So I ran out of coffee yesterday. I slept forever this morning and have had a headache all day. Thank goodness my wife bought some coffee this evening. I'm having my first cup now and am feeling pretty good.

I ran out of beer tonight. Head is fine, but I'm sure not watching the news! Better get some tomorrow.

I suck down about 12 cups a day. It's almost like smoking. I'm not sure what I get from it.

    1] Coffee is a diuretic.
2] Headaches (including hangovers) are very often caused simply by dehydration.

The water in coffee tends to mitigate the diuretic effect, but when you stopped drinking coffee, it still acted to purge your body of water - and you probably didn't make up for it by drinking more fluids.

Next time you go off coffee, try drinking more water - like a whole glass.

Since the day I discovered this, I've never had another hangover. If you drink, say, in the evening, have a full glass of water (not a half glass), before bed. You'll be fine in the morning.

I'm not sure I feel any better. When I was younger, it did give me a buzz. It seems more of a ritual now.

instant coffee or perked coffee beans ?
or sachettes of the pre-mixer instant coffee & other crap ?(one or 2 of these a day i think would not be excessive to kidney function)

    im guessing instant

best is (just coffee & boiled water no fine powder or other stuff that clogs up your stomach vitamin & mineral absorbtion or kidneys)

it is a bit more expensive when you measure it against total volume.
however, you swap out every 2nd cup for water because the buzz from the real coffee lasts longer & doesnt give you a crash withdrawal.|
$5.00 packet of plunger grind coffee will last you 4 to 6 days & cut your total coffee volume intake by 60%
you swap out the other 60% with water(or a mix of real fruit juices and water with a sipping bottle to back off your hand to mouth addictive reflex) which flushes your stomach & kidneys.
you will find you have more mental staying power and able to have more long term energy.
the junky effect of high volume instant coffee is quite a negative mental drain and lends well to those who are below 30 years old and spend lots of money on cocaine.
and thats probably the only free dietary(intellectual biochemical) advice i will ever give.

Other than the headache I mentioned earlier, I can function fine without it. It seems more of a habitual activity.

I use to grind my own beans back when I had access to free coffee. That in itself is ritual, like rolling a joint before smoking it.

I dearly enjoy starting the day with 3 cups of coffee from fresh - ground mocha - java beans I get fresh roasted from a Peet's subscription.

If I were to not have any coffee, I may get a headache as I did many years ago when I did that. The last time was in hospital and the surgery hurt so bad that I wouldn't have noticed a silly little headache if I had had one then. Might have, for all I know.....

But then, I also have the same job I did 51 years ago and the same schedule for the last 40 years.

Caffeine is still a drug, albeit a mild one. I realized in College one day that I had gained a hundred pounds, in large part because I was drinking Mountain Dew by the CASE (a 24 pack twice a week or so)... I just always had a can in hand when sitting at my computer while gaming, doing programming work, etc.

I quit drinking it outright... and two days later, I was begging for death the migraines were so bad.

I spent several weeks slowly weaning myself off the caffeine. Now, it actually has an effect on me when I drink it, and I limit myself to, at most, one or two caffeinated beverages a day.

i think you have it there in part "ritual".
while good coffee is a strong useful drug, bad coffee is a nasty mercyless slave driver.

i do not drink instant coffee.
after some years of fascination i found instant coffee to be a quick up and a fast down.
like spiked crack, spiked with ethanol or such like.
    its just not worth it.

as the drugs strength and quality fades, other drugs become normalised and included into normalcy.
suger, chocolate, biscuits, fats(like creams) things that fire up metabolic drug effects and have connective associations to brain chemistry(dopamines etc).
    even alcahol and nicotine.

after many years of testing on myself i find that the best option is to seperate out the drug from any other drugs.
e.g stop eating suger and keep drinking only good quality coffee for instance.

only eat a single measured amount of some type of associated compound like biscuits/chocolate etc.

space out the time between drinking the coffee and eating the biscuit or having the cigarette.

this process allows your brain to do 2 things
1 differentiate the drug effects on the conscious mind
2 seperate the drug effects from compounding giving a better and clearer effect allowing the brain to dissasociate from the addiction process.

having trialed myself through opiod addiction(from being prescribed pain medication for migraines and a few other issues over the years) i do not like it.
thus i will always disrupt the opiod addictive process consciousely to prevent addiction as a cnscious process of control.

unlike speed, opiods, cocaine, amphetamines diazapans etc... coffee is a very good anti-oxidant.
it has a speed quality to it that many ignorant and uneducated people decry as some type of looming demon, which is quite funny really.
it is a natural diuretic , a cognitive and metabolic speed that in its top quality form of beverage not overtly taxing to the organs.
when matched with milk of cream it balances the gut(on an empty stomach) to absorb the speed to help disrupt food cravings

i think the number of coffees your having per day is a sign of something else going on.
maybe you need to find something to stick your mind into.
maybe you need a better quality or alternating form of pain medication(i dont know what your dealing with obviousely so im postulating).

that said, as above i have posted to show you i am not a stranger to the more complex natures of what things do what, and from what perspective my comprehension comes.

additionaly for those on pain medications for long term pain.coffee is a good accelerator. it brings on the pain meds faster and gives a slightly higher vibrational frequency.
unfortunately it also shortens the length of the pain medication and the accelerated vibration can meline to pain frequency modulation to normalise pain threshholds at higher levels, in advertantly higher your normalised pain threshhold with an accelerator which in turn cascades the normalised pain as a feed back loop to neural discordance.

which makes it good for migraines, period pains and other such cyclical short term pain issues.
long term however, it complicates things.
consequently because of the bodys acclimatisation to all drugs(coffee being one of them) an alternting pattern should be adopted in conjunction with a doctors advice.

i suspect that the pain from coffee withdrawl may be found, as science continues, to discover it is also similar in mechanism to migraine-processes and causes/pathology. this will lead to better pain medication and probably better outcomes for brain and some other surgeries.

interestingly enough, the alternate now swapped for pseudoephedrine is a dilation mechanism, phenylephrine(caffeine being a constrictor?)
considering the fringe understandings of migraine pain and brain chemsitry and this phenylephrine being used it may signal a slight but substantial change.
i am not an anti-pseudoephedrine nut case though. all tools have their uses, but all fools can break things with tools.
note i am aware of the violent psychosis that usualy results from speed/ pseudoephedrine addiction. it destabalises the ego & supplants the ID into a mode of cognitive normalcy for Ego as the bttom line of self actualisation (being already undermined) is twisted to meet the needs of the addictive process rather than meet the whims of creative fancy.
this makes pseudoephedrine/speed/crack like a loaded gun to a child when given to someone with sociopathic behavioural tendencys(matched with destabalised self image issues and insecuraties etc).

    A shorter life expectancy.
12 cups cant be good for you.
You seem like you have a need for continual rewards ..the hit from smokes and coffee you seem to need...have you thought of heroin and perhaps some cocain...all drugs you know.

i would suggest a larger cup for coffee and making it more expensive as a better quality while engaging in a brain game that taxes speed of mind and math skill or reading on something that absorbs the mind and removes common associations to time passing.
the tweeking habit of instant coffees and cigarettes takes concerted effort to withdrawl from.
a change in stomach acidity level to change the stomach bacteria would be highly advisable also. this will give longer medium energy that will remove cravings.
