If humans were immortal except for accidental death or disease, might it lead to extinctions? A very low birth rate might not make up for deaths due to accidents or disease.

Unless the birth rate was very low, we would run out of resources or have sociological problems due to over crowding. Note that overcrowding tends to cause various problems.

With a very low birth rate, lack of genetic variety might have adverse consequences.

Apparently cartilage never stops growing, so immortal people would die from having oversized ears and noses.

Like some Jewish folks we all know? Barbara Streisand, anyone? Sarah Jessica Parker?

    Oh, wait! Judd Hirsch!

I wonder what Ben Shapiro will look like in thirty years...

Human beings have been effectively immortal "except for accidental death or disease" for most of the history of the species.

the next big thing for a multi billion dollar industry is nose & ear Replacements to their original size making people look 20 or 30 years younger.

correct me if i am wrong but the majority of humans die of disease or accident rather than "natural causes".
soo... this means you need to re-jig all your math

death rate does not change re-productive rate as the years are added to the end of life not the beginning.
    false negative
we are due to run out of resources
you need to re-jig your data and question perameters
like slums mass shootings domestic violence poverty ?
all things the USA already has more than it can cope with(the usa system is failing, it cant afford to pay for its own crime & poverty rate and cant afford to pay for its developing technalogical needs for utilities)
    question premis becomes invalid
irrelivent based on most likely form of extinction being cause and effect of things humans refuse to adapt to, thus it would be defined as a species endemic process
this makes over population statistically the most unlikely of all forms of extinction via any means(low birth rate).
This is already an ecconomic reality
we are seeing the massive number of people moving into the retirement age bracket where governments have completely failed and stolen trillions of dollars so there is not enough money to pay for their growing needs.
though voters have been some-what complicit(like the usa gun debate Vs the 2nd amendment false arguement paradigm).

as knowledge increases and health increases we are seeing an aging of breeders.
this is not a negative effect. on the whole it is a possitive effect, however, the manipulation of this has a heavy leaning on negative outcome by neferious means to exploit the differential gap of profit.

probably should be a completely seperate thread as the subject is soo big.
DNA mutating contaminents in the breeding population is just one massive example.
genetic variety in breeding is not soo much an issue for the human species because on the whole most locally matched DNA breeding is not done via DNA match, just topical cultural boundaries.
the death rate of poor genetic breeding is easily sustainable and provides a useful dynamic to medical advancement so it probably leverages both ends of the spectrum.

    p.s
some cultural issues have arrisen that are being deliberately avoided by many governments.
in china & india because of the dominant feature of manual labour need for the baby to be able to produce a profit, males have been chosen by the cultures.
this has resulted in MASSIVE infanticide of female babys(in the millions) and has resulted in a massive disproportionate number of males who do not have female breeding partners.

this creates a massive social problem.

onflow is the die-off of these low cost workers whos hourly rate income can be leveraged down as a form of supply and demand.
the sudden loss of these low cost workers may by simple accident coincide with tehcnalogical advancement resulting in a balance of robotics taking up the gap in cost.
    HOWEVER !
not if the current system of ecconomics remains.
you cant lose all that income into the bottom end of the society and thenpretend its all ging to remain the same.
you need to funnel large parts of the increased profit back into the bottom end to prevent the ecconomy from collapsing into a barbarian like capitalist cowboy & western system.

this over supply of cheap male workers who do not force up the wage rate to pay for females & breeding, are giving their profit to the corporates.
this profit if wasted on the top end will create a collapse in the system further down the track.
i suspect china has been planning for this for a little while.
    india i dont think so
    the usa, absolutely not.
indonesia & the philipines is probably the next big population centres that need to address the male to female income disparity balance to consumer income ratio.
chasing head long after a completely capitalist model that does not re-direct accompanying profit increases into the bottom end of the market is making the market top heavy, unable to turn or change direction and unstable.
like a double decker buss that puts all its passengers on the top floor.
it is just a matter of time before it falls over and its speed and ability to turn is reduced as time goes on.

thus... civil war moving to global war would be a vastly more likely cause of extinction way before under population
