man then.

My long fall into despair for the world:

    2000 Bush elected.
    2004 Bush re-elected.
2005 Brad Pitt dumps Jennifer Aniston.
2010 TCSM (Toronto's Crack-Smoking Mayor) Rob Ford elected.
    2017 Trump elected.
2018 Toronto's former crack-smoking mayor's brother Doug elected Premiere of Ontario.

And this is why I'm glad I'm not immortal.

I thought G7 existed because Europe wanted to confront America. And that's why America threw Canada in the way because they... not liked?

well before Trump, i guess you could picture FN - WTO being kinda the Boardoffice and "Big picture ideas." , were as G6-8 always until now was the place things moving. G6 alone contains more than 1/3 of the GNP of the WORLD:..... Russia in G8 has never been about them being the 8th trade power of the world, more a political idea to compliment their evolution under Big Boris, what Putin has bacily train wrecked by now. I still honestly think that Gorbatjov ( or how ever its written.) its one of the most clear sighted leaders Russia has ever had, and Boris built on his work... for a while there it was actually looking like actual democratic progress...now russia is democratic recess.

If US stands alone in trade, and dosnt work with the G6 nations, its gonna cost 100000's of workers their jobs on both sides....

Trump has one fair point and that is, us/eu trade tariff std. is 3/2 and that should be 2/2.

It was originally G7. Russia was admitted in 1998, after the G7 had been running for about 20 years.

Just remember, though - G6 would still have a stronger and more potent combined economy than the US... especially as we continue to sever our ties with allies and further isolate ourselves.

If the goal is equality of open market access, is the US not at a disadvantage by not having a v.a.t?

Or does this only apply to imports from countries who strip away the v.a.t. on exports?

The Republican Party: Congress and Court and Commander in Chief, and the folks who voted for them the past forty years.

"We" seems reasonable. It's not like anybody didn't know, like anything was hidden from them.

Well, Trump is making alliances with his new master (Putin) and is making overtures to dictators he favors (Kim, Jinping, Duterte, el-Sissi, Erdogan.) So perhaps soon we can have our own axis of evil to trade with.

I don't know, what's the disadvantage of throwing away relationships with our closest allies while rewarding aggressive expansionism by our rivals?

Is stripping VATs for export purposes a subsidy?

I think Trump does forign politic according to what ever serves him getting the most votes from his core voters, and apparantly Trump thinks current actions do.

and what % of the G7 economy is being generated in india & china ?
i am not entirely sure the centre is about size of economy as much as collective future goal manifesting combined means to the ends.
China has always been independant and stood off from global macinations in the current modern century.
yet... looking at india & china combined they represent an economically substantial proportion of the G7 economic machine.

thus if india & china shut down its movement of money & products to all other countrys the global economy would be thrown into chaos(the litmus test of independant trade).
    euphemistically speaking...
    india has a space program
    china has a space program
equally all the G7 countrys share a space program

human nature likes to have humans interacting human to human even if technology allows cheaper faster disconnection.
putting all the conspiracy rhetoric aside, the G7 could be played as a human metaphour of projective development.
nationalistic iconography is core to many cultures.
