Bears will learn to make fire before dogs do. Does that mean some animals are more equal (to the task) than others?

But I digress. I have a dog and two little heathens to watch before the sun sets. I must say, the woman is good: She's cajoled without using a word, and manipulated me with some sleight of hand, so now I'm a freaking granddad? In-law, sort of?

I have an ebook whose title is named after one of its short stories, called "Bears Discover Fire".

Some sci-fi author wrote a post-apocalyptic thing that took that on. A human traveler saw firelight from the median strip of a dead freeway, and thought he'd found friends.

Nope. The bears were having Chicago-style dogs.

I forget who wrote it. And where did the bears get sport peppers? Really.

Round the camp fire were sat
    Fourteen bandits who were flat
    Out telling stories of deeds
    While field women sowed seeds
Make what of you will of that

    A generation ago, on
The creationist asks, "Do you want to be related to monkeys?"

I reply, "They're probably not thrilled about being related to you either."

A little aside. I always have wondered why blacks get upset when compared to apes. I would respond that all people black and white alike are apes .
There is NO shame in being related to other hominids. It's a religious ploy to make one feel inferior.

Well, it's being singled out that's offensive.

Apparently Hitler believed that Jews were descended from apes but Aryans were specially created by God. Unfortunately for him, sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference. (Ever see Rutger Hauer in Escape From Sobibor?)

My ancestors come form the part of eastern Europe (East Prussia, Ukraine) where a lot of Jews were known to hang out but there is no (known) Jewish blood in our ancestry. I mean in our veins; there may well be some on our hands. I wonder if some parts of the family tree have been deliberately pruned.

    There it is!
OTOH, I also think it is hubris when one group believes they are "the chosen ones".

I am glad you and your brother get along despite the distance. I am sorry to hear you do not get along with your sister. I have always wondered what it would be like to have a brother or sister. Some siblings get along and others do not.

No excuses, but our family line includes Irish, Austrian, English and French. with a smattering of others, of course. Most notably someone the family tree says very little about. She was either Cherokee or Choctaw, but who knows, and who cares a hundred years later?

Have a good evening! I've not felt well all day, so I'll go to bed soon..

I was born in the United States so I am an American. My European ancestry includes German, Irish, Polish, and Russian. I did some research on a few surnames in my family and I discovered I may have Roman, French, English, Dutch, and Swiss ancestry too. My religious identity is Roman Catholic.

My family always hailed from Ireland. My wife's always hailed from Italy.

Doing some ancestry research, it turns out she may actually be more Irish than I am. And I may have more Italian* in me than she does.
    *OK, Sicilian.
