We should shoot tornado's, and other life threatening energies with howitzers and rockets with weather augmenting special multi-deployable warheads. We can divert weather for our own use. We can move heat, water, and oxygen. It's just a resource (an energy resource).

Why would you want to augment a life-threatening phenomenon. Are you sadistic?

We already do that. For example, wind generators, solar panels, hydroelectric power, the list goes on.

Contraptions for harnessing the power of tornadoes and hurricanes have been proposed.

Tornadoes are elusive. They come and go rapidly, and cover an extremely small area when they do. There is just no practical way to put a device in the path of a tornado. Even if you peppered the land with devices - like a wind farm - you'd be extremely lucky to get a hit from one. The other hundred of devices would sit idle, collecting dust. And if one did get hit, it would only be functional for a couple of minutes.

Hurricanes are far to large to deal with. You still end up with a wind farm, and all of them might get hit, but again, that'll happen just a few times a year.

Plain ol wind, on the other hand, is a steady source of energy, and it's ubiquitous. That makes wind farm cost-efficient, and that's why we have them.

    Uh...

I don't have a comment but I got this from a political discussion.

Of course, intentionally. You didn't quote me when i said "Want crazy?"

I'd hoped that would help set the tone for this ridiculous thread, but whatever...

Here's a simple example: If you cut a tornado funnel half way between the top and bottom it will dissipate. Using any material, be it Mylar, plastic sheet (think trash bags), aluminum foil the funnel will return to the clouds. Pull a sheet with a rocket on either side through the funnel, and it's gone. Where are the experiments? What is happening to date, with every event, is to watch it do it's work and then clean up. That is a lack of will, determination, innovation, and investment. I don't know if the rocketry would work, but do something other than just watching them do damage ...

Hurricanes and other things. I don't think anyone is even trying to stop this stuff - figuring that's it good for (someone's) business maybe. Saying it's too big is capitulation. I KNOW people have the intelligence, and resources to be more aggressive against mother nature. Capitulation is what kids do. Adults persevere, solve the problem, or die trying.

The answers might surprise people. Suppose it's found out that all you have to do is spray a hurricane with cold salt water. Who knows? Used to be you couldn't fly a plane through a hurricane. Now there are satellites. Things change, but the problems are still there. Why are there so many cities without plentiful access to clean water? There are floods all over the country every year. Those millions of gallons of water could be used in potable water systems, rather than letting it all flow into the ocean and get contaminated.

BTW: Could we give the trolls a cookie?

One reason is that the rivers have been dammed again and again, to irrigate naturally arid farmlands, until they're down to trickle by the time they reach the city.
Couple of problems. You'd need some pretty extensive pipeline to get the water from where the floods are to where it's dry - and then you'd need a massive funnel, at just the right spot, to direct the water into the pipeline. Of course, first, you'd have to guess where the flooding and drought will be.
The other problem: most of it is contaminated long before it gets to the ocean - or the city.

    • What do tornadoes - with their 250mph winds - do to houses made of brick? What you you think tornadoes - with their 250mph winds - will do to your mylar garbage bag? Do you think it will even notice it?
    • What do you think it will do to a garbage bag whose surface area spans a quarter square mile of countryside?
    • What kind of forces do you think those rockets will experience when a 250mph wind gets hold of a quarter square mile of plastic sail?
The sheer scale of energy involved is far larger than you are conceiving of. More to the point, it is far larger than we can harness.

Why do hobbits build underground? I've studied sustainable passive solar houses since the late '70s. No one gets it but the hippies, everyone else is watching Corning commercials with the cartoon character...

I bet if you got 1 x 10^4 airplanes carrying about about 1 x 10^9 kg of cold water and they all converged on a hurricane at the same time and sprayed the water at the same time the hurricane would dissipate! Why hasn't this been tried?

Or build a really big vacuum cleaner and suck up the hurricane and then let it out over Antarctica! The cold air would cause the hurricane to dissipate.
I don't know, maybe Anita Brain?
    And computers!!!
Boy, that is weird, isn't it!
Probably because there is not enough water.
Great idea. Let's say there is a drought in California and a flood in New Orleans, we could real quickly dig a tunnel that goes under the rock mountains and send the water to California, easy-peasy! Or better yet there is a whole ocean along California, we could just take the salt out of the ocean water and 'presto' fresh water for everyone. Simple as pie.

    mathamatics looks good on paper.

delivering a payload to anywhere in the continent of the united states within a couple of square meters or less with enough explosive force to destroy a family home or city block, is quite difficult.

the actual time span of the event is generally very short.
the only type of device that could deliver energy quickly to a tornado that is currently moving would be a geo-synchronous satalite with a very very powerful laser.

the amount of power required would be HUGE.
but.... you could deliver massive heat to a specific spot which would collapse the wall of the tornado to stop it.
however, it would burn a hole through anything that was in the path, be those large or small planes buildings cars power lines, main underground power & internet supplys, gas lines etc etc...

the basic newtonian process or manipulating the energy is sound. the actual surrounding effects of making it a better possible outcome than not doing anything is very difficult.

they may be miss understanding the results of trials of dumping energy into tornados to over weight their energy gain.
moisture/precipitation removal or overload has been proven to change clouds & fronts and mathamaticaly could work on tornados.

example, how many tornado chasers get close enough to a tornado to fire a howitzer into the centre & hit it every time(less than 1% of all damaging tornados?).
you want tornado chasers driving around firing howitzers over your kids playing in the back yard ?

That's actually a very good point.

As Hypocrates said "First do no harm."
Any solution with enough energy to directly affect a tornado is going to require a catastrophic amount of energy. Last thing you want is to kill more people than you hoped to save.
